Gallaudet University

Abraham Lincoln signed the charter to offer deaf students college courses in 1865.

Edward Miner Gallaudet, Thomas' son, was the first superintendent of the college.

The university is located in Washington D.C.

Invented the telephone in 1875. Initially tried to invent devices to help deaf people speak or to see sound.

Was a teacher of the deaf (oralism). Wife and mother deaf. Was successful in banning ASL from most

schools.

Helen Keller

Helen Keller

Became deaf and blind from illness at 19 months.

By age 6 she had learned over 60 home signs. Anne Sullivan taught Helen the manual

alphabet and became her interpreter. Helen graduated college at the age of 24.

William “Dummy” Hoy

William “Dummy” Hoy

Held many major league records. One still stands unbroken today. During one game he threw out three base runners at home plate from center field.

Lost hearing in one ear at age 25 due to treatment for an ear infection. Became fully deaf at the age of 29 when a grain of rice punctured the ear drum of her good ear.

Started in 1966.Uses both hearing and deaf actors.

Based in Connecticut it is a professional theatre group that travels around the world putting on plays in ASL (voice interpreted).

Marlee Matlin

Marlee Matlin

In 1986 won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She was not born deaf but became deaf at age 2.

Gallaudet University Protest

In March 1988 the students protested the selection of another hearing president for Gallaudet University. They shut the school down until the Board of Trustees (school board) selected I. King Jordan as Gallaudet University's first deaf president.

Heather Whitestone

In 1995 she became the first deaf woman to win the crown of Miss America.

Growing up she attended speech-only schools (oralism).
