An account by John R. Guardiano, a former Marine who not only met but con-versed in depth with Mattis, sums up the general’s character best.

Both the left and the right are wrong about Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James N. Mattis. He is neither the Jack Nicholson caricature of a Marine de-picted in the 1992 movie A Few Good Men nor the callous and mad eccentric depicted by George C. Scott in the 1970 movie Patton.

And Gen. Mattis didn’t just talk the talk; he walked the walk. He led from the front. Indeed, on at least one occasion that I know of, the General was bloodied from a firefight or improvised explosive device while out on patrol with junior, enlisted Marines one-third his age. That’s what makes Gen. Mattis such a great warrior: He truly re-spects and cares for his Marines.

“Guardiano,” he told me, “I don’t give a damn about the officers. If they don’t like what they’re doing, they can get on a plane and leave the Corps — go back where they came from. But I do care deeply about those 18- and 19-year-old Lance Corporals out on the frontlines.”

“You cannotallow any of your people to avoid the brutal facts. If they start living in a dream world, it’s going to be bad.”

Mattis has often talked to Marine leaders

about staying sharp.

The “dream world” he alludes

to is a reference to a complacent

attitude -- one that can cost lives if

troops aren’t vigi-lant.

“If in order to kill the enemy you have to kill an innocent, don’t take the shot. Don’t create more enemies than you take out by some immoral act.”

As a co-author of the military’s counter-insurgency manual (with David Petraeus), Mattis has often spoke about following the rules of engagement and being disciplined

among a ruthless enemy.

“I don’t lose any sleep at night over the poten-tial for failure. I cannot even spell the word.”

The General is confident in his abilities and that of his Marines -- he led the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade into Af-

ghanistan in 2001, the 1st Marine Division into Iraq in 2003, and led an operation into

Fallujah in 2004 dubbed “Operation Vigi-lant Resolve”, and helped to plan the later

“Operation Phantom Fury.”

“You are part of the world’s most feared and trusted force. Engage your brain be-fore you engage your weapon.”This line from his 2003 letter to his Marines foreshadows his contribution in 2006 to counter-insurgency doctrine, which stresses battlefield discipline, and protection of the civilian populace.

“Marines don’t know how to spell the word defeat”

As a highly-educated four-star General, Mattis probably can spell it, but he wants

his Marines to know that they should never let it happen.

“You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually it’s quite fun to fight them, you know. It’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right up there with you. I like brawling.”

Some Mattis quotes don’t come with-out a degree of controversy, including

this one. Said while speaking about his time on the ground in Afghanistan, he

was later counseled by his boss Gen. Ha-gee, who said “he should have chosen his

words more carefully.”

“Treachery has existed as long as there’s been war-fare, and there’s always been a few people that you couldn’t trust.”

In places such as Iraq and Afghanistan, alliances can often shift quickly. Mattis spoke

to Congress on this point after a series of green-on-blue attacks that left military lead-

ers struggling to deal with.

$650“The most important six inches on the battlefield isbetween your ears.”

He often emphasizes to his troops that they need to be problem solvers, only using

firepower as a last result.

“There are some people who think you have to hate them in order to shoot them. I don’t think you do. It’s just business.”

Many Marines look up to Mattis as a cult-like figure. Nevertheless, he will most likely be remembered as a consummate pro-fessional. A Marine officer we spoke with said, “the more I learned about him, the more I saw that the things we were doing right seemed to be associated with his phi-losophy of command.”

“A country that armed Stalin to defeat Hitler cancertainly work alongside enemies of al-Qaida todefeat al-Qaida.”The General is a student of history and avid reader. He often stresses the importance of education and training on building effective future leaders.

“The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event. That said, there are some *******s in the world that just need to be shot. There are hunters and there are victims. By your discipline, you will decide if you are a hunter or a victim.”

Speaking to his Marines at al Asad, he tried to motivate them to stay sharp and

continue the mission. He ended the speech, telling them in Patton-esque fashion, “I feel sorry for every son of a b---- that doesn’t get

to serve with you.”

“We’ve backed off in good faith to try and give you a chance to straighten this problem out. But I am going to beg with you for a minute. I’m going to plead with you, do not cross us. Because if you do, the survivors will write about what we do here for 10,000 years.”

Mattis demonstrates that he is willing to extend an olive branch to those on the fence

-- but always carries the weight of Marine firepower if that doesn’t work out.

“I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’mpleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f* with me, I’ll kill you all.”

After the initial Iraq invasion, “Chaos” (his radio callsign) sent home his tanks and artillery and used the “carrot and the stick”

with Iraqi tribal leaders.

“PowerPoint makes us stupid.”As a top General, we can safely assume that Mattis has had to sit through his fair share

of awful PowerPoint briefings.

Torture admission would help restore U.S. standing in worldBy Azizah Y. al-Hibri

I was a child in Beirut, Lebanon, when my American teacher told me the story of George Washington and the cherry tree. She also told me about Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves. I never forgot these stories and felt immediately that I had kindred spir-its across the ocean. Many years later, I became a United States citizen and held my head high as an American. I believed in this country’s constitution-al and ethical values -- and most of all, in its justice.

Then 9/11 happened and our world changed forever. I was supposed to meet with President Bush at the White House that afternoon; instead we met a few days later at the Islamic Center of Washington when he spoke to the na-tion in support of American Muslims. At the time, we Muslims weren’t as concerned about the blowback as we were about U.S. security and the vic-tims of 9/11.

And then came the aftershock: wars

American apology for Guantanamo?(This letter was emailed to the Military Press with the following note: “Please consider the article on torture below for publication. It’s by University of Richmond Law

School Professor and prominent human rights activist Azizah Y. al-Hibri.In her piece, Azizah offers an expert firsthand perspective on how American Muslims perceive America’s recent history of torture. She goes on to argue that America cannot

regain the respect of the Muslim world until it acknowledges its torturous past -- and closes the most notorious symbol of that past, the prison at Guantanamo Bay. Azizah immigrated to the United States from the Middle East -- so she brings unique insight to this issue.”

in Afghanistan and Iraq, more blood-shed, and foreign detainees. The prison at Guantanamo Bay opened. Stories about incredible acts of torture while interrogating detainees trickled in. Initially, American Muslims refused to believe. Not this country, not our presi-

dent. But facts are stubborn, and we had to yield to them.

It didn’t have to be this way. Tor-ture is illegal and immoral, and there is no persuasive evidence that its use against suspected terrorists produced actionable intelligence or helped save lives. The conventional interrogation techniques the United States has used throughout its history are effective. There was no justification for abandon-ing them -- no matter how heinous the crimes committed on 9/11. That deci-sion cost this country dearly.

The United States can regain its moral stature in the global Muslim community -- but will never do so if it refuses to confront the abuses of the past. Like its first president, George Washington, America needs to readily admit the truth -- as painful as it may be.

More than ten years after 9/11, the claim that this information must re-main classified to protect national se-curity is unfounded. President Obama must direct executive branch agencies to declassify evidence of abusive prac-tices — with redactions only where needed to protect specific individuals or honor diplomatic agreements.

The best place to start would be with the information underlying the recently completed -- but still secret -- Senate Select Committee on Intelli-gence report on the CIA’s interrogation program. According to senators famil-

iar with it, the report — based on more than 6 million pages of classified docu-ments — debunks the myth that tor-ture saved lives. Allowing the public to see and evaluate all the facts for itself is the first step toward ensuring that we will never again commit torture in the name of freedom.

But simply declassifying informa-tion is not sufficient to restoring Amer-ica’s image in the Muslim community. The notorious Guantanamo prison — a symbol of U.S. torture and abuse post 9/11 — must also close. One hundred sixty-six detainees remain at Guanta-namo, even though the U.S. government has already cleared 86 for transfer. The seemingly indefinite detention of these individuals under deteriorating condi-tions led to a massive hunger strike; at one point, more than 40 detainees were being force-fed through a painful and degrading procedure that violates es-tablished principles of medical ethics. In recent years, nearly as many detain-ees have died in custody as have been released-a trend that could worsen if the hunger strike continues.

During his counterterrorism speech in May, President Obama asked us to “[i]magine a future — 10 years from now or 20 years from now — when the United States of America is still hold-ing people who have been charged with no crime on a piece of land that is not part of our country... Is that some-thing our Founders foresaw? Is that the America we want to leave our chil-dren?” The answer to both questions is a resounding “no.” If the president wants to avoid that future, he must act. He has the authority to immediately begin transferring prisoners out of Guantanamo, and he must use it.

Taking these steps will go a long way toward repairing the damage done after 9/11 and restoring respect and admiration for our country in the Muslim world. If America rededicates itself to its traditional values, the val-ues I learned as a little girl in Beirut, its light can shine brightly once again.

Publisher’srebuttal on American apologyHey professor, do you remember...?

ghanistan... Against Muslim males.15. In 2002, reporter Daniel Pearl

was kidnapped and beheaded by---You guessed it--- Muslim males.

16. In 2012, U.S. Consulate in Beng-hazi... Muslim males.

17. In 2013, Boston marathon bomb-ers.. Muslim males.

I think the professor is out of her blanking mind! Her American citizen-ship should be taken away from her if she thinks the American people owe her or any other Muslim an apology for any punishment handed out to the criminal spies that participated in the 9/11 trag-edies. War (though undeclared) was initiated by radical Muslims in the 9/11 attacks. In the time of war, all spies can be executed according to the Geneva Convention. The information garnered in the prison at Guantanamo is still classified and we do not yet know the value of the evidence obtained. But if it

spared one Ameri-can citizen’s life or the ag-ony and grief it creates for fam-ily, then Guan-tanamo was worth it!

No, I really don’t see a

reason here to justify an apology? Are these 17 incidents merely coincidence? So, to ensure that Americans never of-fend anyone, particularly fanatics in-tent on killing us, what type of an apol-ogy would you like us to make?

Do you think the American people have completely lost their minds, or just their power of reason?

And by the way…. May 13, 1981: LET’S NOT FORGET THAT JOHN PAUL II WAS SHOT BY Mehmet Ali Agca in an attempt to kill the head of the Roman Catholic Church.... by a Muslim male.

So to you, professor… get your facts straight before you send your informa-tion out to be published. In closing, I ask, “Do we really want young Ameri-cans to be subjected to this type of learning from a professional?”

Did you ever get ‘into’ singing a song with friends?

You know, you’re driving along on a road trip, a great song comes on, and you and your friends spontane-ously belt it out. Then, as the song winds down, you joke, laugh, or talk. Somehow it seems like you’re better friends after sing-ing together.

You know what’s amazing about singing compared to talk-ing? When you and your spouse talk, you can’t do it at the same time or you’ll interrupt each other.

But singing is just the opposite. When two people sing, the whole point is to do it together. The idea is to be in sync with each other.

Talking at the same time creates conflict. Singing at the same time cre-ates harmony.

Ever been a rock concert? The band plays the first few notes of its most popular song, everyone screams, flicks their lighter, and starts singing along. It feels like you’re best friends with 30,000 people, doesn’t it?

Something special happens when people sing together. When two people join their voices; it unites their hearts.

Well, by now you can guess this

Being silly = happyweek’s assignment. It may seem a bit silly, but silly is good for your marriage. So here’s what I want you to do.

Pick a song to sing together. Pick one you really like and can get into. If you have it on CD, then play it while you sing along together. If not, go on-

line, print out the lyrics of a song, and do a home performance. If you’re really bold, invite your kids to listen. If you’re not feeling bold at all, have a drink first.

I know you’re thinking you’ll pass on this one. Too awkward, right? Don’t do it. Don’t skip this one.

You’re right, it’ll be weird at first, but I PROMISE YOU you’ll get past that and you’ll have fun with it. Like it said, silly is good for your marriage. lisa, be silly for 3 minutes. Sing a song with your spouse. For more info, get the free report 7 Secrets for Fixing Your Marriage at www.MarriageFitness.com.

Ashworth College (www.ashworth-college.edu), a leading accredited online school, announced that Cerise Lake, Ashworth College Human Re-source Manager, has been recognized by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (EGSR) and the Office of the Secretary of Defense for contribut-ing to “national security and protect-ing liberty and freedom by supporting employee participation in America’s National Guard and Reserve Force”.

EGSR was established with the in-tention of assisting civilian employers to address and alleviate conflict that may arise due to the employee’s mili-tary obligations.

Many military servicemen and women, as well as their spouses, choose to earn online college degrees due in large part to the flexibility of having their studies available to them no mat-ter where they are stationed. Online study also coincides with their often changing schedules.

Rob Klapper, President of Ashworth College, expressed gratitude for Lake’s years of dedication to the mission and values of the school. He also said, "We’re proud of our ability to provide affordable, accredited online programs to military personnel, military spouses and the veteran community. Cerise Lake embodies the Ashworth mission -- to ensure that our programs meet the needs of anyone wanting to continue their education, particularly those with military affiliations.”

Columbia College celebrated 40 years educating adults at its St. Louis campus, which recently saw a major renovation. The ribbon-cutting event rededicated the renovated campus on Woodson Road. Established in 1973, the St. Louis campus was Columbia College’s first Nationwide Campus lo-cation, and is one of 35 Adult Higher Education campuses across the coun-try.

“This is a great day for the college,” said Dr. Terry Smith, interim president of Columbia College. “Serving adult learners is woven into the fabric of our institution, and our mission is to pro-vide students with a one-of-a-kind lib-eral arts education as the foundation for their careers and personal lives.”

Columbia College’s Adult Higher Education program began as response to requests from Army recruiters in the St. Louis area for flexible education op-portunities, and, in 1973, the college established the Extended Studies Di-vision. Today, the program serves more than 31,000 students annually and has been recognized as a leader in adult education.

This is the first in a series where we informally sit down and speak with the commanding officer of vari-ous military units. Simply called the C.O., he/she is responsible for ev-erything, and I do mean everything that happens within their command. They are tasked with responsibilities from making sure the unit can com-plete what every mission handed to them to handling personnel training and issues that might crop up.

I am honored to introduce Lt. Colonel Chris “Cliff” Henger (pro-nounce as Hanger) to you. He is the new commanding officer of Marine Fighter Training Squadron VM-FAT-101, known as the “Sharpshoot-ers.” The Sharpshooters are based at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar. Henger took command of VMFAT-101, The Sharpshooters, just a few short months ago.

This squadron is responsible for the training of new Marine and Navy F/A-18 Hornet pilots after they finish their initial flight training at Pensacola, Florida, and advanced training at Naval Air Station Corpus Christy, Texas.

Lt. Col Henger graduated from University of New Mexico in May of 1991 where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. While he had a good paying job, working in restaurant management, he knew that it wasn’t what he wanted to do with his life, and knew it was not to be his future. He was commis-sioned a second lieutenant via the Officer Candidate’s Course in April 1993. While originally planning to have a career on land, the Marine Corps had a different path for him to follow. After graduating The Basic School in October 1992, he reported to NAS Pensacola, Florida for flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in February 1996.

Gay Marriage ‘Leave’ May Get a New Name

With Republicans raising legal issues and “unfair” echoing across military communities, Defense of-ficials are reviewing a two-week old policy to allow up to 10 days of special “marriage leave” for gay and lesbian members assigned more than 100 miles from a state where they can marry legally. Instead of unearned leave, which might need to be backed by statute, commands might be encouraged to grant up to 10 days’ “administrative absence.” The intent still would be to give homosexual service members extra time off to travel to where same-sex marriage is allowed, and thus qualify them sooner for full benefits including spousal medical care and “with dependents” housing allow-ances, military and congressional sources confirm. It’s time to seize control of America’s energy futureBy Chris Faulkner, CEO of Breitling Energy Companies.

Don’t expect oil prices to fall any time soon. Although domes-tic oil production is expanding rapidly, oil is once again over $100 per barrel, largely due to political unrest in the Middle East.

The mere threat of a disrup-tion in oil shipments is enough to increase prices. Just imag-ine what a full-on blockade in, say, the Suez Canal or the Su-ez-Mediterranean Pipeline would do to the U.S. energy market. With the Syrian conflict spilling over into neighboring countries, and Organization of the Petro-leum Exporting Countries (OPEC) members aligning on different sides in the struggle, the situation is ripe for a surge in prices. If Israel and Iran heat up, we could see oil prices soaring to $150.

America is not yet energy independent. But despite the recent spike in oil prices, our long-term energy out-look is bright. The ongoing domestic oil boom has given us the means and opportu-

nity to break free from the tyranny of oil imports from hostile nations — but only if the United States does all it can to increase and encourage domestic energy production.

The price of West Texas Interme-diate (WTI) crude — the benchmark for domestic oil prices — has been increasing. That’s good news for the futures market, and suggests the WTI is back as the world’s leading oil benchmark.

And that’s just the start of America’s sunny energy outlook. The U.S. government recently doubled its estimates of recover-able energy in North Dakota’s Bakken and Three Forks shale formations, to 7.4 billion barrels of oil and 6.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. And, according to the IEA, America is on track to surpass Saudi Arabia in oil output by 2017.

At the same time, OPEC is steadily losing relevance. OPEC — a cartel includ-ing several member nations with alarming amounts of Islamist violence — recently announced it expects de-mand for its oil to drop by 300,000 barrels a day next year, and projections for future demand for OPEC oil are flattening even as OPEC members compete

more fiercely with each other for mar-ket share.

For far too long, America’s economy has been at the mercy of the political-ly unstable and anti-American Middle East. Now, the tides are shifting. Oil production from non-OPEC countries is expected to rise next year by 1.2 million barrels a day. And most of that new production is coming from the United States and Canada.

What’s more, Saudi Arabia’s and other oil infrastructure in the Middle East has been increasingly under at-tack by terrorists who are seeking to disrupt global markets by blocking oil production and transportation. Vast networks of pipelines are unprotect-ed and vulnerable, and the terrorists know it.

However, our lawmakers can’t af-ford to take the trend toward true energy independence for granted. The only real threat to Ameri-can energy security is, well, America. Politics could com-promise this country’s en-ergy boom.

Take the regulatory restrictions on hydraulic fracturing, popularly known as “fracking.” The recent oil and gas boom is the result of advances in this tech-nology, in tandem with advances in horizontal

drilling. In fracking, a solution that is 99.5 percent sand and water, plus a few trace chemicals, is pumped under-ground at high pressure to break up rock formations.

Despite the fact that over a million wells have been fracked in America with an unparalleled safety record, radical environmentalists have been trying to sway public opinion against fracking. They’re deploying easily de-bunked propaganda. There’s simply no real evidence that fracking pollutes groundwater, causes earthquakes or is responsible for any of the other outra-geous claims being made against the practice.

The pros and cons of frackingBy Michael Turek

Energy policy is almost always controversial, and relatively new tech-nology is often at the forefront of arguments. In most cases, a particular development may not be overwhelmingly positive or negative, and deci-sions must be based on nuance and by comparing new developments to old methods of generating energy. In recent years, fracking has been a source of considerable controversy; here are some of the pros and cons of fracking and how it is affecting the energy industry.

What is fracking?Energy providers in Texas and elsewhere have been proponents of natu-

ral gas for decades. Natural gas is abundant in the United States, but ex-ploiting it has always been difficult. Thanks to fracking technology, it is now possible to drill both vertically and horizontally to tap into natural gas reserves that were previously inaccessible. Fracking has revolutionized en-ergy production in the United States and elsewhere in the world, and most experts view natural gas as perhaps the most important fuel for the future.

What are its advantages? Thanks to fracking, generating electricity with natural gas is now ap-

proximately the same cost of generating electricity with coal. Because of this, the United States now has a much more diverse energy portfolio. In addition, natural gas releases two to three times less carbon into the atmo-sphere than coal, and it releases far less particulate matter as well. While green energy advocates prefer technology that releases little to no carbon dioxide, the improvements provided by natural gas can slow the progres-sion of global warming and allow the United States to meet energy goals. Natural gas plants are also relatively cheap to build, and they can be scaled easily to meet energy demands. Because of this, natural gas is expected to be the baseline energy source of choice for the foreseeable future.

What are its disadvantages? Most of the controversy surrounding natural gas has to do with frack-

ing. Studies have shown that fracking does cause small earthquakes, which can damage homes. However, it should be noted that these earthquakes are relatively small, and some experts believe that these small earthquakes relieve pressure that could have caused larger earthquakes in the future. Fracking also uses a tremendous amount of water that contains chemicals and other environmentally damaging materials. Runoff from fracking op-erations can cause tremendous environmental harm, and some regulators believe that current regulations are not strict enough to prevent this harm. Finally, fracking brings up a number of land rights issues. Since fracking involves horizontal drilling, disputes often arise over whether a fracking company has access to certain segments of land underground.

While fracking will remain controversial, it is difficult to imagine a fu-ture where fracking is not an important component of energy generation. Although it is not a perfect technology, natural gas will likely allow the United States and other nations to reduce their carbon outputs consider-ably while maintaining their energy generation and avoiding the costs as-sociated with solar power. Those interested in energy generation should en-sure that they are abreast of the latest developments in fracking technology.

In the military we are constantly performing tests and inspections. Pre-paring for them can be a long and la-bor-intensive process. But during prep-aration for these inspections, areas in need of improvement are often identi-fied. The need to review and improve processes cannot be underestimated.

In the Navy we hold regular in-spections to test the integrity of our ships, aircraft, and submarines and the prepared-ness of our Sail-ors. There are also reviews such as Personnel Inspections in which the condition of our Sailors’ uniforms and their grooming standards are assessed. Then there are Zone Inspections in which we check the cleanliness and safety of our command work spaces. I personally go one step further and conduct Departmental Personnel and Zone Inspections every month, because the military bearing of your personnel and the professionalism of your work spaces reflect directly on your leader-ship. The motto I live by is “Don’t get ready, stay ready

In the military, it is imperative to check the integrity of programs and identify weaknesses early on because we have the awesome responsibility of protecting our country. Many of us

Expect what you inspectalso apply these same principles in our daily lives. Reviewing your child’s re-port card, balancing your checkbook and getting routine maintenance done on your vehicle are simple processes that, if neglected, could have dire con-sequences. So the bottom line is, if you INSPECT nothing, EXPECT anything.

What’s your home’s price tag now? This content is providedcourtesy of USAA.

As the housing market appears to be bouncing back in many parts of the country, you may be wondering: What’s my residence worth now?

There’s actually more than one an-swer, according to Scott Halliwell, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner at USAA. He says your home has three, potentially very differ-ent, price tags based on its:

• Market value• Replacement value• Property tax value“Since different values can be used

for different reasons, it’s important to understand when each applies,” Hal-liwell explains, adding that some of these values may move in different di-rections at the same time.

Here’s a description of the values and why you should understand each one.

Market ValueWhat Is It?Market value is the dollar amount

that homes in your area are bought and sold for. It’s the measure most homeowners think of when they try to estimate their home’s worth or value. Determined in part by the going rate for similar houses in your city and neighborhood, and even on your street, market value is not based on what you paid for the home or how much it cost you to finish out the basement, re-roof or remodel the kitchen. Many intan-gibles, such as curb appeal, location, amenities and condition, factor into this figure.

Why It’s ImportantUnderstanding the market value

helps you calculate your total net worth as well as how much eq-uity you have in your home. To calculate the equity you have in your home, simply subtract the amount you owe on your home from its market value: That’s your equity, or about how much profit you could receive from a sale. That’s money you could use in a variety of ways:

• To buy a bigger house.

• To trade equity for cash in case of an emer-gency.

• To pad your savings account

if you downsize to a smaller home.

• To pay down debt, if you choose to rent and free your-

self from a mortgage. To strengthen your negotiating

position with potential buyers, get an accurate idea of your home’s market value. A real estate agent can tell you the selling prices of similar homes in your area, helping you set reasonable expectations.

“If your area is in a buyer’s mar-ket, your home’s market value may be lower than you’d like. You might not have as much leverage against a buyer who wants to negotiate, so you need to know where you’re starting,” Halliwell explains.

A real estate agent who walks through the property, inside and out, can provide an estimate of your home’s market value and offer advice on mak-ing your home more attractive to pro-spective buyers.

Even if you’re planning to stay in your home, market value matters when taking out a home equity line of credit or home equity loan. For example, you may be planning a major kitchen redo and need $40,000, or you want to tap your equity to help pay your kids’ col-lege tuition. Depending on your cred-itworthiness, many lenders will allow you to borrow up to 85% of your home’s value, less any mortgage or other equi-ty loan on that property. Also, a lender may order an appraisal to determine the market value of your home.

Replacement ValueWhat Is It?If your home is completely de-

stroyed because of, say, a fire or natu-ral disaster, replacement cost is the amount it would cost to remove all de-bris and rebuild the entire structure from the ground up based on current construction costs in your area.

Granted, very few claims are total losses, says Cedric Matterson, a senior staff underwriter with USAA. But if you’re a victim of a fire that consumes your whole house, or your home is in the path of a vicious storm, you’ll be re-lieved to have a homeowners insurance policy that covers the entire financial burden of rebuilding.

“Our philosophy, which is backed by years of experience, is that homes should be insured for 100% of the min-imum estimated replacement cost,” Matterson says.

Jon Bunte started smoking when he turned 18, a habit picked up from a friend that appeared to ease his chron-ic headaches.

He continued to smoke when he joined the Air Force, but about midway through his first enlistment, searching for a less dirty way to satisfy his nico-tine cravings, he tried an electronic cigarette, or e-cig. Even though experi-ence was wholly unsatisfying, sending him scrambling for a pack of Marlboro Menthol Lights, he tried again this past March, for the same reason.

And according to Bunte, he hasn’t smoked a tobacco cigarette since.

“Smoking was affecting my health. It made running difficult, and wak-ing up coughing up phlegm is no way to start a day. … Vaping gives you all

Military hasn’t sorted out rules on ‘vaping’

of the effects of smoking without the nasty bad ones,” Bunte says.

Once a curiosity at mall kiosks, e-cigs are popping up on tobacco shelves, in smoke shops and at military ex-changes, which began carrying the bat-tery-powered devices within the past

two months. Since May, sales of e-cigs in the Army and Air Force exchanges alone topped 28,600.

Celebrities such as Leonardo Di-Caprio and Lindsay Lohan have been spotted vaporizing, or “vaping,” in Los Angeles, and major tobacco companies

like R.J. Reynolds and Lorillard have waded into the market.

But as e-cigs grow in popularity, government regulators and the mili-tary services are sorting out what rules should apply to these accessories, which turn a nicotine-infused liquid like propylene glycol or vegetable glyc-erine into an inhalable vapor.

The Food and Drug Administration has yet to impose rules on e-cigs but has said it likely will add them to the list of tobacco products regulated by the agency sometime this year.

The military services already treat them as if they are tobacco products, restricting their use to designated smoking areas.

Among the concerns the FDA has about the gadgets are long-term health consequences, quality-control issues and marketing, especially questions over whether children and teens may be drawn to them. The e-cigs are avail-able not only in tobacco and menthol flavors but in popcorn, chocolate, cara-mel machiatto and one of Bunte’s fa-vorites, strawberry vanilla cupcake.

Vapers and manufacturers say they are much safer than cigarettes, but no studies have been done on their long-term health effects, mainly because they’re relatively new to the market.

A German study published in late June found that some liquids used in e-cig cartridges contain volatile organic compounds, acetone, formaldehyde and other chemicals. The German Can-cer Research Center in Heidelberg also found that they produce secondhand vapors that may affect nonusers.

Still, users say they feel better after having switched from traditional ciga-rettes to electronic ones.

Bunte, for example, says his teeth are cleaner, he sleeps more soundly and no longer wheezes or coughs dur-ing exercise.

“They aren’t branded as a [smok-ing cessation tool], but I feel they are a great tool for it,” Bunte says.

In the coming months, consumers will have more choices for vaping as the large tobacco companies jump into the e-cig market. Altria, maker of Marl-boro, will launch MarkTen this summer in Indiana in preparation for a national rollout.

Lorillard, which manufactures New-port and Kent cigarettes, purchased Blu Ecigs in 2012 and has been expand-ing its availability at retail stores.

And this month, R.J. Reynolds, mak-er of Winston and Pall Mall cigarettes, will introduce its Vuse e-cigarette in Colorado, also eyeing a national expan-sion.

Company believe their U.S.-made e-cig will be an industry game-changer, offering such a consistent experience that smokers who try one will continue using it.

“In studying the market, there is high trial of electronic cigarettes but low adoption. There have been qual-ity-control issues. These are things we wanted to address,” says Richard Smith, communications manager for Reynolds American.

Bunte says smokers often don’t stick with e-cigs because they try inexpen-

During last January’s event, I visited a couple of Cohn Restau-rant Group (www.cohnrestaurants.com) participants. Escondido’s new-est hot spot, Vintana, was my choice for lunch ($20). Located in the pent-house floor of a Lexus dealership, it has a so-phisticated feel and features perfectly prepared and pre-sented modern California cuisine. Its first rate service adds up to another win-ner for Chef Deborah Scott.

Dinner at 100 Wines ($30), featur-ing “bistro comfort” Mediterranean fusion food, was a treat. Located in Hillcrest, there’s an uptown vibe and busy happy hour. Imagine a mobster that comprised the cunning of Lucky Luciano, the bril-liance of Meyer Lansky, the ferocity of Vito Genovese, the duplicity of Car-mine Galante and the massive wealth of Pablo Escobar. Such a person is not the fantasy creation of some novel-ist or screenwriter, but rather a real-life flesh-and-blood monster that lives among us.

Semion Mogilevich looks nothing like Marlon Brando nor Al Pacino. The short, bald, pockmarked, gross-ly obese, 66-year-old Ukrainian is believed by international law enforcement agencies to be one of the most power-

Meet the world’s most powerful mobster

laundering.Indicted in 2003, Mogilevich is cur-

rently one of the FBI’s ten most wanted fugitives, wanted for wire fraud, RICO conspiracy, mail fraud, money launder-ing, securities fraud, among other of-fenses.

With a $100,000 bounty on his head, Mogilevich is also suspected of involve-ment in murder-for-hire, arms deal-ing and drug trafficking. The FBI not-

ed that he holds a degree in economics (quite unlike most mobsters) and smokes heavily (quite common for Rus-sians and Ukrainians).

He was arrested in Moscow in 2008 for tax evasion, but released the follow-ing year. Russia subsequently rejected a request by U.S. authorities to extra-dite Mogilevich to answer charges re-

lated to the aforementioned mas-sive stock swindle.

A website called Gang-stersinc. reported that

Semion Mogilevich’s criminal career be-

gan slowly and with little initial suc-

cess. As a young man in the ear-ly 1970s, he be-longed to the Lyubertskaya

ful criminals on earth. The Moscow resident reportedly

holds Russian, Ukrainian, Greek and Israeli passports.

Among a litany of crimes, Mogile-vich allegedly defrauded thousands of investors in the US and Canada in the 1990s, netting him at least $150 million. He also served as the chief of Inkombank, a Russian financial insti-tution, which was accused of money

group, a band of small-time crooks in Moscow. He apparently served two sep-arate jail terms during this period for a plethora of petty crimes.

His fortunes improved dramatical-ly during the 1980s when the Russian government allowed thousands of Jews to depart for Israel, Europe and the U.S. Seeing a grand business opportu-nity, Mogilevich defrauded his fellow Jews by buying their possessions at discount prices (exploiting their ea-gerness to leave) and promising to sell them on the market and send the prof-its fron such nonexistent sales over-seas at a later date. Mogilevich scored millions of dollars on this scheme and used these funds to invest in the high-ly lucrative areas of weapons and drugs smuggling, prostitution and gambling.

In the wake of the collapse of the So-viet Union empire in the early 1990s, scores of organized crime gangs took advantage of the chaos, but Mogilevich fled to Israel.

However, he did not relinquish his criminal activities. Indeed, Mogilev-ich made contacts with other mobsters while still running various illegal en-terprises and investing his ill-gotten cash in myriad businesses. After mar-rying his Hungarian girlfriend Kata-lin Papp, Mogilevich relocated to Bu-dapest, where he formed a criminal empire based on the structural model of the Sicilian Mafia.

“What, this old thing...”A young girl gets married and a

few days later her mother goes to vis-it. When she knocks on the door, she is shocked to see her daughter open it na-ked. “What are you doing?” she asks. “Mom, it’s my LOVE dress!! Don’t you like it?”

“I’ll come back in a few weeks when the honeymoon is over,” replies the mom. When she goes back, she is shocked when once again her daughter is naked. “Now what are you doing?”

“Mom, it’s my LOVE dress. It keeps the marriage spicy!” Later that night the mom decides to try it for herself. When her husband comes home, he gives the same reaction: “Honey, what are you doing?” She gave him the same answer her daughter gave her, “It’s my LOVE dress! What do you think of it?” Her husband thinks long and hard and says, “I think you should have ironed it!”

“Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door.

Maxima 3.5 SV, Nissan’s popular mid-size flagship with more than a bit of performance built in. Maxima is one of the best selling midsize cars in Amer-ica and has a faithful customer base. Granted, Infiniti is more luxurious, but those looking for a more discreet way of enjoying their good fortune are prime targets for Maxima pur-chase.

Only two Maxi-ma models are avail-able, name-ly “S” and “SV.” Both come powered by an iden-tical 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 290 stout horsepower and 161 lb. ft. of torque. Hooked to an Xtronic CVT with manual shift ability, Maxima de-livers surprisingly good performance with brisk acceleration, especially considering the “better for fuel mile-age than performance” CVT automat-ic that comes standard. Our tester ac-celerated to 60-mph in 6.4 seconds, which is quite impressive.

The base “S” starts at $31,000 and comes with lots of standard equip-ment. Included are 18-inch tires with nice alloys, power moonroof, keyless ignition, cruise, dual-zone air con-ditioning, dual power front seats, 60/40-split-folding rear seat and a

and Blue-tooth, too.

When you move up to the “SV,” which starts at $33,240, things get even better. Fog lamps and outside mirrors with turn indicators are

Only time and research will tell what the long-term health effects of vaping are, but the devices ap-pear to be here for the long haul. According to some estimates, the market could top $1 billion in sales in the coming years, and the social stigma of smoking appears to be influencing smokers to find alternatives.

CHARGERSREPORTBy Art Garcia Jr.

When the 2013 NFL Draft finally came to a close this past April, Kwame Geathers was ‘very’ disappointed and probably, I’m guessing, a little embar-rassed that his phone never rang. En-tering the draft following his junior year at the University of Georgia, Geathers was projected to be a third or fourth round selection. And with a family pedigree of Geathers in the NFL (father, uncle and two brothers), going undrafted probably never entered his mind. However, rather than feeling sorry for himself, Kwame decided to sign a contract with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent. MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. caught up with Geathers and talked about his draft experience and his thoughts on making the 53-man roster.

AG: How does it feel to make the team as an undrafted rookie free agent?

KG: It’s exciting, very exciting. I feel

blessed for this opportunity to be able to come down here and play football and I’m looking forward to doing that. Everything seems to be going pretty good so far, I just got to keep up the good work and keep striving for it and hopefully have a real good season.

AG: With a family pedigree of play-ing in the NFL, how hard was it on you when you went undrafted?

KG: I was very disappointed but that’s life and that’s how it goes. But I was blessed to come down here and play for the Chargers and that was the main thing – just to get another op-portunity to play football again some-where and this was the place to come and I’m happy I did.

AG: Being an undrafted free agent you could have tried out for any of the 32 teams in the NFL did you do some research on the Chargers knowing they needed help on the defensive line?

KG: No, not really research I just looked around at whoever called me

after the draft and looked at the teams, the area and how the ros-ters looked and I decided to come here to the Chargers.

AG: What were you doing on the day of the NFL draft?

KG: I was back at home, me and my broth-ers just hanging out watch- ing the draft and then went skeet shoot-ing afterwards and that’s about it.

AG: Take me back to the day of the draft. Did anyone tell you where you were pro-jected to be picked or did any team call you and say ‘get ready because if you’re there when our next pick comes up we’re taking you,’ and they picked someone else instead?

KG: Yeah I got a couple of calls from teams saying they were interested in me and they were going to draft me but it didn’t work out that way.

AG: Are any of those teams on the schedule this year because I assume it would give you extra incentive to go out there and show them what they passed up?

KG: I believe there are a couple of teams but I don’t really look at it

like that – but it will be good

to play extra hard (against those teams)

and give me more motiva-

tion.AG: Did you set

any goals for your rookie season?KG: I had a few goals but the main

goal was to come out here and compete and to give it my all everyday out on the field and give it great effort and at-titude.

AG: You have and had a few family members who played in the NFL, what is the best advice they gave you?

KG: The best advice they gave me after the draft was that it’s over with, keep your head up and now it’s time to go to work and compete for a job.

The EndzoneGeathers has two brothers – Rob-

ert Jr. (DE/Bengals) and Clifton (DE/Eagles) – who currently play in the NFL. Robert Jr. was a fourth-round pick of the Bengals in 2004 and Clifton was a sixth-round pick by the Browns in 2010. His father, Robert Sr. was a third-round pick of the Bills in the 1981 draft and his uncle, ‘Jumpy’ Geathers, was a second-round pick of the Saints in 1984. Advantage Chargers? With all the concern over the depth along the defensive line, defensive ends Corey Liuget and Kendall Reyes feel their ability to move inside and rotate at defensive tackle can give the defense an edge over opposing offensive lines throughout the game. “We feel real good, Kendall and I both work hard and are versatile in our defense as far as manning the end position in the 3-4 defense as well as going in to nose tackle in the three-technique or what-ever it is the coaches need us to do,” Liuget said. Geathers joins the likes of Antonio Gates, Kris Dielman, Stephen Cooper, Kassim Osgood, Malcom Floyd, Jacques Cesaire and Seyi Ajirotutu as a talented list of undrafted rookie free agents who have made the Chargers squad over the past decade.

Texas A&M quarterback John-ny Manziel is the talk of college foot-ball for both positive and negative rea-sons following his Week 1 performance against Rice. The defending Heisman Trophy win-ner has already rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, in-cluding former Chicago Bears linebacker and current Fox Football Dai-ly analyst Bri-an Urlacher, ac-cording to Ross Jones of FoxS-ports.com.

As seen in this video, the future Hall of Fame line-backer was com-plimentary of Manziel’s skills, but he clearly believes that some of his antics are unnecessary:

He’s such a good football player. You saw in the second half what he did, three touchdown passes and ran it pret-ty well. It’s just too bad he had to act like that. I’m pulling for the guy, I want him to do well.

Urlacher stopped short of calling Manziel a “punk” directly, but he be-lieves that Manziel came off looking like one on Saturday:

I’m not saying he’s a punk, but he acted like a punk in that game. Like his coach said, guys are going to come af-ter him all season long.

Things haven’t exactly gone smooth-ly for Manziel since he became the first freshman to win the Heisman last year, as his offseason was rife with scandals. One came in July when he left the Man-ning Passing Academy early after miss-ing several scheduled practices. While it was eventually written off as a case of Manziel being ill, rumors persist that “partying” could have played a role in his absence.

More significant was the investiga-tion surrounding Manziel potentially being paid for signing autographs. The NCAA was unable to find any hard ev-idence of that type of exchange occur-ring, so it reached a compromise with Texas A&M. Since the NCAA contend-ed that Manziel should have known his

autographs would allow oth-ers to profit, he was sus-pended for the first half against Rice.

Manziel took the field in the sec-ond half with the Ag-gies leading the Owls 28-21, and he didn’t waste any time mak-ing an impact. John-ny Football’s Heis-man form was on full display, as he threw for 94 yards, rushed for 19 more and threw three touchdowns as well.

However, some of the other things he did on the field over-shadowed his perfor-mance in the game, in-cluding a celebration in which he rubbed his hands together to signify money.

Manziel also seemed to reference the autograph scandal by making a signing motion in the direction of a

Rice defensive player. The worst offense came when ref-

erees flagged Manziel for unsports-manlike conduct for arguing with Rice players. It didn’t cost Texas A&M, as the game was well in hand, but head coach Kevin Sumlin certainly won’t ac-cept that type of behavior moving for-ward.

It’s difficult to argue with Urlach-er’s assessment of Manziel. There is no question that he is an incredible tal-ent, but he may have to turn down his bravado a bit if Texas A&M is going to reach its full potential this season.

Commentary by Paul MagnoSports.Yahoo.com

Hardcore boxing fans and followers of Floyd Mayweather are all too famil-iar with this:

Showtime’s All Access (or 24/7 back when Mayweather was with HBO) be-gins. The sun rises over the Mayweather Boxing Gym in Las Vegas. The narrator’s voice comes up, saying some-thing along the lines of “The work be-gins ear-ly at the Mayweath-er Boxing Gym in the champion’s adopted home town of Las Ve-gas.” Cut to an approach-ing Escalade (or some oth- er ridiculous-ly expensive car). Cue the hip-hop mu-sic. And then out comes Mayweather with his crew of bodyguards and ded-icated yes men.

Inside the gym, it’s always the same. Mayweather getting his hands wrapped by the aged and ever-loyal Ra-fael Garcia, Mayweather at the heavy bag, at the speed bag, and doing his trademark slap, block, and duck rou-tine with the mitts. “Hard Work, Ded-ication.”

Then, of course, is the obligatory

Will Floyd Mayweather’swretched excess getthe best of him?

COMMUNITY SERVICE ANOUNCEMENT

look at Mayweather’s conspicu-ous consumption and spoils of war (Yeah, Mayweather is rich!). For those unaware, Mayweather works hard, but also plays hard.

The opponent doesn’t even matter. Whether it’s Hatton showing his pale buttocks, Cotto swimming with his pals, or Cane- lo being gen-

erally stoic and whole-some, The Mayweather Show hasn’t changed much since the first pre-PPV publici-ty docu-menta-ries were made pri-or to the May-weather-

Oscar De la Hoya bout in 2007.

In the most recent All Access pro-gram on Showtime, boxing fans were treated to a look at Mayweather’s daz-zling Las Vegas car collection and his equally dazzling collection of lady “as-sistants.”

“We like the women stacked around here,” Mayweather interjected while one of his lady helpers was being inter-viewed for the cameras. “Stacked like a bank roll.”

It’s the kind of “impromptu” mo-ment one can expect from these shows---

Mayweath-er being Mayweath-er with dozens of bankrolled friends and asso-ciates letting him play emperor.

But the ques-tion when it comes to rich, famous prizefighters isn’t if they will one day lose their fortunes, but, rather, how long before it actual-ly happens.

From reading Tim Keown’s recent article on Mayweather for ESPN.com, it’s hard to imagine the five-division world champ holding on to his empire of excess for too many years after his fighting days are over.

In his article, Keown chronicles a twenty minute shopping spree of near-ly a quarter of a million dollars at a New York City jewelry store and a trip to a Grand Rapids Footlocker where Mayweather purchased his entourage and assorted friends and family com-plete basketball gear (shoes, socks, shorts, and shirts) for a pick-up bas-ketball game he felt like having later that day. In another instance, Keown writes of Mayweather taking two sepa-rate private jets on a trip--- one for him and his personal staff and one for his massive bodyguards, who Mayweather fears flying with because of their com-

bined weight.Sure, at the top of his game and

earning his place atop Forbes’ list of highest-paid athletes, he can afford this lifestyle. And he’ll be able to af-ford it for at least five more fights as he works through a mega-bucks six-fight deal with Showtime.

Mayweather, who showed his bank statement to Keown, has over $123 mil-lion in his personal bank account. Add another $41.5 million, guaranteed, for the Canelo bout this September 14, and it seems ridiculous that anyone would be talking about an in-the-red Mayweather.

But the tales of once-rich prizefight-ers are as old as the sport, itself. May-weather makes a lot, but he spends at an even greater pace. By media ac-counts, he also gambles frequently. This is all fine and easily manageable--- until Mayweather stops fighting. Then what?

At the end of the day, this is May-weather’s hard-earned money and he can do with it as he wishes.

But when the time comes and a 52-year-old Mayweather is languishing in the remnants of a once-glowing em-pire, it would be nice for the Showtime cameras to return for one final All Ac-cess:

The sun rises over a Vegas souve-nir shop that once used to be the May-weather Boxing Gym. The narrator’s voice comes up: “The work begins early at the former home of the Mayweather Boxing Gym. “ Cut to an approaching 2010 Ford Escort. Cue some ridiculous-ly outdated hip-hop music. And then out comes a terribly-aged Mayweath-er with a couple of chubby friends in faded The Money Team t-shirts and one female hanger-on, who is stacked less like a bank roll and more like a bundle of old newspapers.

“Mayweather is here for a contract-ed autograph signing,” says the deep-voiced narrator. “20 bucks for an auto-graph, 40 for a signature with a photo.”

“Hard work, Dedication,” May-weather mugs to the cameras as his famously brittle hands grasp a black sharpie and he begins to sign his name for the twelve middle-aged tourists in line…
