Middle School Discipline Policy Please see HRA Handbook for “Academic and Behavior Intervention Policy”

Rules Follow all directions.

Bring necessary materials to class each day. Respect others and all property. Speak appropriately at all times.

Keep hands off others and property of others.

Rewards: At the end of each quarter, the students will be rewarded with a fun activity. This reward will be based on the following: passing grades, completing all assignments, and for not receiving any silent lunches or behavioral demerits. Consequences:

Verbal or written warning

Silent lunch or community service

Demerit Demerits Two silent lunches from one or two teachers for the same behavior in one day will result in a demerit. Chewing gum, repeated uniform violations after the first offense, or inappropriate behavior will earn a demerit from any teacher. Students and Parents sign the demerit slip, and the slip is returned to the homeroom teacher by the next school day. Students will receive an administrative demerit if the first one is not returned by the next school day. Cell Phone Guidelines (In HRA Handbook) Middle School students will be permitted to keep their cell phones in their backpacks. Cell phones must be off for the entire time the student is on campus, including ESCAPE. Cell phones are not to be out of the backpack for any reason while the student is on campus, including ESCAPE, unless given teacher permission. Students who choose to use their cell phone inappropriately during the day will receive a demerit and the cell phone will be confiscated. Parents may come and pick up the cell phone at the end of the day.

Bullying Policy

The following policy applies to all students as long as they are registered at Holy Rosary Academy. It includes, but is not limited to, the following actions: physical bullying (pushing, tripping, hitting, kicking, punching, stealing property), verbal bullying (name-calling, mocking, making fun of others, threats of physical harm, inappropriate notes or letters), relational bullying (social isolation and exclusion, spreading rumors), cyber-bullying (inappropriate text messages, emails, posts on websites, digital videos, or photos) via phone or computer, including through Facebook or Twitter, and sexual harassment. Typically what separates bullying from other behaviors is that it is: 1. Ongoing: Behavior exhibited by a student more than once. 2. Deliberate: Behavior witnessed by other students/adults as purposeful and not by accident. 3. Unequal: Behavior exhibited by someone who is NOT considered a friend.

*Please note that friendship struggles are equally important but require more open communication first rather than bullying steps. Bullying is NOT conflict.* If a student experiences bullying, he/she NEEDS to report it. Here are some options students have when reporting bullying: 1. Tell your teacher or the adult in charge immediately. 2. Drop a note in the Concerns Box (leave in the office for the counselor). Although this note

can be anonymous, it is most helpful to have detailed information about the students involved AND the bullying behaviors exhibited.

3. Ask to speak to the principal about it.

As always, parents should feel free to call or email the teacher or Dr. Reynolds regarding the situation. Please know that in order for us to help we need to know right away. Please encourage your child to talk about it with a teacher or Dr. Reynolds so immediate action can be taken. Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment is a bullying behavior that is harm of a sexual nature to someone’s self-esteem, feeling of safety, body, or property. It can by physical, verbal, and/or written. Sexual harassment is, but not limited to:

Sexual comments (written or verbal)

Leering

Gestures

Actions or comments based on a person’s sexual orientation

Sexual harassment verbal and teasing in nature

Displaying sexually explicit pictures or objects

Sexual harassment with intent to emotionally harm

Any type of physical harassment Discipline for sexual harassment cases will follow the Bullying Policy, beginning with Step 1-Demerit. Should an extreme case arise, consequences may be different. Steps of Accountability for Grades 6-8: see the HRA Student Handbook.

Homework Guidelines

When you are absent Please do not call the school or email a teacher for assignments for one day of

absence. If your child is absent, he/she needs to see his/her teachers for missed work upon

his/her return to school. Encourage your student to call a friend for the homework. If you are absent for 2 or more days, please call the office before 10:00 a.m. to request

the books and assignments. Books and assignments may only be picked up after dismissal.

Daily Requirements

All students are required to use their homework agenda to record daily and long-term assignments.

All assignments must be completed and turned in on time. Students are responsible for obtaining missed assignments and for completing all

missed assignments due to absence from school. Students have one day for each day absent to make up work.

If a student misses a class or classes for an early dismissal or late arrival, it is the student’s responsibility to hand in any HOMEWORK assignments due that day to their teachers before they leave school or after their late arrival. It is expected that students returning to school the next day after an early dismissal will be prepared with the assignment due that day.

Work should be neatly done in pencil or blue/black erasable ink. It is the students’ responsibility to complete work missed and see that the teacher

receives the assignments. Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience. Homework should be a top priority. Providing needed supplies, a quiet homework environment, plenty of praise and support go a long way to ensure your child’s academic success. Contact the teacher if a problem arises.

Late Homework – Please check individual teacher policies.

Midterm and Final Exams

Sixth Grade: As an introduction to taking comprehensive semester exams, sixth grade will be taking a cumulative test in core subjects mid-year and at the end of the school year. These tests will count for 10% of the semester grade. These exams will be taken during a regular class period. Sixth grade students will not leave early on exam days. They will be taking one exam per day – over the course of four days. Seventh and Eighth Grade students will take semester exams in core subjects mid-year and at the end of the school year. These testes count for 20% of the semester grade. Two exams are taken each day. Students are dismissed after exams are completed on the designated dates (See Calendar for exam dates). Please make arrangements for your student to be picked up after exams. If your child is not being picked up by a parent, please send a note to the homeroom teacher.

Field Trips

In order to keep up with the paper work and charges for field trips, students must have money and a parent-signed permission form in by the assigned date. Students who fail to bring to school both money and form have chosen to forfeit the trip. Since Middle School students are capable of keeping up with their responsibilities, we do not allow calling home on that date. Students need to show that they can follow the rules on a day to day basis. In fairness to the students who abide by HRA policies, those who have chosen to disregard school policy will not participate in field trips or special events. Reasons that may prevent participation in class trips or special events include but are not limited to:

Two or more suspensions

Ten or more demerits (conduct related)

Permission forms and monies not in on time

Constantly failing grades in one or more subjects

Ten or more absences (excused or unexcused, except in cases of verified severe illness or injury)

If a student has been excluded from a field trip, parents will run the risk of losing their deposit. Middle School boys are expected to wear long pants during field trips.

***Students must be in “Dress Uniform” for all field trips unless indicated on permission form. ***

Please note the following:

Field trips are an extension of the classroom experience and thus provide enrichment value to the curriculum.

All students are expected to participate in all classroom related field trips.

Students who do not attend (except in the case of illness) will remain home and incur a one day unexcused absence.

This policy does NOT apply to overnight trips, such as the 8th grade end of the year trip. For more information, please see the HRA Student Handbook.

Middle School Religion

Sixth Grade

This course will cover the Old Testament including Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the area around Rome and Greece. Students will be expected to memorize prayers and take tests/quizzes on the chapters covered in the book. Students will read Scripture pertaining to the topic from the Bible.

Seventh Grade

The title of this year’s program is Jesus the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Through their texts, the

students will reflect on the person of Jesus and on their baptismal call to walk with Him along the way

to the Father. They will listen to the truth of His teaching, and they will meditate on the gift of new life

that is theirs through the sacraments because of His dying and rising. They will be challenged to

respond to Jesus by walking His way and encouraging others to follow Him, by living according to the

truth He taught, and by sharing his life and love with all whom we meet.

Eighth Grade

Using the text, Christ Our Life, The Church Then and Now, we expect to deepen the understanding

and faith of the students by covering such topics as “The Mystery of the Church” wherein we trace the

roots of our faith, “The History of the Church” which explores the church down through history to the

present, and “The Witness of the Church” where the students will be made aware of what it means to

live a Christian life.

Eighth Grade Confirmation

The students will prepare for Confirmation and their commitment to Christian life using the text Confirmed in the Spirit.

2015/2016 Middle School Spanish Syllabus

Profesora Wathen

My Spanish classes focus on all aspects of learning a language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I expect my students to incorporate the grammatical basis presented in class to build the communication skills paramount to living in a multicultural community, travelling abroad, and even to studying a language other than Spanish.

Following the curriculum as set by the Diocese of Nashville, in Middle School Spanish we will explore vocabulary for everyday life, grammar for written and spoken conversation, and the various cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.

Classroom Policies

Students are expected to follow all directions. Homework assignments, writing tasks, projects, notebook checks, quizzes, and tests will all be

graded out of 100% and will have equal weight. Students will have homework ready to turn in at the beginning of every class. I will accept one

late homework assignment per quarter; any other late or missing assignments will receive a zero.

Class Supplies

3-ring binder - use dividers to make the following sections: “Referencia”, for reference handouts and notes that you will refer back to. “Actividades”, for bell and class work. “Tarea”, for homework assignments, quizzes, and projects that have been handed back.

Loose-leaf paper Pen or pencil Textbook

Regarding Translations

Bilingual dictionaries, both print and online, are vital to any language class. I myself recommend WordReference.com and GoogleTranslate, but only as vocabulary aids. Attempting to translate verbs, phrases, and complete sentences often goes awry, and it negates the grammar we are learning in class. The product also often has very obvious mistakes or reflects structures far above the students’ level. See this video for an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch/?v=0e8ybvu83As. I will not assign anything that exceeds what we have covered in class. If I detect an extensive online translation, I will contact the student’s parent to discuss how he or she is completing homework, and he or she will receive half-credit on the assignment.

Junior High Social Studies

2015 – 2016

Mr. Walsh Class Descriptions:

6th Grade – Textbook: Discovering Our Past – A History of the World, Early Ages.

Workbook: Maps, Globes, and Graphs – Level F

We begin our journey with a study of early human societies and how man had to adapt to their environment in order to survive. Then we will investigate the influence geography played on the people of Mesopotamia. Next, we travel to the land of pyramids, pharaohs, and the Nile as we examine the land of Ancient Egypt and Kush. India beckons with its many different and interesting religions, and we follow that up with a visit to Early China, where we will look at its many unique contributions to the world. We finish the first semester by exploring the land of the Israelites, where we will study everything from Moses to the development of Judaism. After Christmas, we move into the cultures of Greece and Rome as we examine the contributions of these people to Western Civilization. We finish the year by looking at the role of Christianity in the world, from Jesus and the apostles, to the role of the Church in Medieval Europe. Throughout the year we will also incorporate geography into the schedule by working on our development of information and map skills using the Maps, Globes, and Graphs workbook.

7th Grade – Textbooks: Discovering Our Past – A History of the World, Modern Times

and Tennessee – The History of an American State We begin our year of 7th Grade studies by examining the decline of the Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity We will examine the role of the early Church and the people who played a pivotal role. We follow it with the history of the Islamic civilization and the life of Mohammad. We will then study the peoples of the Americas prior to the voyages of Columbus. We will take a quick look at Imperial China, and the civilizations of Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia, as we finish out the semester in Medieval Europe and life in the Middle Ages. After Christmas, it’s time for the qualifying rounds in the National Geography Bee, after which we

will return to Europe for our study of the Renaissance and Reformation Then it is on to the Age of Exploration and the discovery and conquest of the Americas by the European explorers. We conclude our study of world history by looking at the advances made during the Scientific Revolution and the Age of the Enlightenment, and finish with the political revolutions of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. We finish out the year by examining the history and government of our home state, Tennessee!

8th Grade – Textbook: American History

and: Civics – Participating in Government We will begin with an extensive look at the history of this great country, the United States of America! We will start from the beginnings of this land as home to the early Native Americans then continue to the Age of European Exploration. As we take our shape as the thirteen original colonies, to the road to revolution as we strive to become independent. We continue with the early years as a country where we defined ourselves through the Constitution to the Age of Expansion under Jefferson. But wait, there’s more! During the second semester, we will look at the conflict that divided this country, The American Civil War and the period of Reconstruction. We will examine our role in the

Page 13: Middle School Policy - Holy Rosary Catholic Church and ... Middle Sshool Poli… · Demerit Demerits Two silent ... Students and Parents sign the demerit slip, ... All students are

13

Industrial Revolution and our emergence as a global power as a result of the conflicts of the 20th Century. We conclude the year with an examination of our role in the world in the 21st Century, and the ideologies that make us unique as Americans; our economic, legal, and political systems..

Classroom Requirements:

Be Prepared o Bring notebook, textbook, planner, and appropriate writing tools to class.

Be Prompt o Enter the classroom quietly. o Please be in your seat when the bell rings, as class begins at that time.

Be a Polite and Positive Participant o Keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.

o Speak in a normal tone of voice and listen attentively. o Respect the ideas and opinions of others.

Be Productive o Take pride in your work, turn it in on time and always do your best.

Homework Policy:

My expectation is that assignments will be neatly done, adequately completed, and submitted on time. Work that does not meet acceptable levels will be returned to the student and due the following day with a parent signature.

During the course of each marking period should a student miss the due date of an assignment, they may submit it the following day for a ten (10) percent reduction of the grade. All subsequent late assignments will be reduced by fifty (50) percent. Work not submitted, or resubmitted, will result in a zero for that assignment.

Long term assignments (projects) are due on the due date!

Grading Policy:

During the course of the grading period, the student on a variety of class activities will earn multiple grades. Each assignment is important and acts as building blocks in achieving the knowledge and understanding of the topic.

A general outline of the overall weight of each marking period grade follows:

Chapter Tests and Projects 50% Homework 20% Quizzes/Classwork 20% Class Preparation and Participation 10%

Student Agenda (provided by school) Homework from previous night

Textbooks:

This year in science, students will be able to write in their science books and keep them at the end of the year. Since these books will get a lot of wear and tear I recommend covering the outside with clear plastic cover film- it is adhesive and provides more protection to the soft cover of the book. This is not required. These new books come with many activities and online support for students. Students are able to access to the online support through two methods: 1) the company’s app on an iPad, or 2) the company’s website on a computer. Absentee Policy:

When a student is absent, one member of the class collects their missing work. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they have all of their assignments. At the end of class, students will discuss with the teacher their due dates for various assignments.

It is the student’s responsibility, not the teacher’s, to collect this work and see that it is handed in. I recommend that the student check in with the teacher to ask any questions about the missed work and make sure that there are no other missing assignments. Students have one day for every day that they were out plus one extra day to make up the work. Missed tests and quizzes will be made up in a timely manner determined on a case by case basis. Homework Policy:

Homework is an integral part of the curriculum and essential to reinforcing material that was taught in class. Homework is posted on the board every day. Students must copy it into their agenda before leaving class. Students will not receive credit for late homework after 1 late homework assignment for each quarter. Homework is considered late if it is incomplete and/or not on the top of the desk ready to be checked at the beginning of class. Extra Help:

Students may get extra help during homeroom with the permission of their teacher. If additional help is needed, students may stay after school by appointment only and with a signed note or e-mail from a parent indicating their permission. Parents will need to arrange for their student’s transportation home. Additionally, students may use the class discussion board on the edmodo class website to ask fellow students and the teacher for help. This discussion board will be carefully monitored by the teacher. Grading Policy:

Several factors make up the quarterly grade in Science. In addition to daily classwork, students will have regular homework assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, and laboratory reports to complete. There are a myriad of opportunities for students to do well and improve their averages. Therefore, there will be NO extra credit assignments. The breakdown of the quarterly grade is as follows:

Tests & Projects 40% Quizzes/Pop-Quizzes/Labs 30% Classwork/participation 20% Homework 10%

Page 16: Middle School Policy - Holy Rosary Catholic Church and ... Middle Sshool Poli… · Demerit Demerits Two silent ... Students and Parents sign the demerit slip, ... All students are

16

Effort and participation are very important. Students are expected to be on time to class and to come prepared. Throughout the quarter, students will earn a weekly “Participation” grade. Every student automatically starts the week with (and hopefully stays at) 100 points. For every day that a student comes to class unprepared (late or without all necessary materials) and/or does not participate appropriately, they will lose a maximum of five points per class. Tests/Quiz Correction Policy:

If a student has concerns about their grade, they should discuss with the teacher the reason(s) behind their current average and the necessary steps to take. Any failed tests, projects, or quizzes may be corrected to receive a 70%. In order to receive credit students must correct their answer with evidence from their notes, textbook, or classwork. This will be done using the form that Miss Sharbel staples to the top of any failed test. Test, project, or quiz corrections must be signed by the student’s parent(s) / guardian(s) and handed in on the Monday following the day the work was returned to the student- they will not be accepted late. If absent, the student must turn in test corrections at a date determined by Miss Sharbel.

Note: It’s much easier to do well on a test the first time around because in addition to correcting previous mistakes, you still need to keep up and do the current work in all of your other classes. Lab Activities:

A good portion of the science curriculum involves hands-on lab activities. Students and parents are required to read and sign the Laboratory Safety Contract. In addition, all students will spend the first week of school going over all procedures and safety guidelines. There will be a Laboratory Safety Contract Quiz which all students must pass with a minimum of a 95% in order to participate in ANY labs. If needed, there will be one retake. ANY inappropriate behavior will NOT be tolerated for the safety of everyone in the room. Students who cannot conduct themselves in a safe and responsible manner during a hands-on activity or lab will result in the student being dismissed from the lab and receiving a zero for the lab work and a demerit.

Mrs. Wilhelm Grade 6 Mathematics

Text- Mathematics Course 1 (Holt McDougal) This text book can be accessed online. There is never a need to take the book home. Each student will receive a username and password. The website also provides practice exercises and tutorial videos, if you need extra help. The student’s experiences in the Middle School Mathematics Program are critical in preparing him/her for success in Algebra I or Geometry. In Grade Six, we begin laying the foundation for future mathematics courses on the high school level as well as mathematics in everyday life. My goal is that each student will gain the knowledge and skills necessary for a future job or career. My primary concern is to help all students gain greater confidence in their mathematical abilities. In order to reach this goal, the students need to cooperate with me and commit to doing their very best this year. This includes accepting their responsibilities, obeying school and class rules, and adhering to the homework guidelines. Student Responsibilities

Attending class on time

Being prepared for class with their covered textbook, pencil, notebook, folders, and agenda

Recording the homework assignment in the agenda

Completing all assigned homework and class work

Taking notes in their math notebook

Keeping all worksheets and handouts in the math folder

Mrs. Wilhelm Grade 6 Advanced Mathematics (Pre-Algebra) Text- Mathematics Grade 7 (Holt McDougal) This text book can be accessed online. There is never a need to take the book home. Each student will receive a username and password. The website also provides practice exercises and tutorial videos, if you need extra help. The student’s experiences in the Advanced Mathematics class of the Middle School Mathematics Program will be critical in preparing him/her for Algebra I in 8th Grade as well as Geometry in high school. In this class, the students will be building upon their understanding of mathematical concepts that will be used in higher level mathematics courses as well as mathematics in everyday life. The students will be expected to keep up with the quicker pace of instruction. More independent work and less guided practice may be required of the class when covering review topics. Students will be expected to have a more mature outlook on their responsibilities. My goal is to help the students master the fundamental mathematical skills taught in 6th and 7th grade in order to be prepared for Algebra I. To reach this goal, the students will need to cooperate with me and commit to doing their very best this year. Please refer to “Grade 6 Mathematics” for information on the following: Student Responsibilities Classroom Rules Homework Policy Grading Policy

Computers

Mrs. Kreh

Welcome to computer class with Mrs. Kreh! We have a set of computer curriculum

here at Holy Rosary that is designed to teach students about computers, keyboarding,

internet safety, and how to use common software programs, such as Microsoft Word,

Excel, and Power Point.

Students are expected to know and follow the AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) at all

times. Computers at HRA are only to be used for academic purposes, unless otherwise

directed by a teacher.

Some class time may be devoted to allowing students to use the lab computers in

order to complete work for another teacher from time to time.

All computer class work is to be completed in computer class, unless a student is

absent from class. Students should check with me upon return to school in order to

receive any make-up work for computer class.

All students will start with a grade of 100 in computer and points will be subtracted as

needed for incomplete or missing assignments.

I look forward to a wonderful year with your students!

b. A writing utensil and a red correcting pen

c. Vocabulary workshop book

d. A book for reading should be with them at all times

e. Agenda: students are expected to write down their homework daily

f. Proper Textbook for the class.

2. Students are expected to complete assignments neatly and on time.

3. Students are expected to ask questions to gain a better understanding of material presented.

4. Students are expected to read all assigned reading.

5. Students are expected to do their best at all times.

Classroom Rules

1. Follow all directions

2. Be respectful to all people and property.

Homework Policy

Homework is to be completed on time and done to the best of each student’s ability. Messy or incomplete work

will not be accepted. Students who do not turn in their homework when it is due, may turn it in the next day for

a reduced grade. However, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure I receive the work. Taking care of late

work should not take away class time from students who have completed their work on time. A good time to

turn in late work is during homeroom or break time. After one late grade per quarter, all other late work will

receive a zero.

No lates are allowed on Vocabulary Workshop assignments. A zero will be given on any late vocab

workshop homework.

Students are required to take at least 1 AR test each quarter for Literature. Students will be given a due

date and it is their responsibility to make sure the test is taken before that date. It is important not to

wait until the last minute to take this test. If the student is absent on the day it is due, they will not be

given any extra time to take the test.

Extra Credit

1. Each student may take an extra AR test as extra credit. This will count as a test grade. They may take

more than one test a quarter and I will take their highest grade to use as their extra credit grade. Tests

must be at least 5th

grade or higher.

Student Absence

If a student is absent, they must see the teacher for any work they have missed, even if they are given an

absent student sheet.

If a student is leaving school early or arriving late, the student needs to see the teacher and ask about

what they will be missing or turn in any work that is due.

Participation:

Effort and participation are very important. Students are expected to be on time to class and to come prepared.

Throughout the quarter, students will earn a weekly “Participation” grade. Every student automatically starts

the week with (and hopefully stays at) 100 points. For every day that a student comes to class unprepared (late

or without all necessary materials) and/or does not participate appropriately, they will lose a maximum of five

points per class.
