Everyone is engaging in some type of field data collection. Whether it’s first time data collection for gIS mapping, asset management to show due diligence/reduce liability, routine inspections and maintenance or real-time, in the field, asset locates (i.e. valves hidden under leaves or snow). In many cases, this type of data collection takes the form of heading out into the field with a gPS or paper map in one hand, a field book or clipboard in the other, and a camera around your neck … there’s no arguing that this works, but it’s by far not the most efficient method.

even on the best of days it’s challenging to organize and manage data coming in from so many different sources (i.e. linking the gPS location to the field notes and the photo, etc.). there are also concerns about lost data as well as the sources of error introduced with manual data entry. then there is the frustration of when you get back to the office and for every day in the field, you spend two days sorting through the data you collected and manually re-entering it into a back end system. not only is this time consuming, but interpreting hand writing and re-organizing the data can introduce another source of error.

THERE IS A BETTER WAY…

there are solutions available that are user friendly, intuitive, minimize the use of paper or eliminate it all together, reduce common sources of error and automate the field data collection process where possible. Whether it’s a handheld unit or a truck mounted tablet, these devices combined with software, support and training are solutions designed to collect, organize, manage and store data from various sources in one location (on the handheld) where it can be easily downloaded or synchronized with a gIS, cAD, Asset management System or Database.

the software solutions range from general field data collection software (which can be configured for multiple different field data collection workflows), or software

which is industry/task specific. the hardware offers multiple options such as built-in cameras, barcode scanners, cellular modems, rFID (radio Frequency Identity Device), asset ID tags, gnSS (gPS), etc. to extend and accommodate a variety of workflow requirements. In many cases, it can also communicate with external devices such as utility locators, depth sonar, laser rangefinders and other devices via cable or bluetooth. You can think of it as a digital clipboard with a built-in camera, map book and gPS system at your fingertips.

WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A DATA COLLECTION SOLUTION? WHAT ACCURACY DO I REQUIRE?

If you are doing first time data collection, it’s usually recommended that you collect your data at 1 cm, 10 cm or sub-metre as base data while imagery is accurate to 10-20 cm in most areas. this level of accuracy is also preferred if you need to do real-time, in the field, asset locates. For example, when you need to shut off that valve, which is buried under 2 feet of snow, higher accuracy means less digging.

If you are doing asset inspections and asset maintenance on previously collected points, you may not need high accuracy and can use a 1-5 m accurate device to get you to the general area of the asset location.

HOW DO I ENSURE ACCURACY?

to get the specified precision of a professional gPS device you need to correct your data against base station data (accurate, control data) either in the field (real-time) at the time of collection with a cellular data connection or back at the office (post-processing) with an internet connection to a base station or base station network. cansel has set up can-net, canada’s largest and only federally accredited base station network to provide everyone from survey professionals to asset data collectors with the reliable, repeatable and accurate data they require. the alternative is to use uncorrected satellite signals which provide random accuracy and could place that fire hydrant in the middle

of a house on your map instead of the front lawn.

WHERE DO I DO MY WORK?

“Where” is important for two reasons. First, if you require high accuracy you need to be within a proximity of a base station or consider using other technologies and secondly, trees, buildings and anything else that partially obstructs your ‘sky view’ of the satellites creates a challenging environment for your equipment to deliver spatial accuracy. trimble, the global industry-leader in providing professional gPS/gIS field data collection solutions, has developed a technology called Floodlight, which has proven to be a game changer in the industry.

In a nutshell, it’s a combination of three things working together to give you the best possible accuracy when working in areas where your sky view of the satellites is partially obstructed: 1) more satellites, 2) algorithms that weed out the poor signals and lock onto the strong signals, and 3) an altitude measurement that helps with positioning.

CASE IH FARMALL SERIES TRACTORS:CONTINUE TO PROVIDE VERSATILITY TO MUNICIPAL WORKS

Municipalities across canada are responsible for a wide variety of tasks, and finding versatile and cost-effective equipment is of utmost importance. case IH offers a full line of Farmall® tractors that have proven to provide the versatility and reliability needed for nearly any job under a variety of working conditions.

the Hamilton conservation Authority in Hamilton, ontario, is the region’s largest environmental management agency. With about 4,400 hectares (10,900 acres) of water sources and recreational lands to manage, having the right equipment is essential.

“We invested in two Farmall 75c tractors,” says Don mcconnell, Fleet and construction manager. “case IH tractors provide the best performance for our dollar.”

clearing brush, moving boats to local marinas, mowing lawns and moving snow are a few of the ways that Hamilton conservation Authority uses their Farmalls.

With the help of a Farmall 50B cVt, even some of canada’s worst snowfalls have been pushed aside to clear parking lots and allow customers to enjoy a meal at two of canada’s most popular restaurants, Swiss chalet and Harvey’s.

the primary Farmall units for municipal use are the compact Farmall B cVt and Farmall B, as well as the utility Farmall A, Farmall c, Farmall U and Farmall 100A. the most prevalent case IH attachments used on these tractors are front-end loaders, rotary tillers, snow blowers, backhoes and rotary cutters.

cab comfort is a high priority for municipal workers, as many spend the majority of their day in the tractor. the spaciousness, as well as,

the heating and cooling options provided in the newly redesigned Farmall cab makes for a productive operator experience. the many functions, including a loader joystick, remote valves and easy-to-read instrument clusters, are strategically placed to make them easy to access.

the legendary case IH Farmall tractors celebrated their 90th year in 2013. they offer a rich history of providing rugged performance and great value to customers. the lineup’s multi-season functionality allows them to be useful year-round.

“When we invest in a new piece of equipment, we need to make sure it’s the best one for our buck,” says mcconnell. “case IH tractors have impressed everyone who has run them.”

BOBCAT M-SERIES TIER 4 E32I & E35I EXCAVATORSFEATURE INCREASED FUEL EFFICIENCY & INSTRUMENTATION ENHANCEMENTS

Page 9: MERG APWA Summer Issue 2014

Bobcat company has released two new tier 4 excavators — the e32i and e35i – which feature increased fuel efficiency and a new forward-mount instrumentation system that presents operators with many of the functions, aesthetics and visibility they have come to enjoy with Bobcat® loaders.

the new tier 4-compliant e32i and e35i have been designed as additional offerings from Bobcat company in the 3-ton class of compact excavators. the e32i and e35i are appealing options for rental customers and first-time equipment buyers. these two 24.8-horsepower excavators feature a direct-inject, 1.7-liter, naturally aspirated diesel engine that provides exceptional fuel economy while maintaining performance expectations for buyers in this excavator class.

INCREASED FUEL EFFICIENCY

the e32i conventional tail swing model and the e35i Zero tail Swing excavator are ideal for operating in confined areas. Additionally, these m-Series machines will provide exceptional fuel efficiency to reduce operating costs — up to an 8 percent decrease in fuel consumption — when operating in the machine’s eco mode.

EXTENDABLE ARM ADVANTAGE

Both tier 4 excavator models can be equipped with the optional extendable arm, which is a telescoping arm that provides the best of both worlds — power and reach. the extendable arm option provides additional reach beyond the standard arm, and allows for the use of a hydraulic clamp, something that is not available with any other compact excavator extendable arm on the market. the clamp capability is an ideal solution for contractors wanting to pick up and place material such as rocks, landscaping materials and debris in site preparation applications.

FORWARD-MOUNT INSTRUMENTATION IMPROVEMENTS

A new forward-mount instrumentation system designed for enhanced functionality and improved ergonomics is being introduced with the e32i and e35i. the new forward location allows the operator to maintain awareness of machine vitals without losing focus on the task at hand and also improves ergonomics when the operator is interacting with the panel. this instrumentation system presents operators of Bobcat excavators with many of the functions, aesthetics and visibility they have come to enjoy with Bobcat loaders. From the operator’s viewpoint, the location of the panel also aligns with the existing cab components and work group structures to maintain visibility to the attachment.

An optional deluxe instrumentation panel includes an integrated keyless start system that provides for one assignable owner code, and up to eight operator codes. the deluxe panel also provides an eco-mode setting, access to fuel consumption data, attachment operating tips and detailed engine and hydraulic systems information. the m-Series excavator’s optional deluxe instrumentation panel features multi-lingual functionality, similar to other Bobcat products.

M-SERIES MACHINES

Like all m-Series excavators, these new tier 4-compliant models feature convenient fingertip activated control of the boom swing function and auxiliary hydraulic circuits. Features such as auto-idle throttle and auto-shift travel are standard equipment for the new excavators. Auto-idle throttle contributes to reduced fuel consumption and easier communication between the operator and workers. the excavator will automatically idle the engine when the machine functions are not used for approximately four seconds, saving valuable fuel. Auto-shift travel automatically shifts the machine out of high range without having to manually downshift.

A total of 13 Bobcat attachments can help these two versatile machines do more than dig. they include augers, breakers, plate compactors, grading buckets, trenchers and rippers to name a few. the X-change™ attachment is a mounting system, standard on most models — including the e32i and e35i — increases productivity because it allows the operator to quickly change attachments as jobsite requirements change.

Another option is the Hydraulic X-change™ system, which allows the operator to change buckets without even leaving the seat of the excavator. Additionally, the X-changesystem’s unique design maintains optimal “pin-on” bucket geometry to ensure arm and bucket forces are not compromised.

ELGIN EAGLE: MAKES A CLEAN SWEEP

Page 12: MERG APWA Summer Issue 2014

By early August, toronto is usually a quiet place – too hot is the city’s downtown core, and those who are not already in cottage country, cool off at the beach. not this year! come August 17th, toronto will play host to nearly 6,000 public works professionals from over 15 countries who will attend the largest gathering of public works professionals in north America. the American Public Works Association (APWA) International Public Works congress & exposition.

It is the first time in 25 years that this major industry event is being held in canada. APWA’s canadian counter-part, the oPWA, is finalizing details to make sure it sets the perfect stage for the “Best Show in Public Works”.

A NEW PERSPECTIVE

“APWA membership includes public works professionals from canada, and the last APWA annual congress held in canada was in 1988,” said APWA President ed gottko, (Public Works Leadership Fellow) PWLF, of new Jersey. “toronto is an especially exciting location for congress, because it’s an international city of warmth, openness, energy and style enriched by the fusion of traditions, passions and ways of looking at life of over 100 cultures,” says gottko.

making toronto the venue for the 2014 APWA conference is viewed as a great opportunity to gain a new perspective and learn new best practices. they could not have chosen a better venue for inspiring ideas as toronto’s recent innovations in public works are second to none: the city of toronto’s partnership with enwave energy corporation provides an alternative to conventional air conditioning for many downtown buildings

APWA CONGRESS...

THE “BEST SHOW IN PUBLIC WORKS” IS UNDERWAY!

APWA CONGRESS...

THE “BEST SHOW IN PUBLIC WORKS” IS UNDERWAY!

through the use of a Deep Lake Water cooling system. this method uses the cold Lake ontario water to cool buildings during the summer months. In fact, the venue for this year’s APWA, the metro toronto convention centre, was the very first toronto building to benefit from this initiative when it was implemented in 2004. Since then, the centre has reported significant reductions in electricity consumption and greenhouse gas (gHg) emissions.

Another innovative toronto public works initiative is the city’s investment in Bixi bikes: very popular among downtown commuters, students and tourists alike, this public bike rental system covers the entire downtown core. People can rent bikes at designated stations, ride to where they need to go, and drop them off at any station afterwards.

GUEST SPEAKERS

As the congress is returning to canada it only seems fitting that the impressive lineup of keynote speakers is headed by canadian icon and former commander of the International Space Station chris Hatfield. the now retired astronaut whose daily tweets from space became a global sensation in 2012, is going to address audiences on August 18 at 8:30 a.m. to explain why “the sky is not the limit”.

Another focus on the future will be provided by Planetary Futurist and Best-Selling Author Alex Steffen, who will speak about the content of his most recent book: “carbon Zero, imagining communities that can save our planet” on August 20th at 11:00 a.m.

more canadian focus is provided by speakers Jennifer Keesmaat, chief Planner of the city of toronto who will be sharing her “insight into toronto” and “how to create places where people flourish” on August 17 at 10:00 a.m., and Public Sector Advocate Ian Hill will

present a “call to action: what I’ve learned about leadership from the canadians” on August 19th at 8:30 a.m.

NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES

meet and mingle with peers from across your province or around the world at planned events – or create your own networking opportunity by introducing yourself anytime, anywhere. many torontonians would agree, the city’s most appealing feature is its cultural diversity. the city’s vibrant neighbourhoods that provide a home to over 100 different nationalities who celebrate their culture with ethnic festivals and internationally inspired fashion and foods of the world. You could easily accomplish a well-rounded taste of international cuisine with just one subway token starting out with Indian food in the west end, sneaking a taste of Italian, chinese and greek along the way and finishing with Philippine and Sri Lankan treats in the city’s eastern neighbourhoods. make sure to experience toronto’s cultural side while you’re in town for APWA. the Hot & Spicy Food Festival is on at the Harbourfront centre from August 15-17, and many neighbourhoods celebrate their culture with vibrant street festivals throughout the year.

LOTS TO LEARN

APWA boasts an impressive list of technical and professional development sessions held by APWA professionals for their colleagues. Seminars and workshops covering all areas of public works, including presentations on emerging trends in technology and sustainability, are a key feature of the conference and one of the main reasons why this show is so valuable for its attendees.

“more than 125 education sessions will be offered on a broad array of the most current public works topics. Integrating modes of transportation, sustainability best practices,

traffic and transit, construction management, emergency management, engineering and technology, fleet and facilities, parks and grounds, snow and ice control, and stormwater or flood control, as well as solid waste, roads and bridges and water/wastewater,” said APWA executive Director Peter B. King. LOTS TO SEE

the other reason why this year’s APWA conference is shaping up to be a “can’t miss” event is the trade show component where over 400 exhibitors present the latest in public works equipment and technology on 90,000 sq.ft. of exhibition space. A green Pavilion for the newest eco-friendly products and services, a central Park experience featuring innovative parks/recreation products and a technology Pavilion are also among the main congress attractions.

those who need a break from the indoor adventure that is 2014 APWA, can join one of the many outdoor tours on Workshop Wednesday: visit the enwave Deep Lake Water cooling System, take a trip to the r.c. Harris Water treatment Plant, a national historic civil engineering site that is also known as “the sparkling jewel by the lake”, explore toronto’s unique infrastructure via bike or take a walking tour around Union Station to learn about this mammoth revitalization project right in the city’s core.

no matter how you choose to fill your days during the 2014 APWA congress in toronto, organizers, exhibitors and already registered attendees alike are expecting this one to be the best show to date, the best show in town and the best show in public works.

TRACKLESS MT6: A GENERATION AHEAD OF ALL OTHERS

Page 19: MERG APWA Summer Issue 2014

mergont.com MERG ont 2014 | 19

Forty years ago trackless developed a new concept for north American municipalities: an articulated, four wheel drive tractor with interchangeable front mounted attachments. It was the most powerful, dependable and user-friendly sidewalk tractor in its class with attachments that allow for ‘year-round’ utilization. the trackless municipal tractor was perfect for any municipality and still is today.

the trackless is a true four season machine. the mt6 eliminates equipment sitting idle on the fence. From mowing and sweeping in the summer, removing debris and leaves in the fall, clearing ice and snow in the winter, to agregating in the spring. the mt6 is a work horse that requires less maintenance than other machines and saves you money.

TRACKLESS TRACTOR

Advantages of the Trackless MT6 include:

• Front and rear axles that have limited slip differentials to provide excellent traction.

• The new and improved joystick provides operators with optimal control over all attachments.

• The main powertrain components consist of a 115 HP cummins diesel, Sauer Danfoss hydrostatic system, Dana axles and a twin Disc Pto clutch.

• Excellent access to the engine compartment is achieved by way of four hinged side doors and a hinged top hood which is ideal for daily checks and maintenance.

YEAR-ROUND USE SAVES YOU MONEY

the mt6 and its attachments can and should be used year round. opposed to purchasing and using multiple units to complete multiple applications that you need to accomplish, why not use one unit with a variety of attachments? the trackless 72” rotary mower, trackless 74” Flail mower, and trackless Infrared Asphalt Heater & generator are just a few viable attachment options that are ideal for meeting your ‘year-round’ job application needs.

TRACKLESS 72” ROTARY MOWER

the front mounted trackless 72” rotary mower is designed as a finishing mower for close trimming on both sides with a full width rear discharge. Four large gauge wheels and flexible attaching frame allow accurate cutting on rolling ground.

• Articulated steering that gives the operator precise control in trimming.

• Available with 24” or 48” wings for added flexibility.

• Cutting heights are 1.5” - 4” in 0.5” increments.

• Blades are 3.25” x 2.5” x 0.25” high lift.

TRACKLESS 74” FLAIL MOWER

the trackless 74” Flail mower was designed to cut grass, weeds and light brush - whether on smooth lawn or rough terrain. Unique in its front to rear flexibility, this mower ensures an even cut and no turf damage.

Advantages of the trackless 74” Flail mower include:

• Cutting width of 74” and cutting height of 1” to 4”.

• The thirty-three 2-3/4” blades can be re-sharpened.

• The straight cutting edge of each blade is parallel to the ground to obtain a smooth cut on well-maintained lawns.

• The weight and the shape of the blades allow the mower to cut and mulch light brush, shrubs and weeds.

• Shear pin protection avoids damage to the drive system if the mower blades strike an obstruction.

TRACKLESS INFRARED ASPHALT HEATER & GENERATOR

the trackless Infrared Asphalt Heater and the 45 KW generator makes a quick, cost-effective and permanent asphalt and sidewalk repairer. It was developed to replace traditional propane asphalt heaters with a completely different design concept.

• Eliminate propane tank storage regulations and training/license for changing propane tanks.

• Eliminate an open flame near catch basins or man holes where methane gas or flammable liquids/gases could be present.

• Very little training is required due to the simplicity of operation (the operator lowers the heater, sets the cycle time and hits the cycle start button).

• Heating pan area of 4’ x 6’ with 11 elements.

Your municipality demands the best equipment for snow removal, green space maintenance, and specialty applications; the trackless mt6 always delivers. contact Joe Johnson equipment for more information on how the trackless mt6 can benefit your municipality.

Articulated haulers from Volvo construction equipment have often been copied — but never beaten. And with the new g-Series, the Volvo proven concept is even better, with new features for optimized productivity.

Since their debut in 1966, Volvo articulated haulers have stood as the construction equipment industry’s gold standard — and the leader in off-road productivity.

the new Volvo g-Series articulated haulers carry on that tradition, with new features designed to improve comfort and productivity.

robust and reliable, the new A25g and A30g articulated haulers are suited to a wide variety of applications in quarries, mining and earthmoving.

STEADY AND RELIABLE

the powerful, new turbocharged six-cylinder Volvo engines have been redesigned to adhere to stringent tier 4 Final emissions regulations. the Volvo drivetrain and a unique inline dropbox designed for high ground clearance are purpose-built to ensure perfect harmony and optimized performance. the drivetrain’s unique design delivers high rimpull, lowers fuel consumption and provides reliability in heavy-duty applications.

the proven concept of oil-cooled wet multiple disc brakes on the A35 and A40 models is now being introduced on the A25g and A30g, reducing maintenance costs and increasing uptime, even on muddy or dusty jobsites. the retardation system controls downhill hauling speeds using wheel brakes and the Volvo engine brake.

to keep the g-Series sure-footed in even the most demanding jobsites, automatic traction control (Atc) and unique differential locks are standard. the unique Atc system

automatically switches between drive combinations of 6 x 6 and 6 x 4 to ensure lower fuel consumption or maximum traction when needed. If necessary, all differentials can be 100 percent locked, causing all wheels to rotate at the same speed for maximized traction in slippery conditions.

the maintenance-free rotating hitch that connects the tractor to the trailer enables high ground clearance, boosting accessibility and drivability in tough conditions and maximizing uptime.

the centrally positioned roPS/FoPS-equipped Volvo care cab gives the operator a commanding view of the jobsite, and ergonomically positioned controls are designed for ease of use. An optional air-suspended seat, optional armrests and head restraints, and low noise levels further increase operator comfort and productivity.Without a threshold to cross, the cab can be easily and safely entered through a wide-opening door. And the g-Series climate control system comes with the cleanest air filtration system in the industry for clearer breathing — even on dusty jobsites.

MAINTENANCE MANAGED

the g-Series provides machine owners, operators and technicians with access to a wealth of data that promotes greater uptime — thereby lowering costs and increasing productivity. these machines come fitted as standard with caretrack®, the Volvo

telematics system. Accessed remotely, caretrack provides machine information such as fuel consumption and service reminders that allow improved planning and operation.the machine monitors operation, and the mAtrIS system collects this information, helping to optimize performance and fuel efficiency by tracking activity and identifying areas for improvement. It also allows machine owners to collect the same data as caretrack, even if caretrack is not available in their area. the contronics system continuously monitors fluid levels and relays diagnostic information to a screen in the cab, providing warning messages to alert the operator to problems early on — reducing downtime and promoting operator safety.

Volvo leads the industry in service access, and the g-Series is no exception. g-Series articulated haulers are designed for safe and easy maintenance, with a front grill that swings down and functions as a service platform with anti-slip steps. the engine compartment has a 90-degree tilting hood for easy access to filters and service points. on the new models, the hydraulic tank, after-treatment system, muffler, fuel tank and refueling pipe have all been relocated to more intuitive locations, allowing for even easier maintenance.

Arnprior is known as modest township where the ottawa and madawaska rivers meet. Although geographically small in size, Arnprior provides visitors with a wealth of opportunities.

on June 4th, the town of Arnprior hosted the Association of ontario road Supervisors Annual municipal Public Works tradeshow. It was an event of epic proportions for the 8,000 township residents, as the AorS show is the largest of its kind in ontario.

the two day event provided an opportunity for both public and private sector public works employees to share information and technical developments in materials, services and equipment required to build and maintain municipal roads as well as core infrastructure projects. Approximately 200 exhibitors, mainly suppliers of municipal equipment, exhibited at the show presenting the latest in public works products and services and developed new business relationships.

For the municipal professional, this annual event ranks high on their annual show calendar with this year being no exception: An impressive display of state-of-the-art equipment featuring many live demonstrations was available to the visitors. All in support of a vital service: to construct, maintain and operate the essential infrastructure we all rely upon each day.

governed by a 31 member board of directors and a four member executive, the Association of ontario road Supervisors has grown into one of the most important professional associations in the province.

In 2007, AorS began to formulate a strategic plan to define and accomplish their future objectives called “the road Ahead” followed by a second paper in 2010 with the title “Paving our Way” that defines the associations’ purpose and strategies up until 2014. During that time the association has made strides in educational training with the well-recognized certified road Supervisors (crS) accreditation which is now literally changing the map across the province bringing more professionalism to this vital function within the municipal network.

this year’s AorS tradeshow was once again a huge success in bringing the entire industry together in one place. Yet, it is just another piece of a the well-thought out program with the goal to provide high quality public services through certification, educational programs and interaction amongst AorS’ many members.
