MSA Mentorship is a national educational movement designed for students seeking a deeper understanding of the intersections of education, admissions, and Islam. Mentors are matched with high school students and guide them through the college admission process, standardized testing, and anything they need - like a big sibling - on a manageable schedule. Our mission is to create an American Muslim identity built upon learned excellence starting with our youth. To make this national movement a reality, we need your help!

Our MissionOur aim is to close the feedback loop of education in the Muslim community by championing a connected and inspired network of youth ready to succeed in the classroom and before the eyes of Allah.

We aim to tackle core problems in the Muslim community by creating a desire for success and raising our educational standard.

Students learn and act upon: Essays, AP’s, Interviews, Testing, Recommendations, the CommonApp, Scholarships, Financial Aid and more.

Students learn to balance a passion for life-long learning with consistent practice as they grow into the Muslim leaders of our future.

“...they helped me fully realize my academic talents”

So How Do I Help My Mentee?Be a Big Sibling

Just being someone they can comfortably talk to can go a long way, whether it’s about school, career, family or friends, being Muslim, building their identity, etc. Exchange all contact info and don’t feel odd hanging out or helping your mentee outside of Mentorship - one lunch goes a long way!

1

Be a Resource4You don’t have to know everything about everything. Build a relationship where your mentee feels comfortable asking you for anything and simply point them in the right directions. If you don’t feel comfortable teaching English, show them resources on the Mentorship website, or others, about what they can read, watch, etc. Don’t ever overburden yourself - help as much as YOU can.

Initially, YOU will have to try hard to follow-up with THEM. Most mentees don’t know how fruitful taking initiative can be, so you will more likely than not have to be the one that initiates. It takes a few weeks, but they begin to engage with you far quicker than they would with teachers or parents.

2 Be the Initiator. Gain Their Respect by Giving It.

Assess what your personal goals will be out of Mentorship. Always keep the primary goal of Mentorship in mind: getting productive. Assign work over absences and be FIRM with them on completing it. Don’t guilt trip them, but make it clear you’re not here to waste your time - you’re here to help if they are willing to receive it.

3 Set Goals & Keep Them Productive

Be Confident & Encouraging5You have been in their shoes. You know the admissions process. They won’t heed your advice unless you’re confident in what you know. Really encourage personalized questions, but PRESS them to ask and try to infer - they don’t know what they dont know.

Page 15: Mentor Booklet 2013

6 Teach What You Know... The Way You Wish You Were TaughtSo this is your chance to do it right. Teach them why they should care and teach big picture ideas that will repeat for years to come. Consider your mentee’s learning style and try to DIRECT them rather than feeling like you have to sit and teach them everything - they should do most of the work themselves after you’ve motivated them and shown them the tips and strategies.

7 Maximize Technology UseIt can’t be stressed enough how vital it is to teach your mentee about what is possible with technology - software, websites, Google services, etc. The VAST majority of students are not exposed to any formal curriculum with these and so it is the perfect opportunity to give your mentee a leg-up through simply exposing them.

8 Stay Committed With Your Mentor PartnerThings can get tough around exam time, but the program is designed so that you have a mentor partner who can be your backup if you really can’t make a day. Your commitment is really just to check up on them and push them to meet their goals.

9 Always Keep this Hadith in MindAbu Qatadah, rahimahullah, reported that Allah's Messenger, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said,

The best that a man can leave behind after his death are three things: - Righteous children who make du'a for him - An ongoing sadaqah (charity) whose rewards continue to reach him, and - Knowledge that continues to be implemented after him.

[Ibn Majah, and others. Verified to be sahih by al-Mundhiri and al-Albani]
