American University Men’s BasketballAmerican University Men’s BasketballDoubling-UpJunior Vlad Moldoveanu recorded back-to-back double-doubles at Lehigh and Bucknell. The forward notched 24 points and 11 boards against the Mountain Hawks before scoring 19 points and grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds against the Bison. Moldoveanu is the fi rst Eagle to record a double-double in consecutive games since Jernavis Draughn did so against Bowling Green and East Tennessee State during the 2003-04 season.

Starting 5American has used seven different starting lineups in 22 games this season. Junior Nick Hendra is the lone Eagle to have started all 22 games while sophomore Stephen Lumpkins has started 17 games. Nine different Eagles have made at least one start this year with eight of those student-athletes making their fi rst career start.

Two Seasons in OneAmerican’s year can best be summed up by viewing it in terms of two different seasons, Pre-Moldoveanu and Post-Moldoveanu. In the nine games before Junior Vlad Moldoveanu became eligible for competition, the Eagles posted a 1-8 record while averaging 58.1 ppg and shooting 40.3 percent from the fl oor and 31.2 percent from three. In the 13 games since, American is 6-7 and averaging 64.2 ppg while shooting 43.5 percent from the fi eld and 38.4 percent from three.

Scoring ThreatJunior Vlad Moldoveanu has averaged 20.2 ppg and 6.3 rpg in 13 appearances this season, providing American with a scoring threat from both the inside and outside. Moldoveanu is shooting 55.7 percent from inside the three-point line while also connecting on 42.07 percent of his attempts from three. He has led the Eagles in scoring in 10 of 13 games and fi ve times in rebounding.

Stepping Up His GameAfter a slow start to his season, junior Nick Hendra got back on track and put up big numbers during a 10 game stretch between December 1 and January 13. Hendra averaged 13.8 ppg and 6.6 rpg in that time while shooting 42.9 percent from the fl oor and 40.6 percent from three. During this stretch the junior recorded his second career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds at Florida and at Georgetown, Hendra led the team in points (14), rebounds (9) and assists (4), marking the fi rst time an Eagle has led the team in all three categories since Derrick Mercer (20/7/5) did so against Lafayette in the Patriot League Quarterfi nals last season. In American’s fi rst seven games, Hendra was limited to just 6.3 ppg and 4.4 rpg while shooting 32.0 percent from the fl oor.

Lock Down DefenseAmerican is ranked #2 in the Patriot League for scoring defense, allowing opponents to score just 66.5 ppg, and ranks third in fi eld goal percentage defense at 43.4 percent. The Eagles also rank third in the conference in rebounding at 35.2 rpg. American led the conference in scoring defense last year, giving up a mere 59.1 ppg, and fi nished the season ranked 11th in the NCAA.

Chart TopperSophomore Stephen Lumpkins currently ranks third in the Patriot League in rebounding and second in blocked shots, registering 7.9 rpg and 1.6 bpg. Since joining the conference prior to the 2001-02 season, no American student-athlete has led the Patriot League in either category for an entire season and under Head Coach Jeff Jones, no student-athlete has averaged more than 6.5 rpg. Lumpkins has also registered 11.9 ppg which ranks him 12th in the conference.

American University Men’s BasketballAmerican University Men’s BasketballDial It UpAmerican was on fi re from beyond the arc during a fi ve game stretch December 16 to January 2, shooting 41.4 percent (41-of-99). The Eagles shot a season-high 52.9 percent (9-of-17) at Brown, one game after making a season-best 10 three-pointers at Florida. Junior Vlad Moldoveanu made 16-of-33 attempts during this stretch while classmate Nick Hendra has hit on 14-of-31 attempts. As a team, American made 41 three-pointers in those fi ve games after making just 39 over the course of its fi rst nine games.

Finding Their TouchAmerican connected on 69.2 percent (83-of-120) of its free throw attempts during a seven game stretch between December 1 and January 2 after struggling from the line in the four games previous. The Eagles began the year shooting a conference best 84.3 percent (27-32) from the charity stripe but declined to 57.6 percent (49-85) over their next four games.

A Tale of Two HalvesThe Eagles have held a halftime lead in 11 of 22 games this season but have been outscored 814-751 in the second half and overtime. Last season, American outscored its opponents 989-869 in the fi rst half and 1,049-1,012 in the second half.

Playing With the Big BoysAmerican’s 62-57 victory at DePaul marked the third time under Head Coach Jeff Jones that the Eagles have defeated a BCS conference opponent. In 2007, American earned a 67-59 victory at Maryland and in 2001, the Eagles defeated Florida State on their home court, 77-72. American’s victories over Maryland and Florida State stand as the only victories for a Patriot League school over an ACC opponent in the conference’s history. The Eagles’ win at DePaul was the team’s fi rst against a member of the BIG EAST since its historic victory over then #5 Georgetown at the Capital Centre in 1982.

Quadruple the FunThe Eagles have had four student-athletes score in double-fi gures three times this season, all Ameriacn wins. At Lafayette, junior Vlad Moldoveanu led all scorers with 21 points while sophomore Stephen Lumpkins added 13, junior Nick Hendra tallied 12 and freshman Daniel Munoz notched 10. American also had four double-digit scorers in its 71-64 win over Holy Cross and its 59-53 victory over Howard. Last season, the Eagles had fi ve games in which four student-athletes scored in double-digits and were 5-0 in those contests.

Opening ActJunior Vlad Moldoveanu made his American debut at DePaul where he scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Eagles to a 62-57 victory over the Blue Demons. Moldoveanu connected on 8-of-15 shots from the fl oor and was 5-of-10 from behind the arc.

Moldoveanu saw his fi rst action as an Eagle after transferring to American from George Mason midway through last season. Moldoveanu saw action in 37 games at George Mason where he averaged 2.3 ppg and 2.1 rpg. A member of the Romanian national team, Moldoveanu led his countrymen in scoring and rebounding this summer during the 2009 FIBA EuroBasket Qualifying Tournament, netting 18.3 ppg and 8.5 rpg.

American University Men’s BasketballAmerican University Men’s BasketballWelcome to D.C.Head Coach Jeff Jones has announced the addition of Charles Hinkle to the men’s basketball team. Hinkle, a 6-6 guard from Los Alamitos, Calif., joins the Eagles after transfering from Vanderbilt University.

Hinkle appeared in 10 games as a sophomore for the commodores this season, helping Vanderbilt to an 8-3 record before transferring. As a freshman, he appeared in 25 games and helped the Commordores to a 19-12 overall record and 8-8 mark in SEC play. Before Vanderbilt, Hinkle played one prep season at the Hebron Academy in Maine after playing at Los Alamitos High School.

Youthful ExperienceFreshmen Blake Jolivette and Daniel Munoz have combined to make 21 starts at point guard this season. Under Head Coach Jeff Jones, only two players have been full-time starters in their freshman campaign. Derrick Mercer, the 2009 Patriot League Player of the Year and 2006 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, started 29 of 30 games in his fi rst season while 2004 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Andre Ingram started all 31 games in his fi rst year with the team.

Reaching New Heights12 Eagles have recorded a career-high in points this season including all seven players who returned from last season’s squad. Sophomore Stephen Lumpkins notched a new career-high in each of American’s fi rst four game’s, including a 23-point performance against Florida Atlantic. Junior Nick Hendra matched his previous career-high of 17 points twice before recording a new career-high of 18 at Brown. Junior Vlad Moldoveanu topped everyone, however, with his 37 point performance against Navy.

Youth MovementAfter boasting one of the nation’s most experienced teams last season with seven seniors, the 2009-10 Eagles have undertaken a youth movement and are now listed among the nation’s youngest teams. American’s roster is comprised of 11 underclassmen, the fi fth most in the NCAA, and fi ve upperclassmen, the 19th fewest. The Eagles’ seven returning student-athletes from last season had a combined one career start between them which has resulted in six different Eagles earning their fi rst career start this season.

Follow the LeaderUnder Head Coach Jeff Jones, American has amassed an overall record of 156-136 (.534) and a Patriot League record of 79-40 (.663). The Eagles have won two straight Patriot League Tournament Championships under Coach Jones, four regular season championships and have appearaed in fi ve Patriot League Championship Games. Last season, Coach Jones became American’s all-time leader in wins as he passed the previous record of 142 wins posted by legendary AU coach Staff Cassell.

In nine seasons as head coach of the American University men’s basketball team, Jeff Jones has engineered one of the most remarkable turnarounds in school history. The transformation of the men’s program has culminated over the last two seasons as the Eagles have made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament,

including the school’s fi rst ever trip to the ‘Big Dance.’

The 2008-09 Eagles enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history and capped the year off with a remarkable performance in the NCAA Tournament. American, led by its seven seniors, pushed Final Four participant Villanova to its limits, taking a 10-point lead into halftime and leading by as many as 14 points in the second half. Villanova eventually came back to win the game but not before the Eagles caught the attention of the nation.

American fi nished the 2008-09 season with a 24-8 overall record, matching the program’s record for wins, and a 13-1 mark against the Patriot League. The Eagles led the nation in road wins with 11 and their 59.1 points allowed ranked 11th in the NCAA. For his efforts, Jones was acknowledged as the Patriot League Coach of the Year and the National Association of Basketball Coaches District 13 Coach of the Year. Jones passed American coaching great Stafford Cassell along the way as the program’s all-time winningest coach and fi nished the season with 149 wins at American.

The highlight of an outstanding 2007-08 season was again a great performance in the NCAA Tournament. In the fi rst round matchup played in Birmingham, Ala., America played a tightly contested game against Tennessee. The Eagles trailed by only one point, 50-49, with six minutes to play before the Volunteers pulled away. The NCAA Tournament appearance was the fi rst in program history.

American earned its opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament with a 52-46 win over Colgate in the Patriot League Championship Game. The team went 21-12 on the year, marking the program’s fi rst 20-win season since the 1989-90 season, and won its third Patriot League Regular Season Championship. Along the way American picked up a milestone victory, defeating regional foe and national basketball powerhouse Maryland in College Park, 67-59.

Jones has set the standard for coaching excellence at American and is the program’s all-time leader in wins with a record of 149-121. Jones has also guided American to four Patriot League Regular-Season Championships and fi ve appearances in the Patriot League Tournament Championship Game. He has developed 18 players who have been named All-Patriot League, 20 players who have gone on to play professionally, two players who received Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors and two players, Patrick Doctor (2002) and Derrick Mercer (2008), who earned the Patriot League Player of the Year award.

Such success refl ects his impeccable basketball pedigree: A star point guard who held career and single-season records for assists at the University of Virginia, Jones is the only person to win National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Championships as both a player and coach. Jones is a member of the Apollo High School Hall of Fame in his hometown of Owensboro, Ky., and grew up a student of the game. His father, Bob, coached Kentucky Wesleyan University, leading the team to the 1973 NCAA Division II title.

One of the most respected teachers in the collegiate ranks, Jones left the University of Rhode Island, where he served as an assistant on Jerry DeGregorio’s staff during the 1999-2000 season, to take the helm of American basketball in April 2000, becoming the 17th coach in the school’s history. In just his second season at AU, Jones led the Eagles to the second-best turnaround in NCAA Division I history. The team fi nished with an 18-12 overall record, an 11-game improvement. The 18 victories were the highest win total for the program since 1989-90 and its fi rst winning campaign since 1990-91.

During the 2001-02 season the Eagles captured their fi rst Patriot League Regular Season title, fashioning a 10-4 conference record in the process. The top seed in the league tournament, the Eagles advanced to the championship game only to fall to Holy Cross, 55-52, before then the largest championship crowd in league history and just the second sellout in the history of American’s Bender Arena. The game was also played in front of a national audience on ESPN. Earlier that same season AU gained national

recognition with a 77-72 win at Florida State, becoming the fi rst Patriot League school to ever defeat a member of the renowned Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

During the 2002-03 season, Jones led the Eagles to a victory over cross-town rival George Washington and a regular season win over Holy Cross. The Eagles fi nished second in the regular season and reached the Patriot League Championship Game for a second time.

In 2003-04 Jones guided the Eagles to their second Patriot League Regular Season Championship in three years and led AU to the Patriot League Championship Game for the third straight year. AU fi nished with its third-consecutive winning season for the fi rst time in 13 years and had a six-game winning streak for the fi rst time in 14 years. The Eagles earned an invitation to the Rainbow Classic, where they went 2-1, including a win over NCAA Tournament team East Tennessee State.

The Eagle Has Landed

Jones also led the Eagles to a winning season in 2004-05, as American fi nished with a 16-12 record and an 8-6 mark in the Patriot League, good for third place. With the winning record, Jones had guided AU to above-.500 marks in four straight seasons, a feat which had not been accomplished since the 1974-75 season, when AU completed a string of fi ve straight winning seasons. Jones’s reputation helped the Eagles earn an invitation to the 2004-05 Preseason NIT.In 2006-07 a resurgent AU team achieved a 16-14 record. The winning record marked a period of nearly unprecedented success at AU, as fi ve of the previous six teams had winning seasons, a record accomplished only four times before in the team’s history.

Other notable 2006-07 achievements:

• The Eagles got off to their best start in 17 years with a 7-2 opening mark.

• Jones had a personal highlight with his 100th win at American when the Eagles knocked off Colgate in a thrilling overtime game.

• American went on to the Patriot League semifi nals, where eventual league champ Holy Cross won on a last-second basket.

• Jones joined the exclusive 250-win club.

Other Career Highlights:

• When he became the University of Virginia’s eighth head coach at age 29, Jones was the youngest coach in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference. In eight years at the helm, he compiled a record of 146-104 for a .584 winning percentage. He led Virginia to six postseason appearances (fi ve NCAA, one NIT), one ACC Regular Season Championship, and four 20-win campaigns. Virginia’s win over Virginia Tech during the 1994-95 regular season gave Jones his 100th career victory, making him the second-fastest coach in school history and fi fth-fastest in ACC history to accomplish the feat. He also directed the Cavaliers to fi ve of their top six seasons for fi eld-goal percentage defense.

• Virginia made its fi fth NCAA Tournament appearance in seven seasons under Jones in 1996-97. Finishing that season with an overall mark of 18-13, the Cavaliers fell to Iowa in a West Region fi rst-round game.

• The 1994-95 season saw Jones lead Virginia to a fi nal mark of 25-9. The program advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight and earned a share of its fi rst ACC regular-season crown since 1983. Virginia fi nished that season ranked eighth in the fi nal CNN/USA Today poll and 13th in the fi nal Associated Press media poll. Those were the highest fi nal national rankings by a Virginia team since 1983.

• In 1992-93 Jones became the only coach in conference history to win at least 20 games in each of his fi rst three seasons. He led Virginia to a 21-10 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament East Regional fi nals.

• In 1991-92 Jones’s Cavaliers posted a 20-13 record and went on to win the NIT Championship. As a result, Jones became the fi rst person to win an NIT title as both a player and a coach and is still the only person to accomplish the feat.

• In his fi rst season as head coach at Virginia, Jones led the 1990-91 squad to a 21-12 overall record. He was the only rookie coach in the nation that year to lead his team to the NCAA Tournament.

Before his eight-year run as head coach, Jones served as an full-time assistant coach on Terry Holland’s Virginia staff from 1986 to 1990, a part-time assistant from 1983-85 and a graduate assistant from 1982-83. During his eight seasons as an assistant, Jones was a part of a Cavaliers program which accomplished an overall record of 162-95 (.630), participating in six NCAA Tournaments while advancing to the Final Four in 1984 and the Elite Eight in 1989. Virginia also competed in one NIT during his tenure.

A Big-Time Player

Before beginning his coaching career, Jones made his mark on the national college basketball scene as a player. After starring at Apollo High School in Owensboro, Ky., he went on to become point guard for the University of Virginia from 1978-82. As a four-year starter for the Cavaliers, Jones was known as a leader and prolifi c passer. With Jones directing a potent offense, UVa compiled an overall record of 102-28 (.785). Jones led the Cavaliers to two NCAA Tournaments and two NIT appearances in his four seasons with Virginia advancing to the 1981 NCAA Final Four and the 1980 NIT Championship. He graduated from Virginia in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in psychology.

Jones fi nished his career as Virginia’s all-time assist leader (598) while also setting the single-season mark for assists with 200 during the 1979-80 season. Later, as head coach, he saw both of those records eclipsed by his own player, John Crotty. Jones served as team captain as a senior during the 1981-82 season and played in 129 games during his career. During that time he averaged 6.6 points and 4.6 assists per game while shooting 52.2 percent from the fi eld and 74.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Jones was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2007 Silver Anniversary All-America Team along with Dan Calandrillo (Seton Hall), Eric “Sleepy” Floyd (Georgetown), Pete Metzelaars (Wabash) and Ricky Pierce (Rice). The award is given to former collegiate stars who have gone on to distinguish themselves after their college careers.

Jones and his wife, Danielle, live in Arlington, Va. He is the father of three children, Meghann, Madison Perry, and Jeffrey Robert.
