BRETT VINCENTHEAD COACH

The team also defeated Campbell University in exhibition play which was the first time that the Chowan men’s basketball team ever topped a NCAA DI opponent in regular season or exhibition play.

Vincent led the Hawks to a 7-20 overall record in in the 2012-2013 season, and guided Kortez Smith to earn the CIAA Rookie of the Year award, with Quinton McDuffie being named to the CIAA All-Tournament Team.

When Vincent came to Chowan in August of 2012, he inherited a team that had won five games the previous year. The program faced multiple challenges athletically, academically and with its perception in the community. Vincent helped to build a solid foundation and change the culture of the program. The program now has a 100% graduation rate for its seniors and the team earned the highest GPA among CIAA men's basketball teams for the 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 seasons. Vincent has also had two past program individuals that played under him go on to sign professional contracts overseas. Vincent, a native of Shinnston, West Virginia, came to Chowan after spending eight seasons with the Fairmont State Uni-versity men's basketball program. He served six seasons as an assistant coach, two as the associate head coach, and spent the 2011-2012 season as the interim head coach. “First and foremost we want to recruit good people. Then good student-athletes. Then the rest will fall into place,” said Vincent. “We want to develop winners on and off the court and in life.” During the 2010-2011 season as an associate head coach, Vincent helped the Falcons to a winning season as the Falcons posted a 17-10 record. He helped in the development of then-guards Isaac Thornton, a first team All-WVIAC pick and Steve Custis, a 1,000-point career scorer.

During the 2008-2009 season, Vincent helped the Falcons earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament as FSU posted a 22-8 record, the first 20 win season the Fighting Falcons. He also helped grow Custis into a first team All-WVIAC pick and then-freshman guard Thornton into the WVIAC Freshman of the Year.

2014-2015 HIGHLIGHTS

Page 6: Chowan Men's Basketball Preseason Guide- 2015-16

In 2008-2009 he helped the Falcons to their first 20 win season since 2001 and coached All-American guard Thad McFadden and WVIAC All-Freshman pick Custis. Four seasons ago, the Falcons posted a 19-10 record and Vincent was instrumental in the guidance of the prolific back court of two-time All-WVIAC second team pick Ronnie Means and first team all-conference selection Thad McFadden. Means set school records for assists while McFadden made more threes than anyone in school history in just two seasons.

Prior to his eight-year stint at Fairmont State he spent three seasons as head coach at Lewis County High School. The team's total wins under Vincent were a 30-win improvement over the three seasons prior to his arrival at Lewis Coun-ty. In 2003, he led Lewis County to the section championship and an appearance in the regional final. Lewis County posted its first winning season in 17 years and received its first top-10 state ranking in 19 years that season. The Min-utemen also picked up postseason wins in each of his three seasons. Prior to his stint at Lewis County High School, Vincent compiled a 92-49 record as the head basketball coach at Alder-son-Broaddus from 1996-2001. He took over in 1996 at the age of 28, and as one of the youngest head coaches in the NCAA, promptly led A-B to 20 wins in three of his five seasons. The Battlers led the WVIAC in points per game in 1998, and were fifth in the country in defensive field goal percentage in 2000. His teams advanced to the WVIAC tourna-ment semifinals twice and to the championship game once. Vincent played college basketball at three Division I schools: West Virginia University, Robert Morris and Marshall Uni-versity, and was a starter at all three schools. As a freshman at WVU, the Mountaineers advanced to the NCAA Tour-nament. As a sophomore, West Virginia was 8-1 with him starting at point guard and he was named to the All-East Academic team as the Mountaineers advanced to the NIT. Vincent then moved on to Robert Morris where he spent two seasons with the Colonials, the first of which he sat out due to transfer rules. As a junior, Vincent helped lead RMU to its second straight Northeast Conference title and NCAA Tournament where the Colonials took on Kansas. As a senior at Marshall, he led the team in assists and still is the school's leader in career 3-point field goal percentage (43 percent).

He received his bachelor's degree in sports management in 1991 from Marshall University in Huntington, West VA and his master's degree in education from Salem-Teikyo University in 2000.

Vincent graduated from South Harrison High School where he led the state and was ranked fourth nationally averag-ing 35.9 points per game as a senior. He led the Hawks to an undefeated regular season in 1986, the only one in West Virginia. He was named the Morgantown Touchdown Club West Virginia Player of the Year in the 1986 season, and was a three-time all-state selection and captained the Class AA All-State team as a senior.

Brett Vincent is married to the former Andrea Gum. The two have one son, Cole.

CHARLES RHODESASSISTANT COACH

Charles Rhodes enters his first season as part of the Chowan University men’s basketball coaching staff. Rhodes returns to his alma mater to serve as As-sistant Men’s Basketball Coach. The Chapel Hill, North Carolina native was a standout student-athlete for the Chowan Blue and White.

Head Coach Men’s Basketball Coach Brett Vincent noted, “We are glad to have Charles back on campus as an assistant coach. He had a wonderful playing career here. He brings college and professional playing experience to our program along with the necessary skillset to coach at this level. Charles relates well to our student-athletes and he is familiar with the Chowan community.”

Rhodes added, “I’m very excited and thankful to be back at Chowan. I gave the basketball progam everything I could as a player and I’m going to do the same as a coach. Coach Vincent has been doing an outstanding job here and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

After a four year career with the Hawks, Rhodes graduated as Chowan’s sixth all-time leading scorer with 1,082 career points and posted a school record 48.7% three-point percentage during the 2008-2009 season. He is one of ten point career scorers as part of Chowan’s four-year classification era.

Over the course of his career, Rhodes was named to the NCCAA National All-Tournament team (2008) and CIAA All-Tournament Team (2011). MEN’S BASKETBALLSEASON PREVIEW

The Hawks enter the 2015-2016 season in their fourth year under the direction of Brett Vincent and their seventh season in the CIAA. The Hawks posted a 15-13 overall record one year ago which was the team’s first winning season since 2009-2010 when Chowan posted an 18-10 mark. The 2014-15 squad also defeated Winston-Salem State University for the first time in program history while executing sweeps over crosstown rival Elizabeth City State University and Virginia Union University. The men’s basketball team lost three players to graduation; Kyree Bethel, Tiron Brown and Mark Anthony Buright. Bethel graduated as Chowan’s fourth all-time point scorer with 1,326 career points for the Blue and White. He is one of ten 1,000 point career scorers as part of Chowan’s four-year classification era. Head Coach Brett Vincent enters his fourth season patrolling the Hawks’ bench. He noted, “Kyree Bethel will be tough to replace but we feel like we have some very young guards that are capable of making shots for us this year. We will look to our seniors Kortez Smith and Josh Mellette to provide leadership for our younger studuent-athletes. Our team has made huge strides in three seasons and we look forward to continued success in the CIAA.” Kortez Smith and Josh Mellette return to the hardcourt for their final season with the Chowan Blue and White. Smith has been a consistent performer for the Hawks after beginning his career with the squad as the 2012-13 CIAA Rookie of the Year. The Waldorf, Maryland native averaged 9.3 points per game while tallying 34 steals last season. Mellette, hailing from Sanford, North Carolina, played an integral role in the team’s success last season with 9.5 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per outing and a team-high 40 blocks. Chowan welcomes six newcomers to their team this year with two freshman, two sophomores and two juniors. The Hawks will count on Marco Haskins, native of Fredericksburg, Virginia and graduate of Colonial Forge High School along with Jeremy Smith, a transfer from Lenior Community College, to make an immediate impact.

The men’s basketball coaching staff welcomes Charles Rhodes back to his alma mater as an assistant coach. Rhodes competed for the Chowan Blue and White from 2007-2011 and graduated as the school’s sixth all-time leading scorer with 1,082 career points along with a school record 48.7 three-point percentage during the 2008-2009 season. He enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Hawks and fellow Chowan alum Lee Branscome on staff. Chowan opens up the 2015-2016 season on November 13th and 14th as the Hawks travel to Charleston, West Virginia to compete in the West Virginia State Classic. The Hawks take on the University of North Carolina-Greensboro on November 17th in exhibition play before competing against Piedmont International on November 19th in the Helms Center.
