Midland Section ACS Scholarship Fund

Awardees /ApplicantsThis year we offered one $2,000 scholarships to Katarina Keel. Katarina Keel is an excellent student; went to Hemlock High, and is going to SVSU and majoring in

Chemistry. The Midland Section ACS scholarship funds are distributed through the Midland Area Community

Foundation, and Katarina will receive a $2,000 check from the Foundation the beginning of June, 2014.

completed• Taken on in 2012 as part of my chair goals• Template provided for contributors (Tina Leaym)• More than 17 sections updated and approved at

meetings• New sections written: resident agent, financial

committee, etc.

• New sections: WCC, Minority Affairs (just a start)—vote today?

Minority Affairs

The Committee on Minority Affairs is in a state of transition and is currently investigating potential initiatives for promoting the profession and providing resources to students and professionals in Mid Michigan, with great emphasis on areas with a significant underrepresented minority population. Transitional goals include:

• Identify a specific, target audience (e.g. students, teachers, young professionals, etc.) • Propose initiatives for specified audience• Establishing a budget for the following fiscal year

An annual report of the year’s activities will be prepared in December for submission to the Secretary, who will include it in the Section’s Annual Report to the SOCIETY.

WCC

Brief description of the goal of the Committee/Event/Office: A key objective of the Midland WCC group is networking, and fostering connections between organizations with a strong emphasis on

including students from our local universities. The intent of this group is to create a community with the specific mission of supporting women scientists in our community.

Basic Duties and responsibilities: There are three areas where this committee can provide a unique contribution: outreach, networking, and career development. Our

local section is very active in outreach activities to ignite a love for science in the next generation and this group has hte opportunity to supplement that with events that specifically target girls and highlight the roles of women in science. In regard to networking, the Midland Section is a unique place in that we have several chemical companies and universities within a relatively small community. WCC seeks to fill the need for more networking opportunities for women to build connections across organizations, specifically between university students and professionals to help initiate mentoring relationships for women. The third key area is career development. Each of the companies/universities has their own career development programs and this group will serve as a forum to share about topics that were well received within each organization and coordinate training sessions or seminars when the topic is broad enough to be of interest to women across our entire scientific community.

Example Timeline of Duties: This committee will coordinate and participate in many one-time events that do not result in a consistent annual timeline. The

steering committee will meet approximately once per month to discuss upcoming events and if the mission of the group is being met.
