Season PreviewThe Varsity Blues return to the field with confidence and determination in 2010. With 12 returning players, Toronto is set to battle with Ontarios finest before meeting the top teams in the country when they host the 2010 CIS mens soccer championships, November 11-14, at Varsity Centre.

We are very excited for the upcoming season, said head coach Anthony Capotosto. We are fortunate to have such a special opportunity to compete for a national title on our home field, which is something that does not happen very often. We have a great group of student-athletes that are working hard to prepare for a long and successful season and our team outcome goals remain the same every year - OUA and CIS gold.

U of T ended their 2009 campaign in first place in the East division with an 11-1-2 record and went on to earn the OUA silver medal at home. At the national championship in Langley, B.C., the Blues finished just off the podium, losing in pen-alty kicks to the eventual bronze medalist and host Trinity Western Spartans.

Leading the way once again is team co-captain and 2009 CIS all-Canadian Yannis Gianniotis. The fourth-year defender scored four goals in 14 games and helped Toronto to the fewest goals against (6) in Canada last season.

Fellow co-captains Darrah McGee and Alexander Raphael will be called upon to lead the midfield and strikers, respec-tively. A native of Donegral, Ireland, McGee played an integral role in Torontos success last season and has third-year Geoffrey Borgmann and incoming midfielder Ezequiel Lubocki to help lead the Blues transition game.

OUA all-star strikers Raphael and Nordo Gooden scored seven and eight goals, respectively, accounting for half of To-rontos offensive output in 2009. They will be joined by rookie Mario Kovacevic who has good technical ability and adds size and skill to the Blues attack.

Goalkeeper John Smits will assume the role of starting goalkeeper for the second consecutive season. Smits amassed a CIS-high 11 shutouts in regular season action last year.

2009 Year in ReviewWith an impressive 11-1-2 record, the Varsity Blues mens soccer team finished the regular season atop the OUA East division.

The Blues got off to a slow start in 09, going 0-2 at the Old Four tournament, hosted this year by the University of Western Ontario and starting season 1-1-1. However, Toronto would go on an impressive 11-game undefeated streak to climb their way to the top of the standings and earn a bye into the OUA quarter-final round.

Fourth-year striker Nordo Gooden led the OUA with eight goals in 14 games. Goalkeeper John Smits amassed a CIS-high 11 shutouts in regular season action.

After a dominating 4-0 quarter-final win over the Laurentian Voyageurs, the Blues topped the CIS poll at No. 1 and were set to host the 2009 OUA championship at Varsity Centre. The calibre of play was high and teams were equally matched as all four games on the weekend were decided by penalty kicks.

In an exciting semi-final match up with the Western Mustangs, Toronto came away with a 3-2 victory (5-4 in penalty kicks) to earn a spot in the OUA gold-medal match and a trip to Langley, B.C. for the 2009 CIS championship tournament.

Unfortunately, the Blues have to settle for silver as they fell 1-0 (5-4 in penalty kicks) to in the championship game.

Six members of the team were named league all-stars. Team captain Yannis Gianniotis, Alex Raphael and Dylan Bams were named OUA first team all-stars, while Gooden, Smits and Mario Nallira earned second team honours.

The Blues opened the CIS championship tournament with a 2-1 victory over the Victoria Vikes, before dropping a heartbreaking 3-0 decision to the Laval Rouge et Or in the semifinals.

In tough against the host Trinity Western Spartans, Toronto took the defending silver medalists to overtime, only to fall 2-1 (4-2 in penalty kicks) to place fourth.

Gianniotis was named a first team all-Canadian.

    Record ManualVARSITY BLUES HISTORY

The University of Toronto mens soccer program continues to be one of the best in the nation and upholds a tradition of success and accomplishment that stretches back 130 years. Organized soccer was first introduced to the U of T campus in 1876, when the University of Toronto Football Club abandoned a traditional local set of football rules in favour of the then-novel Association game. The current team was established in 1879, making it one of the oldest in North America. The Blues dominated the Ontario-Quebec interuniversity league for much of the 20th century, capturing 43 league titles between 1904 and 1968, including 17 championships in the 1950s and 60s. This tradition of excellence continues to the present day. For the past two decades, the U of T mens soccer team has been consistently ranked in the top 10 in the country and has reached the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships nine times since 1986, bringing home the national title in 1988 and a silver medal in 2005. The Blues were OUA silver medalists from 2004-06 and 2009 and last captured the OUA title in 2002. Varsity Blues soccer also regularly attracts some of the top high school student-athletes from Ontario and across the country. In 1989 the entire Varsity Blues squad represented Canada at the World University Championship and captured the silver medal. Since 1979, 37 Varsity Blues have been named CIS all-Canadians, including Mark Purdy, Peter Sarantopoulos, Joe Demiglio and Mike Bialy.

    VARSITY BLUES 1988 CIAU CHAMPIONS

In 1988, the Varsity Blues mens soccer team claimed the nations top prize, a CIAU championship, for the first time in U of T history.

The Blues wrapped up the regular season schedule with a near perfect 15-1-1 record, scoring 42 goals and allowing just 12. In the post-season, U of T opened their title run with a 1-0 penalty kick victory over Carleton before slipping past Queens 4-2 in the provincial semifinals and shutting out Western 2-0 to claim the OUAA crown. At the national championship, the Blues defeated number-one ranked Alberta (2-1) with goals from Pat Cubellis and George Argyropoulos. And in the final, Cubellis notched the games only marker in a 1-0 victory over McGill. The team then capped off their storybook season at the World University Soccer Championship in Arizona, where they represented Canada and earned a silver medal.

The success of this squad, which was led by 1988 OUAA coach of the year Jim Lefkos, can be attributed to their tremendous depth, determination and incredible team chemistry. Seven Varsity Blues were named OUAA all-stars, with Cubellis and Coz Zambazis also garnering all-Canadian honours.

The 1988-89 championship team included Terry Apostolou (Manager), George Argyropoulos, Chris Collie, David Collie, Pat Cubellis, John Diniz, Patrick Fancott, John Fitzgerald, Guido Geisler, Domenic Ientile, Alan Kennedy, Ben Kwak, Tom Lazarou, Rod MacGregor, (therapist) Dino Mastrogianis, William Murray, Robert Pacas, Bill Papaconstantinou, Nino Perrotta, Peter Sarantopoulos, Tony Tata, Tom Tsilfidis, Mark Varkul, Coz Zambazis and head coach Jim Lefkos.
