Men’s Soccer 31.19

AMERICA EASTMaine soccer teams, beginning in 1988, found a new conference home with the establishment of the North Atlantic Conference, later re-named America East. Charter members were Boston andNortheastern Universities and the Universities of Hartford, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.The University of Delaware and Drexel University became members in 1991. Hofstra and TowsonUniversities became members in 1995.

Drexel, Hofstra, and Towson Universities and the University of Delaware resigned following the 2001season. The Universities of Albany and Stony Brook became members in 2001. Binghamton Universitybecame a member in 2002. The University of Maryland at Baltimore County became a member in 2003.

Northeastern University resigned following the 2004 season.

YANKEE CONFERENCE Maine teams competed in the Yankee Conference for 15 seasons between 1965 and 1979. Charter members were the Universities of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island,and Vermont. Boston University joined the conference in 1972. 1967 BLACK BEARS

UM grad Bill Livesey served as Maine’s soccer coach for the ’66 and ’67 seasons before going on to an outstanding career with the New York Yankee’sorganization. 1988 BLACK BEAR BOSSES

Head Coach Jim Dyer, center, headed a most able coachingstaff in 1988. He is flanked by Jeff Spring (left) and Scott Atherley (right). Spring, a goalie, is the only soccerplayer in UM history to have his number retired. Maine posteda winning record in all four of his varsity seasons (1983–87)and he established an all-time UM record of 27 shutouts during that span. Atherley, also an outstanding player forMaine between 1984 and 1987, succeeded Dyer as headcoach in 1993 and became coach of the UM women’s team in 2000.
