Last Game UTRGV Falls to New Orleans in CBI March 14, 2018 at Lakefront Arena – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to the University of New Orleans (UNO) 77-74 in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). Junior Terry Winn led UTRGV (15-18) 14 points and seven rebounds. Senior Mike Hoffman scored 13 points while going 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Senior Nick Dixon scored 11 points with six rebounds and five assists. Freshman Greg Bowie finished with 10 points. Dixon finishes his career tied for 10th in program history with 1,282 points, matching recently inducted Hall of Famer Mire Chatman (2000-02). Dixon scored 670 points this season, the seventh-highest single-season total in program history, while hitting a program record 222 free throws. Lamont Berzat led UNO (16-16) with 21 points, 10 assists and four steals. Damion Rosser scored 14 points with five assists. Ezekiel Charles scored 12 points. UNO scored the first six points of the game en route to a 14-6 lead. UNO still led by eight at 17-9, when a jumper and a layup by junior Lew Stallworth sparked a 14-4 run to put UTRGV up 23-21. UTRGV hit all five of its shots during the run and hit 10 of its final 12 shots during the half while going up by as much as three and ending the period tied at 37. Berzat hit a pair of three-pointers as UNO opened the second half on a 13-6 run to go up 50-43. UTRGV still trailed by seven with 5:47 remaining before scoring the next six points to pull within 66-65. Previous Games Rally Falls Short as UTRGV Falls to Seattle U in WAC Tournament Quarterfinals March 8, 2018 at Orleans Arena – Down 18 early in the second half, the fifth-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team rallied back to within four before falling to fourth-seeded Seattle U 77-60 in the quarterfinals. Senior Nick Dixon led UTRGV (15-17) with 24 points, three rebounds and three steals. Junior Lew Stallworth scored eight points. Richaud Gittens led Seattle U (20-12) with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Hearlihy scored 16 points with seven rebounds. Aaron Menzies scored 12 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Matej Kavas also scored 12 points. Jordan Hill scored 11 points with eight rebounds. Seattle U pushed its lead to 18 at 51-33 early in the second half. A Stallworth jumper and four Dixon free throws sparked a 16-2 run to bring UTRGV within 53-49. UTRGV was still within four at 55-51 on a Stallworth layup with 7:19 left, but Seattle U scored the next eight points as part of a 14-4 run to push the game out of reach. Kavas hit a pair of early three-pointers as Seattle U scored the first nine points en route to a 16-4 lead. UTRGV still trailed by 11 with eight minutes left when junior Terry Winn and freshman Greg Bowie made jumpers and Dixon hit four free throws to power an 8-3 run that brought UTRGV within 26-20 at the 5:47 mark. Senior Nick Dixon led UTRGV (15-16, 6-8 WAC) with 14 points and two steals. Junior Lew Stallworth scored 11 points. Freshman Javon Levi scored 10 points with three assists and two steals. Jemerrio Jones led NM State (25-5, 12-2 WAC) with 18 points, 13 rebounds and three steals. Zach Lofton scored 17 points with 10 rebounds. Johnathon Wilkins scored 16 points with four assists. AJ Harris scored 15 points with seven assists. Levi made a layup and freshman Greg Bowie sunk a pair of free throws as UTRGV jumped out to a 4-2 lead. Jones, Wilkins and Lofton all made layups to put NM State up 8-4. Junior Terry Winn twice made jumpers and junior Johnny Crnogorac hit a jumper of his own to bring UTRV within two, including at 12-10 before NM State went on a 12-2 run to go up 24-12. OU had four players score in double figures, including three coming off the bench, with forward Taj Gray leading the way by notching a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Lawrence McKenzie added 18 points, draining a game-high four three-pointers, while Terrell Everett and Longar Longar added 12 and 11 points, respectively. After finishing the first half 16-29 (55.2 percent), OU went into intermission with a 48-26 lead. UTPA shot 40.9 percent (9-22) during the first set of 20 minutes, and the perimeter game was stifled by OU’s defense as UTPA connected on only one trey in that frame. For the game, UTPA made a season-low three treys and have drained only seven three-pointers over the past two contests. UTPA committed 23 turnovers in the game compared to six for OU, and were out-rebounded for the second time this season by a 40-33 margin. Oklahoma's offense dished out 18 assists while the Broncs were held to a season-low six assists. Senior Chris Fagan led UTPA’s offense with 14 points and three rebounds while Eric Montalvo added 13 points. Freshman Thomas Sanders scored a career-high 10 points in 16 minutes of action. Alvaidas Gedminas grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

2017-18 Notes • UTRGV made its first postseason appearance since the 1981

NIT, second at the NCAA Division I level and ninth ever by advancing to the CBI for the first time.

• UTRGV experienced a 50 percent increase in wins, going from 10 to 15 in head coach Lew Hill’s second season.

• UTRGV had an NCAA-high seven players reach double-figures in

scoring in a 96-75 win over Our Lady of the Lake (1/2), a feat the program hadn’t accomplished since Dec. 4, 1993.

• Nick Dixon earned NABC All-District Second Team honors as

voted on by member coaches of the NABC in NCAA Division I. Dixon led the WAC in scoring (20.6), and ranked second in steals per game (1.4) and seventh in free throw shooting (.793). Nationally, Dixon ranked third in the NCAA in free throw makes (219) and attempts (276), 31st in total points (659), 34th in scoring (20.6), 106th in field goal attempts (432), 127th in field goals made (193), 174th in total steals (46), 228th in free throw shooting (.793), and 241st in field goal shooting (.447). He also earned All-WAC First Team honors as voted on by the head coaches based on statistics compiled during WAC play. Dixon averaged 20.9 points on .419 shooting, including .343 from behind the arc, plus .784 from the foul line, 4.5 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.3 steals in 14 WAC games. During WAC play, Dixon lead the WAC in scoring (20.9) and ranked tied for seventh in steals per game (1.3), tied for ninth in three-pointers made (23), tied for 10th in offensive rebounding (1.6), and tied for 15th in rebounding (4.5).

Lew Hill Head Coach Date Named: 3/31/16 • Head Coaching Experience: Second Season • Alma Mater: Wichita State University

UTRGV Athletics hired Lew Hill, who spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma, as the new UTRGV men’s basketball head coach on March 31, 2016. 2017-18: In second season at the helm, coached UTRGV to a 50 percent increase in victories (10-to-15) and a 200 percent increase in WAC victories (2-to-6) … The six WAC wins are the most the program has ever had and the highest total number of conference victories since 1995-96 (Sun Belt) … UTRGV finished fifth in the WAC, its best finish in five years of WAC play … UTRGV went on to earn its first postseason appearance since 1981, taking part in the College Basketball Invitational … UTRGV finished regular season non-conference play with a winning record (9-8) for the first time since 2007-08 (18-13). This is the first time UTRGV has finished regular season non-conference play with a winning record while part of a conference since 1993-94 (6-2) … UTRGV swept CSU Bakersfield, marking first time program has ever swept the defending WAC Champions … Coached Nick Dixon to NABC All-District Second team and All-WAC First Team honors. Dixon finished his career tied for 10th in program history with 1,282 points. 2016-17: In first season at the helm, coached UTRGV to the Emerald Coast Classic Pool B Championship, and a stretch that saw UTRGV win seven out of eight, starting with wins over Texas State, North Florida and Lamar, and ending with a WAC-opening win over Chicago State … Coached defensive unit that ranked 11th in the NCAA and second in the WAC in turnovers forced per game (16.38) and 34th in the NCAA and second in the WAC in steals per game (7.7) … Helped Nick Dixon earn All-WAC Second All-Newcomer Team honors … Dixon and Antonio Green were one of only six duos in the NCAA to average at least 16.7

points per game, ranking fifth with a combined average of 17.8 points per game. Career: Oklahoma went 29-8 (.784) in 2015-16 and reached the Final Four. Oklahoma compiled a 111-57 (.661) record during Hill’s five-year tenure, including four-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. The 2015-16 season was Hill’s 12th working with former Pan American University head coach Lon Kruger, after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach at UNLV from 2004-11. During that time, UNLV went 161-71 (.694) while making six postseason appearances, including four NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to his time at UNLV, Hill was an assistant coach at Texas A&M for five seasons (1998-2003) and associate head coach (2003-04) for one. He previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach at East Carolina (1994-98) and two years as an assistant at Southeast Missouri State (1992-94). Hill began his coaching career at Wichita East High School as the head coach of the JV boys’ basketball team and an assistant coach with the varsity team in 1989-90. He followed that up by moving into the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at South Alabama (1990-92). Hill was an All-American point guard for San Jacinto Junior College in 1983-84, helping the Ravens to the national championship. He went on to earn All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades in 1987-88 as a senior at Wichita State while helped the Shockers to a 20-10 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance. The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native was an all-state performer at Mount Vernon High School. After graduating from Wichita State in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, he played professionally in Germany for one season before beginning his coaching career. Hill and his wife, Renee, have two children: a son, Lewis Jr., and a daughter, Elle. Hill also has three other daughters, Sierra, Erica and Asya.
