MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

DECEMBER IS UPON US

As I write this newsletter it occurred to me that Sunday is the first day in December and we are less than four weeks away from Christmas. As you look in the shopping centres and see the Christmas lights going up in your local area, we gain the sense of excitement and anticipation.

As we prepare for this special time of year, I encourage each of us to think about the meaning of Christmas and the special gift that God has given us - His Son Jesus Christ. As you celebrate the birth of Jesus remember that this was a part of a bigger plan which reflects the Grace that God has shown us. Yes Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, but I would like to

encourage you to remember the other aspects of Jesus’ life. Remember that whilst Christ was on Earth, he revealed God’s word and gave us an insight of God’s power and control over death.

I would encourage you to take time as you plan for Christmas to read God’s word, available to us in the Bible. Read of Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection as detailed in the Gospels. I also encourage you to reflect on another time of Christian celebration - Easter. Remember that this is a time where we witnessed the full gift that God was willing to give us - that he loved us so much that he sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross so that we could be saved and have eternal life.

As we move into December, could I encourage you to attend events at the College and churches which are planned to celebrate the birth of Christ? Consider going to the special services and Carols by Candlelight events at your local churches.

I know that the congregations of many of our churches would welcome you at their special events. If you are not sure of which church to go to, perhaps you could consider joining a number of Broughton families at one of the congregations of Campbelltown Anglican churches:

CHRISTMAS ON THE LAWN

I know that there is a buzz of excitement as students look forward to the Christmas Celebration tomorrow night. The College prefect team, all classes in the Junior School, the bands and choirs and other groups in the Senior School have been rehearsing and are now ready to go. The P & F have organised the coffee van, the ice-cream van and supplies of candles, reindeer antlers, soft drinks etc.

I encourage everyone to join us for this College community event – it is always a great evening.

OUR LOCAL MEMBER VISITS US

Mr Bryan Doyle (Member for Campbelltown) visited the College yesterday afternoon to meet and talk to staff. The College has returned to the Campbelltown electorate after the latest redistribution. Mr Doyle represents our area, following on from Mr Jai Rowell (Member for Wollondilly) who also represented us well.

Mr Doyle shared his passion for the people of the Macarthur region – describing Campbelltown as the ‘Opal of the South West’. Mr Doyle and his family have a long link with the Campbelltown region, with his ancestors moving to the area in the early years of the colony of NSW. He is proud to be able to represent the area as it continues to develop into one of the major centres of Sydney.

Mr Doyle also shared how he demonstrates his faith in the Parliament – being willing to address some of the major social issues that face us at this time.

I thank Mr Doyle for his continued support of the College. I ask that you keep Mr Doyle in your prayers as he represents our views and works to continually improve this already great region.

Headmasters and Senior Executive. Congratulations to Mrs Halloran on being asked to represent the state on this important project which will have an impact on the leadership in schools over the next decade.

MRS GAJDA

Congratulations to Mrs Gajda (Junior School) on the completion of her studies for the award of Masters of Teaching. I commend Mrs Gajda on completing this course and gaining outstanding results whilst working full time, and balancing these huge tasks with the roles of wife and mum.

I have appointed Mrs Karen Roberts as the Out of School Hours Care Coordinator commencing 9 December 2013. Mrs Roberts has extensive experience in working with young people through her roles in Christian camp programs and supporting and mentoring in sporting associations. She is excited to be taking on this new role and is very appreciative of the support and

encouragement she is receiving from Mrs Staples in this transition period.

Mrs Jacqui Egan and Miss Jessica Walsh have been appointed to the roles of Out of School Hours Care Assistants. The children who access our OSHC program will be excited to know Mrs Egan and Miss Walsh are joining the team, and they will continue to enjoy the different activities and the friendships the ladies have developed with them during their work as Casuals in our centre.

YEAR 6 DINNER

I am aware that Mrs Halloran has also written her congratulations to Year 6 for the manner in which they presented themselves at the Year 6 Dinner held on Monday night, but I would also like to say ‘well done’.

Year 6 – you looked amazing. Many mums and dads had a tear in their eye as they saw that their ‘baby boy and girl’ had grown into a fine young man and young woman. I was extremely impressed with your manners and behavior during the dinner and the way you all had a great time of fun and fellowship together. You made us all very proud.

I would also like to commend the Year 11 Hospitality students and their teachers for preparing and serving the meal for the dinner. The quality of the food and the manner in which we were served was extremely impressive. The College is very fortunate to have students who are willing to serve others in such a way.

YEAR 6 - NIGHT OF NOTABLES

I would also like to commend Year 6, Miss Winkler and Miss Koeller for the Night of Notables held on Wednesday afternoon. The passion students showed as they shared their presentations and answered questions about their Notable of Choice showed the effort and hard work they all put into this project. I enjoyed talking to many famous people – Dr Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Desmond Tutu, Rosa Parks, Cathy Freeman, Albert Einstein, Houdini and Cleopatra to name just a few.

I would also like to thank parents for their support and assistance of their children in researching and preparing costumes and food for this evening. The students and staff really value your support.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Siobhan Burt (Year 4) has been a member of the National Institute of Performing Arts Australia (NIYPAA) for the last 2 years. This year, Siobhan was awarded with the honour of High Performer for the Australian Youth Choir, Campbelltown. I commend Siobhan for her willingness to be involved in community groups and events and congratulate her on her achievements.

I congratulate Brandon Kemmis (Year 7) on his achievements in the State Championships for Men’s Gymnastics Level 3 held in October.

Brandon has been competing in gymnastics for 3 years and participates in the required apparatus of rings, pommel, mushroom, vault, high bar, parallel bar and floor exercise. Brandon achieved good results for each apparatus.

2014 FEES

A number of parents have asked about whether fees have been finalised for the 2014 academic year so that they can plan their household budgets. Unfortunately, this has not been possible due to schools not being informed on the exact funding they will receive from the Federal and State Governments for next year. This has made it impossible for Schools Council to finalise the College budget for 2014.

VACATION CARE PROGRAM – DECEMBER 2013 AND JANUARY 2014.

The College’s Vacation Care Program will operate on Thursday 12 December 2013 and weekdays from Monday 16 December to Friday 20 December. The Centre will reopen on Monday 6 January 2013 and operate until Wednesday 31 January 2013.

Please note Vacation Care will not operate on Friday 13 December 2013 to allow staff to prepare for the Vacation Care Program.

Online bookings for Vacation Care in the December 2013 and January 2014 vacation periods are now open. St Peter’s families are also being informed in their newsletter.

Vacation Care bookings are made online ONLY. To make a booking please go to the College Intranet page http://learning.broughton.nsw.edu.au in Quick Links click on Vacation Care Bookings and enter the code QZ2A6.

JUNIOR SCHOOL MRS C HALLORAN HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

It has been a very busy but special week for our Grade 6 children. They looked absolutely amazing on Monday night for their Year 6 dinner. My thanks to our Junior School Captains Emma and Nathan who presented a wonderful speech on their reflections of their time in Junior School. Many parents spent countless hours here on the day transforming the Function Centre into an enchanted forest. It was truly spectacular! A huge thanks to the amazing efforts of

Mrs Johnson (Connor 6W) for her many hours of coordination throughout the year in fundraising, shopping and decorating for this event. It was a wonderful way to wish our students the very best for their Senior School years. We will miss them greatly.

On Wednesday night, in slightly different dress to Monday, the Year 6 students were again in the hall, this time for their Night of Notables. Students were able to present to their families the culmination of their HSIE research

Page 6: MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER DECEMBER IS ......Lincoln, Desmond Tutu, Rosa Parks, Cathy Freeman, Albert Einstein, Houdini and Cleopatra to name just a few. I would also like to thank

assignment. They have been researching about a Notable person, either from the past or present, who has made a notable achievement and influence on the world as we now know it. Students were required to put together a display which included posters, videos, books, photos or games. They also supplied a piece of food or drink from the time of their Notable and dressed as their Notable. Students had prepared questions and families were invited to talk with Year 6 as if they were the Notable themselves. It was a fantastic evening and all went away amazed and more knowledgeable! Awesome work Year 6!

The IPSSO sport came to a conclusion on Wednesday with 3 of our Senior teams participating in the Semi Finals. Thank you to all the staff who coached and encouraged our students, and thank you students for your participation and sportsmanship throughout the season.

Senior Basketball Miss Taylor

15-28 Well done to all players! You all played an excellent game of Basketball! You showed excellent defense and some great passing. Well done team!

Senior Oz Tag Miss Koeller

7-8 A nail biting game played with awesome focus. Well done on your efforts in the Semi Finals.

Senior Soccer Miss Winkler

1-2 Well done girls. I think this was your best and most evenly matched game this term.

Next week we have many events happening across Junior School. On Monday our Stage 2 students are going on an excursion. On Tuesday we will be having our End of Year Chapels and also our Stage 2 Music concert will be held, to showcase what the students have been learning this semester. On Wednesday, four of our senior tennis students will be competing with students from St Peter’s in a competition run by our coach Mrs Kings. On Thursday, we will be having our End of Term Awards assembly which will include the induction of our Prefects and Captains for 2014, as well as various other awards and musical items. On Friday, Our Year 1 students are having an Open session in the Function Centre and our Year 6 students will be showcasing their acting skills in the Broughton Tales. Yes, we are certainly ending the year in style! Please read below for more details regarding these events.

I look forward to seeing all families tomorrow night at the College Christmas Event. It should be an absolutely fantastic night that involves all Junior School classes. Bring your cameras! Some of the JS teachers will be doing face painting, so come along and say hi before the concert begins.

PRIMARY MUSIC SOLO NIGHT

Last Thursday thirty six students of the Primary School showcased their musical talents on a variety of instruments including piano, violin, cello, flute, guitar and voice. All students performed exceptionally well. Thank you to the tutors who placed a great deal of time and effort into getting the students up to performance standard. Some students used the Solo Night as a rehearsal for their upcoming AMEB exams. Best of luck to all students sitting their exams over the next two weeks.

YEAR 3 METAPHOR AND SIMILES SENTENCES

This term, Year 3 has learnt all about similes and metaphors. First, they created a simile sentence. Then, they learnt to turn the simile into a metaphor. Take a look at some of their amazing work:

‘The dark black tornado thrashes the big terrific tall buildings like a big hairy monster.’ Isabella Thompson.

‘The thunder is pounding like a trumpet in the sky.’ Ashton Slatyer.

‘The midnight fire is a claw slicing through the woods.’ Nicholas Webster and Hayley Morris.

CHRISTMAS CHAPEL – TUESDAY 3 DECEMBER

We welcome the Evangelical Sisters of Mary to our Christmas Chapel services. They will be presenting the story of Christmas in story and song. Families and friends are welcome to join us.

1.30pm Primary Chapel

2.10pm Infants Chapel (please note that there will be not be any Chapel service on Monday 2 December)

BAC@PLAY CHRISTMAS PARTY

All past, present, new members of BAC@Play are welcome to come to our Christmas party. We will have special activities and yummy goodies to share.

Wednesday 4 December 8.30am – 10.30am OSHC Centre

TOYS AND TUCKER

Next week is your last week to donate to Anglicare’s Toys’n’Tucker. According to a recent study by developmental Pyschologist Marilyn Price Mitchell, children who engage in acts of kindness boosts serotonin which heals emotions, calms people down and makes them happy. Acts of kindness also allows children to experience increased wellbeing, popularity and acceptance among peers. (Daily Telegraph, 25 November 2013)

Suggestions of items to give:

• Basic toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, hair products, soap • Hair accessories • Books • Puzzles • Activity books • Snack food

SCHOOL SHOES

I know, I am getting in a little early but when you are purchasing school shoes for the new year, please remember our policy as outlined in the student handbook.

All students are required to wear enclosed black leather, lace-up, polished school shoes with the College uniform (no Velcro) and must wear (predominantly) white joggers or sports shoes with the sports uniform.

SLATE WEEK

This week in SLATE the students enjoyed the giant pile of soil! The students added another layer of soil and a few more potatoes to their potato bags and moved them up the SLATE garden. Ms Thomas also helped the students plant some corn. We were also lucky enough to have Mr and Mrs Price along with Ms Thomas and her husband set up 8 more garden beds for SLATE. We look forward to planting more and learning about sustainable living.

Phillip Southam also shared what he is doing at home with his vegetable garden. Check out the photos of his growing garden

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

As we approach the end of the year it will be a very busy time for the Senior School as we prepare for the final events of 2013.

Year 11 has received their yearly reports and the rest of the Senior School will receive them over the next two weeks. Parents are most welcome to contact the College if they wish to discuss their child’s report.

A reminder once again of the end of year activities which begin with the Christmas Carols Service on Saturday commencing at 6.30 for 7.00pm. On Monday and Tuesday Year 10 will participate in Peer Support training followed on Wednesday by them completing “All Your

Own Work”. On Thursday the End of Year Awards Assembly will take place. Parents, family members and friends are most welcome to attend commencing at 8.45am.

In the last week of term, many students will be involved in Presentation Night practices in preparation for this event on Wednesday 11 November.

Congratulations to Year 10 for their successful involvement in the Work Experience and Dusty Boots programs this week. I have heard extremely positive news about how well our students did. Well done.

It is wonderful to see the students really getting behind the Toys n Tucker appeal. Students deposit their gifts in House Tutor then these are moved to the IRC where House Points are awarded and stripes on the candy canes will appear - as a tally of House Points for gifts deposited. I thank both the College Prefects and the Year 10-12 SRC for coming up with the idea of a competition to help motivate the students into giving generously. House points will be given for the winning House. Collection will take place at the end of week 10 so you still have time to donate to this worthy cause.

Lifeline Gift wrapping - If anyone is interested in being involved with this, I have dates, times and venues, so see me at my office or check the noticeboards for further information.

YEAR 9 ELECTIVE HISTORY EXCURSION

On Thursday 21 November, Year 9 Elective History visited the Jewish Museum in Darlinghurst to continue our study of the effect on a population, of terrorism that is imposed by a government.

A man called Tom, who had been a six year old when he and his pregnant mother were sent to a concentration camp and his father was taken away by the Nazis, told his moving story of survival.

BROUGHTON Newsletter-10

We were taken on a tour of the museum and challenged by our guide to think about the implications of the photos and artefacts we saw.

The tour guide was amazing and the survivor's story was astonishing. Even though some of the artefacts (especially the wall dedicated to all the children who had died in the Holocaust) were horrible, we were very glad we went.

It was interesting ... lots of fun ... cool!

By Kyle Bain, Claire Smith, Samantha Webb and Brandon Welsh.

CAREERS

Year 10 are currently completing work experience this week. It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to investigate the nature of work in the real world. Some of our students are currently undertaking a community service program, called Dusty Boots. Rev Grant, Mrs Hasler and Mr Margin have been supervising the students in the Lockhart district. The students have visited a nursing home, carried out some gardening and have visited the local school as well as some sight-seeing on the way. It is wonderful to see that Broughton is moving throughout our country district to spread the Word.

It is time for the current Year 9 to think about what they would like to do next year. If interested in the zoo, applications need to be with Mrs Wiseman before the end of term for next year.

YEAR 7-9 SRC VEGETABLE GARDEN

This year the Years 7-9 SLC have had the opportunity to plant a Vegetable garden. It is located in the Senior School Creative Arts block.

After some hard work and a lot of watering, we have been very fortunate in this ambition and have now been rewarded by seeing the garden flourish. We have planted a range of different vegetables (spring onions), fruits (strawberries, tomatoes) and herbs (parsley, mint), which have all grown into beautiful plants. We are all very proud of this garden and how well it has been growing. We would like to thank those who put time and effort into this project and all the support we have received from the Senior School. As we continue to care and look after the garden, we hope to find other ways in the future to benefit the Broughton community. This year has been full of many great ideas and successful contributions from both SRC's and we hope to continue to do so in the years to come.

BEACH EXCURSIONS

With summer approaching and the beach calling, Year 9 PDHPE students have been developing their lifesaving skills. On top of developing rescue skills and learning the fundamentals of life support through DRABCD, students attended an excursion to North Wollongong Beach. Students were able to put the skills they have learnt into practice as well as developing a good understanding of how to read the surf. Many students had the opportunity to experience being in a rip and how to

Page 11: MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER DECEMBER IS ......Lincoln, Desmond Tutu, Rosa Parks, Cathy Freeman, Albert Einstein, Houdini and Cleopatra to name just a few. I would also like to thank

BROUGHTON Newsletter-11

safely manage this situation. We were particularly blessed with wonderful weather on the day!

Year 10 PASS enjoyed a day at North Wollongong Beach last Friday and although not the ideal beach day it was a valuable and rewarding experience. The purpose was to further understand the risk associated with beach swimming and surfing in Australia and learn the basics of stand-up surfing. Many of the students were able to fulfil a challenging goal of standing up on their surf boards for the first time and most persevered in trying, onshore, north-east blown conditions. The Pines Academy were impressed with their ability, determination and behaviour. We also had time to play a little beach volleyball and soccer. We really do have a skilful bunch of students. Well done Year 10!

PRAYER POINTS

• Pray for the Christmas Event on Saturday, and for this great opportunity to outreach to the community. • Give thanks for the opportunities given to Year 10 students on Work Experience and the Dusty Boots program

and the great learning experience which our students had. • Pray for the Year 10 Peer Support training next week and the Year 7-11 End of Year Awards Assembly on

Thursday.
