SEASON PREVIEW

V A R S I T Y B L U E S 8

Head coach John Barrett is excited for this year’s squad, which boasts all but one player returning from last season.

“We’ve got a solid core entering their second and third years,” said Varsity Blues head coach John Barrett. “With at least one season under their belts, we don’t have to worry about the transition into OUA volleyball anymore. We can focus on our game, climbing the standings and a post-season berth.”

The Blues will look to fi fth-year right side Mitchell Woodside to steer the ship in 2012-13. The Clyde River, P.E.I., native led the team with 3.19 kills per set last season. Woodside, along with fourth-year veteran middle Jay Tremonti, will be relied on to provide veteran leadership to this year’s squad.

Michael Denton also returns as the team’s starting libero and team captain. The Scarborough, Ont., native led the team with 2.65 digs per set in 2011-12.

Left side hitters Jake Dysselhof, Jonathan Adomait and Matthew Vares enter their third seasons with the team. Dysselhof ranked second on the team with 2.55 kills per set, while also leading U of T with 16 serving aces.

Adomait ranked third on the team with 2.41 kills per set and also averaged 1.65 digs per set. Vares saw action in every match, recording 2.6 points per game, and will be relied on to step into a leadership role this season.

2012 OUA all-rookie team members Steven Khuu and Trevor Grant are sure to bolster the squad this year. Khuu led the team and ranked sixth in the OUA with 9.04 assists per set, while Grant ranked second on the team with 41 blocks.

Fellow middle blocker Nathanial Virgo has improved over the off season and will provide solid size at the net.

The Varsity Blues won eight OUA championship titles from 1995-04 and a total of 16 OUA banners since 1966. The men’s volleyball program at the University of Toronto has a rich history that includes capturing the fi rst two OUA men’s volleyball championships in 1966 and 1967. In fact, today the OUA men’s volleyball champion-ship team receives the Forsyth Memorial Trophy, which was fi rst awarded in 1968 and is named after U of T alumnus, the late Jim Forsyth was killed in an automobile ac-cident in February of 1968.

The Varsity Blues volleyball program rou-tinely attracts some of the best high school student-athletes. 31 Blues players have been selected as OUA all-stars a total of 75 times since 1979. 11 of those athletes have been named to the CIS all-Canadian team on 22 occasions since 1983. Former Varsity Blues players have also represented Canada internationally both indoors and on the beach. 1992 CIS Player of the Year Marc Dunn was a member of Canada’s national indoor team.
