Listen Up!

The wonderful Marieke from the Netherlands has been volunteering her services to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People NZ.

Marieke has been with us for a month helping with support training for our puppy raisers and developing online training videos for reference. She has been travelling around the North Island completing annual assessments and offering training support to our Recipients.

We are very lucky to have such a competent dog trainer assisting us. We simply couldn’t do everything we do without our amazing community behind us. Thank you to Marieke and to all of you for your continued support!

During this, our 20th year I have been constantly reminded of the values that have driven the Charity since it was originally founded.

We have always strived to treat everyone with respect and compassion, and to be friendly and personal. We have made a promise to be dependable, trustworthy and committed.

It is wonderful to see these values embodied in everything our volunteers, staff and supporters do.

The community of Hearing Dogs New Zealand is truly a special group of people.

We are humbled by all the support we receive from caring and thoughtful individuals and from community-minded businesses. We also feel touched by the difference our work makes to the lives of our Hearing Dog recipients.

As we look ahead, we aim to continue with our core business and train even more amazing Hearing Dogs to match the ever-growing demand.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us get this far, and we look forward to continuing to work with all our wonderful recipients, our outstanding volunteers and our lovely community.

Sue & Ebony

Our mission is to enhance the independence and well-being of Deaf and Hearing Impaired New

Zealanders through the provision of specially trained Hearing Dogs to internationally

recognised standards.

New Partnership - Sue & EbonyClare McLaughlin, from Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, said: “Ebony not only helps Sue on a daily basis by alerting her to sounds, but she also provides emotional support and companionship, which is really important as hearing loss can cause people to feel isolated. By wearing her assistance dog jacket in public, Ebony gives a visibility to Sue’s deafness which can make things easier for Sue when she’s interacting with others”.

Sue has written this lovely poem (RIGHT) which is yet another example of what a difference a Hearing Dog makes.

Volunteer Recognition Awards 2019Shirley and Colin Kelsen were presented with an award on the 17th June 2019 in recognition of their voluntary services to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People New Zealand.

For the past 15 years this couple have been serving this charity and the deaf community.

Volunteering started off with weekend minding of the dogs in training but now-a-days they are expert puppy raisers, getting new puppies from 8 weeks of age and raising them to be confident, happy and well behaved puppies ready to come into the training programme at our Training Centre in Hydro Road. They give 24 hour a day 7 days a week care for the puppies, toilet training them, teaching them basic commands and general good manners, socializing them with other dogs, children, adults, exposing them to lots of new situations in a safe manor. It is so important that the people raising our puppies follow the guidelines to ensure we end up with the right dog for us to train and this is where Shirley and Colin excel. They have been & are an intrical part of our charity.

Spring Cleaned Training CentreWe are sending a MASSIVE Hearing Dogs thank you to the wonderful team at Chemwash Taranaki who came out and cleaned all five of our buildings for free this week!

Not only did they do an absolutely amazing job, but they were so friendly and so wonderful to deal with.

We are extremely grateful for all of the hard work they did spring cleaning the outside of our buildings, and making them shine again. If you need any exterior cleaning done then make sure you get in touch with this great team.

For EbonyBy Sue Le Mesurier

During the past few monthsI have learnt the meanings of sniffs, grunts and barks

Every twitchof the ears a question,- or a statement

Under Claret Ashyou romp through multicoloured leaves,a weird contortionist

Under the Oaksyou hide amongst the daffodilsmore than a little crazy

Under the wide open sunyou wag your tail--- and exclamation mark!

Under ivory street lampsI’m beginning to know youAnd your rather bemused look

In your dark eyesI see the missing piecesI’ve been searching for

“Doggie i love you”Words from one of our many children who gladly

volunteer to help our puppies become confident. It is important for Hearing Dogs to feel safe around all people,

including children with their public access rights .

Email DatabaseWe are working on building up our email database. Please send us any email addresses of people who may like to receive our newsletters. Friends, family members, work colleagues - anyone you can think of that might be remotely interested in Hearing Dogs. The more people who know we exist, the better.

Our intention is for this form of communication to override a lot of the paper newsletters that are sent out, speeding up the process and more importantly, greatly reducing costs.

Dogs in TrainingDogs in training with Delwyn: It’s time to meet our trainees and read about their special personalities.

OLLIEOllie is such a character and loves to play. He is a big fan of ’tag you’re it” and ‘catch me if you can” when playing with his doggy pals.

BRIEBrie has a very sweet and gentle nature. This wee girl loves to tilt her head and listed to what ever I’m saying. Brie just wants to please and knows her job well.

ELLIEEllie is such a darling. She came into training as a playful young dog and has really matured into a lovely, confident and capable Hearing Dog.

ZOROZoro is a very, very adorable Shih Tzu who is easy going and always a pleasure to take out and about. Such a well mannered little fellow.
