The outdoor gathering space connects the dining and meeting halls. The focal point of this area is the fire pit; an informal program element that guests of Haley Farm can congregate comfortably around while enjoying the view of the tree lined field.

The south facade of the proposed event

building has a dialogue with the walls of

Wawel Castle. The heavy concrete walls

protect the central courtyard just as the castle

walls were meant to defend what is within.

This relationship also speaks to

the ability of history and modern

structures to have a successful

existence in such close proximity to

one another.

Statement

The concept for a new masterplan is proposed for

the South Riverfront of downtown Knoxville in order

to activate the river’s edge for the public, and this will

encourage migration of people back into the urban

center of the city

Collaborators

Page 47: Michael Turko Undergraduate Architecture Portfolio

47

The plan extends across three milesof the river, and responds to differentlandmarks and districts on the northern front. Stretches of housing blocks are intertwined with nodesthat provide markets, services, and entertainment for the city. All of these elements are brought together by the new boulevard, which promotes a healthy street scape comparable to that of Gay Street. Along the river’s edge is a river walk for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The walk includes new boating docks as well as piers for public use.

49

After masterplanning, each individual in this project chose a separate zone of housing within the scope to further develop. The focus here is Park Dwelling, on the east end of the south riverfront. In this neighborhood, the dwellings undulate through one of thelarger park spaces, and in this way all recieve a view of the TennesseeRiver. There is an even mix of unittypes ranging from one bedroom up tothree bedrooms per unit. The tenantshere would have many opportunities to interact with one another within multiple scales of communal space.

Figuratively, it is the boundary definingan ideal world that is within a harsh natural landscape. This typology is
