In his first year back as head coach of the Red-hawks, the team played in the MPSF conference, as well as taking on strong opponents such as Port-land, Gonzaga, UW, and nationally-ranked UC Santa Barbara and New Mexico. Marshall Kosaka earned Second team All-MPSF honors, and Jose Merlo was recognized for honorable mention all-conference.

Six members of the team received MPSF All-Academic Honors, a testa-ment to Fewing’s emphasis on academics along with athletics.

He earned regional coach of the year honors five times and Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) coach of the year recognition three times. He guided the men’s soccer program through the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, posting a 73-24-3 (.745) record in five seasons at the NCAA Division II level.

first ever match at Championship Field “under the lights” vs. No. 3 Washington

on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013.

San Jose State (10/5): The team earned their first ever Western Athletic Confer-ence win with a 4-0 shutout at San Jose State to open their conference sched-

ule. Miguel Gonzalez put the Redhawks ahead, scoring what would be the game-winning winning goal in the 23rd minute

of the match on a long through-ball, beating SJSU keeper Emmanuel Espinosa

high to the far post. Ian Hines-Ike was credited with the assist Just over three minutes later, Brady Ballew scored his second goal of the season in the 26th

minute as Justice Duerksen sent a long pass to Ballew, who dribbled into the

box and sailed the ball past the keeper near the low far post. Leading 2-0 at the half, the Redhawks added to their tally on another pair of goals just 48 seconds apart. Hamza Haddadi scored his first

goal of the season on a long through ball from Kyle Bjornethun to put the Red-

hawks ahead, 3-0, in the 74th minute. In the 75th minute, Gonzalez added his sec-ond goal of the game, his seventh of the season, on a penalty kick to insure the

4-0 Seattle U win. Haddadi and Gonzalez led SU with five shots apiece, three on

frame, as the Redhawks outshot the Spar-tans, 19-16. Hines-Ike and Bjornethun’s

assists marked firsts in each of their collegiate careers. In goal, Jake Feener

made eight saves for the Redhawks, still leading the nation in NCAA Division I

saves, while Espinosa made three saves, allowing all four goals for the Spartans. This is Seattle U’s first shutout of the

season as they have won two of their last three matches, also defeating Florida

Gulf Coast, 3-2, in overtime on Sept. 22.

Gonzaga (9/28): Seattle University men’s soccer battled back with a late goal but

could not even the score as they fell, 2-1, at Gonzaga, in their second to final non-conference competition of the season. The two teams played to a scoreless tie

through halftime despite early scoring op-portunities for the Redhawks. In the 3rd

minute, Hamza Haddadi went one-on-one with the Gonzaga goalie with a saved shot

and seconds later Ian Hines-Ike sailed the ball at the goal once more. Later in the half, Haddadi and Hines-Ike each

added a shot apiece, both of which sailed

high above the goal. Following halftime, Gonzaga broke through in the 55th min-ute as Jakob Granlund scored what would be the winning goal on an assist by Nick Hamer. In the 68th minute, Clark Phillips increased the Bulldog lead, 2-0, tapping the ball into an open right side net. Lars

Ludwigs was credited with the assist. In the 78th minute, Michael Roberts

narrowed the score, 2-1 dribbling down the left side and taking the shot from 12 yards out towards the left post. Renato Bandeira earned the assist on Robert’s third goal of the season. Despite the

late goal, Seattle U fell 2-1 at Gonzaga. Haddadi led SU with three shots, two on goal while Hines-Ike added two goals for the Redhawks. Overall, the Zags outshot

the Redhawks, 26-8. In goal, Jake Feener made nine saves in the complete game

for Seattle U while Ryan Caballero made three saves in the win for Gonzaga.

Florida Gulf Coast (9/22): Seattle Univer-sity men’s soccer found themselves down early, but fought back and earned their first win of the season in overtime, 3-2, versus Florida Gulf Coast. In the 35th

minute, Florida Gulf Coast took the lead, as Xavier Silva scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Rodrigo Sara-via who took the free kick. A little over two minutes later, in the 37th minute,

Michael Roberts equalized the score with a kick just to the left of the goalkeeper, sailing the ball into the back of the net. In the 41st minute, FGCU regained the lead as Silva passed the ball to Henry

Penagos on the left side of the goal, who then netted the ball. As the Redhawks trailed at half, in the 50th minute, Jus-tice Duerksen scored his first collegiate

goal on an assist by Bobby Segal. Neither team was able to add to their tally, as the Redhawks recorded their fourth overtime game in eight games thus far in 2013. With no shots taken in the overtime pe-riod, in the 100th minute, Brady Ballew scored his first goal of the season, the

golden goal, assisted by Hamza Haddadi as the Redhawks earned their first win of the season. Ian Hines-Ike recorded a team-high four shots for Seattle U, as

Miguel Gonzalez added three. As a team, shots were nearly even, with Florida Gulf

Coast narrowly outshooting Seattle U, 18-16. In goal, Jake Feener recorded four

saves in the complete game win while Nathan Ingham made five saves in goal

for FGCU. Cameron Rohani and Duerksen made their first collegiate starts, as Segal made his first appearance of the season.

Georgia State (9/20): In their regular season home opener, Seattle University men’s soccer trailed early and, despite a

goal in the second half, the Redhawks fell 2-1 to Georgia State. In the 4th minute, Georgia State’s Jamal Keene scored what would be the winning goal, kicking the

ball directly over SU goalie Jake Feener’s head. Miguel Gonzalez added a shot for

the Redhawks but they trailed at the half, 1-0. In the 73rd minute, GSU increased their lead, as Eddie Wilding kicked the ball in from about 25 yards out as they took the 2-0 lead. Just over a minute

later, Gonzalez narrowed the score, drib-bling down the left side and kicking the ball into the left side of the net past the goalkeeper. SU, however, could not add to their total as they were defeated, 2-1,

in their regular season home opener. Justice Duerksen and Sarkis Shaginian made their first collegiate appearances for Seattle U. As a team, Georgia State outshot SU, 12-9. In goal, Feener made four saves while CJ Cochran made two

for Georgia State. Prior to the match, the Seattle U Athletics Department honored head coach Pete Fewing, who is in his

20th season overall as head coach of the Redhawks.

first goal of the season for UP, assisted by Eddie Sanchez as he took one shot and sunk the ball into the right side of the goal from about 22 yards out. Over the next 10 minutes, the Redhawks outshot the Pilots, 7-4, as Miguel Gonzalez broke

Near the end of over-time, in the 100th minute, Anderson received the pass from Will Seymore, heading the ball into the goal to give

Oregon State the 2-1 win. Feener repre-sented Seattle U in goal for the com-

plete game, recording eight saves. Matt Bersano made three saves in goal for the Beavers. Gonzalez led the Redhawks with seven shots, four on goal. Overall, Oregon

State outshot Seattle U, 19-14.

Sacramento State (9/8): With three prior shots in the first half, in the 33rd min-ute, Miguel Gonzalez launched the ball from just past midfield over Sacramento State goalkeeper Cesar Castillo’s head to put the Redhawks ahead, 1-0. Just

after halftime, in the 47th minute, Gabe Silveira tied the game, 1-1, with a shot from 10 yards out into the bottom right corner. Seattle U had their best opportu-nity to take the lead in the 52nd minute, as back-to-back-to-back shots by Darrell Hannah, Hamza Haddadi and Jeff Rose

resulted in a save and two blocks, re-spectively. Neither side was able to score further in regulation, sending the game into overtime, the second such contest

for the Redhawks this season. Only three Sacramento State shots resulted from the first overtime, with a purely defen-

sive game in the second overtime, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie, the Redhawks’

first draw this season. Jake Feener represented Seattle U in goal for all

110 minutes, making eight saves, while Castillo made four saves in goal for the

Hornets. Gonzalez led Seattle U with four shots, three on goal, while Chimdum Mez led Sacramento State with six shots, two on goal. The Hornets outshot the Red-hawks, 20-11, in the match. Gonzalez and Feener were named to the Copa De Causeway All-Tournament team, the two-site tournament hosted by UC Davis and

Sacramento State over the weekend.

UC Davis (9/6): In the 8th minute, Nick Grigoriev tapped the ball from the right flank to the top of the penalty box where

Matt Sheldon was waiting to head in the ball for a 1-0 UC Davis lead. Miguel Gonzalez added a shot 16 seconds later, saved by Aggie goalkeeper Omar Zeenni. Ian Hines-Ike added another shot for the Redhawks, which went over the goal, but the score remained 1-0 at the halftime

break. The Aggies opened up the second half with back-to-back shots, both sailing

over the goal, while Hamza Haddadi, Jonathan Massimino, and Austin Sweeney added shots later in the half for SU, but UC Davis came away with the 1-0 win. Five different Redhawks led the team

with one shot apiece, while Alex Aguiar led the Aggies with four shots as UC

Davis outshot Seattle U, 21-5. In goal, Jake Feener made four saves for Seattle U while Zeenni made two saves for UC

Davis.

Delaware (9/1): The Redhawks took the early lead, 1-0, in the third minute as Jeff Rose took a shot seven yards out

from center, sinking the ball into the left side for his first career goal. The Blue

Hens tied the game in the 12th minute as Guillermo Delgado scored his third goal of the season, assisted by Roberto Gimenez and Jaime Martinez, from the top left corner. Taking their first lead, Delaware’s Prince Nartey scored on a

penalty kick in the 21st minute to lead,

2-1, which remained the halftime score. Seattle U evened the score at two in the

69th minute as Michael Roberts (Is-saquah, Wash.) headed the ball into the

net off a corner kick. The game going into overtime, in the 99th minute, Delaware’s Evan Reed headed the ball into the net

off a corner kick by Kyle Nuel, the golden goal, as the Blue Hens took the 3-2 vic-tory. Kyle Bjornethun, Shane Mahvi, Ian Hines-Ike, Rose, Jonathan Massimino,

Brandon Marquez, Jordan Bingham, and Darrell Hannah all saw their first colle-

giate action over the weekend.

UMBC (8/30): Early in the match, in the 10th minute, Pete Caringi drove in his

first goal of the season for the Retrievers to give UMBC the early lead, 1-0. The

goal, assisted by Stephen Ho and Gaeton Caltabiano resulted from a long pass from Caltabiano to Ho, who followed it up with a step and leading pass to Caringi. The Retrievers would add to their score, 2-0, at the 24 minute mark as Caringi scored again, this time assisted on a dish by Ka-deem Dacres. In the 38th minute, Miguel Gonzalez would add a goal for the Red-

hawks to narrow the score, 2-1, which re-mained the score going into the halftime break. Near the end of the match, in the 84th minute, Mamadou Kansaye scored an insurance goal, assisted by Dacres to insure the UMBC win, 3-1. The match was also part of the Springhill Suites

Arundel Mills BWI Kick-Off Classic and Gonzalez and Jeff Rose (Carmichael,

Calif.) represented the Redhawks on the All-Tournament team.
