Dear Desert Vista Family, I am so very proud of our students and all they embrace regarding their academics and extra-curricular opportunities. Just as importantly, they continue their desire to learn more about each other in order to be more inclusive and accepting of one another. We tend to view the world through our own experiences in life and more often than not, there is much more to learn and understand about others. Recently, we had our First Annual Diversity Assembly with the assistance and leadership of our Diversity Committee and support from Student Council (click here). Having a voice, building relationships, being inclusive, understanding and treating others with kindness and respect are the goals of the Diversity Committee. The faculty and staff at Desert Vista have long embraced building relationships with students and know this is one very important component of the social and emotional well-being of our students. I am so impressed with our students and their desire to join us in helping their peers nurture and include one another to provide the kind of environment that will allow each student to thrive academically, extra-curricular, socially and emotionally. The Diversity Committee is looking for others to join them in continuing this positive movement on campus. If you think this is something your son or daughter would like to be a part of, please encourage them to attend the Town Hall Meeting this Thursday, February 22nd, during their lunch time to learn more on how they can get involved. It is with great pleasure that I share the accomplishments of our winter sports programs: Congratulations to our State Championship Men’s Soccer Team!! They competed with tenacity and great sportsmanship, and a strong desire to win and brought home the state championship! Congratulations to the coaches, athletes and to all the parents for their support! Congratulations to our Wrestling team in taking 7th overall at state! We had several outstanding individual performances (please see the highlights under “Athletics”). Congratulations to the coaches, athletes and thank you to all of the parents for your support! Congratulations to our Women’s Soccer and Basketball teams for your commitment and dedication to your sport, and to Desert Vista. Congratulations to our Boys Basketball team as they have made it to the Final Four! Come cheer on the Thunder to victory against Pinnacle High School on Wednesday, February 21st at 4:30pm at ASU Wells Fargo Arena. Our Performing Arts programs have been competing and have done an outstanding job in performing with excellence. Good luck to all as they move on to their next competition! Please see the current highlights under “Extra-Curricular Activities”. In light of the horrific tragedy in Florida, below is the communication that was sent out to all of our families:

Dear Desert Vista Family,

The country experienced another tragedy this week, where 17 people lost their lives during a school shooting. As you can imagine, our hearts are broken by what occurred in Florida. As a parent and an educator, it is my worst nightmare. It is our practice to proactively train and drill for a variety of issues. We practice fire drills, shelter in place, and lockdown procedures. Fire drills take place monthly and schools are required to conduct two lockdown/shelter in place drills per year. Desert Vista did have a lockdown/shelter in place drill in August. Our Director of Security regularly conducts specialized training for security staff. He is a retired police chief and brings 30 years of law enforcement experience to the role. All of our security guards have had active shooter training. As you can imagine, we have extensive emergency plans and protocols but for obvious security reasons, we do not share those with the public. However, our Director of Safety is currently revising a document for parents that will provide an overview of our protocols. It will be posted on our website and I will include this document in a future parent newsletter.

Please know that the safety of all of our students is our top priority and staff are trained to provide specific direction to students in the event of an emergency.

Desert Vista and Tempe Union take great measures to increase safety through various means such as perimeter fencing, surveillance cameras, School Resource Officers and emergency planning but, the greatest asset we have is you! If you hear or see something that doesn’t look right or you hear any suspicious potential threats, take action and report it.

Staff Appreciation Luncheon A HUGE thank you to the Teacher Appreciation Committee for organizing the amazing lunch and sweets that our staff received this week!! We are so very grateful and feel the LOVE!!

Sports Highlights:

DV Men's Soccer- State Champions! 6A STATE CHAMPIONS- CONGRATS DV MEN'S SOCCER!!! The DV Men brought home their 4th State Soccer Championship on Saturday, February 10th at Campo Verde High School, with a dominating 3-0 win over previously undefeated and #1 seed Brophy. After a scoreless first half, Brendan Hicks scored on a header from Jordan Hall. That was followed 4 minutes later by a header from Jayden Bourg to make it 2-0 with 20 minutes left. The final goal was scored by Max Wennes on an assist from AJ Abbadessa. Defenders Ty Iannone, Jordan Hall, Bradley Brooks, Michael Lafer along with strong defensive midfield play by Parker Lischwe and Brendan Hicks helped goal keeper Logan Rabasca record the clean sheet and bring home the championship for the Thunder. The championship capped off an incredible year for the boys as they finish with a record of 18-4-1. The Thunder were the 6A Central Division Champions and in addition to being ranked #1 in the State, they are ranked #1 in the Western Region and #21 in the Nation by Top Drawer Soccer. The Thunder can attribute their success to an incredibly strong group of 11 seniors. Led

by Senior Captains, Brendan Hicks, Ty Iannone and Logan Rabasca, the other seniors are: Cole Barnett, David Glenn, Jordan Hall, Kyle Johnson, Connor Stevens, Grant Waller and Max and Sam Wennes. Thank you seniors for leading the Thunder to their 4th State Championship! In addition, the DV Men's soccer brought home some outstanding Regional Awards as a result of a statewide recognition process. Brendan Hicks named Regional Player of the Year, Ty Iannone named Defensive Player of the Year and Head Coach Trent Elliot name Coach of the Year for the 6A Central Region. Selected to the All-Region first team is Brendan Hicks, Ty Iannone, Max Wennes and Parker Lischwe. All Region Second team is Jordan Hall and Honorable Mention, Connor Stevens. Congratulations to Coach Elliott, Coach Munoz, Coach Klein and the entire DV Men's Varsity Soccer Team on a truly fabulous year, and for bringing home the State Championship! GO THUNDER!!

Wrestling The Varsity Wrestling Team just completed their season with a 7th place finish at the Division 1 State Tournament after a second place finish at Sectionals. Competing with 9 State Qualifiers the team had 5 individuals obtain state medals: Tariq Hornbuckle - State-Runner-up @ 120 lbs. Brett Johnson - State Runner-up @ 285 lbs. Armando Delgado - 3rd place @ 195 lbs. Preston Cameau - 4th place @ 160 lbs. Justice Smith - 5th @ 145 lbs. William E. Richardson Program of Distinction Award Congratulations to Dr. Darlene Wedington-Clark and the Desert Vista Orchestras for being presented the William E. Richardson Program of Distinction Award from the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association for the 5th year in a row! This award was given in recognition of superior achievement in all areas of the orchestra program during the 2016-2017 academic year. Well done!!

DV JazzMad Please join me in congratulating our JazzMad Choir for their recent Superior ratings for both the Jazz and Madrigal Divisions at the NAU 2018 Jazz/Madrigal Festival. Fantastic job, everyone!!

Speech & Debate The Desert Vista Speech and Debate Team qualified three students to the National Speech and Debate Association's National Championship Tournament. Seniors, Elyssa Goswick and Monica Essig Aberg, and Junior, Margaret Braun will represent the Thunder in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in June. Goswick, Essig Aberg and Braun will join Taylor Gilliam, Junior, who received an automatic qualification by finishing in the top 10 in the United States at last year’s National Championship Tournament. The rest of the DV team will attempt to qualify their events later this March. They outlasted 55 schools from two states to win the Central High School Tournament. The Thunder found major contributions from across the team when they needed it most. DV had breakthrough performances from Junior Hunter McCormick, Junior Shawn Yousefelahi, and Freshman Natalie Sanchez. The Thunder named Juniors Claire van Doren and Ethan Xie as team MVPs for their servant leadership as well as their positivity, persistence, and poise in the face of adversity. The Thunder will now turn their attention to national level competition. Desert Vista's congressional debaters will attempt to earn the right to represent Arizona at the National Speech and Debate Association's National Championship Tournament while the rest of the team prepares to travel to Harvard University to compete at the largest speech and debate tournament in the country. SUITS (Setting up Incredible Teens for Success): East Valley Women’s League Seniors, Brody Dunn and Khristian Peters, were the selected recipients of a brand new suite from the East Valley Women’s League and Men’s Warehouse. Setting up Incredible Teen for Success provides deserving young men in the east valley a suite for college and job interviews, prom and various other social functions. The EVWL wanted to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young men within our district by purchasing a suit they could use for many life events. This year, 25 young men were selected by teachers and administrators at East Valley Schools received a new suit. Congratulations, Brody and Khristian!!

Brain Tumor Research: 2018 DV 5K Walk/Run February 24th 9:00am-11:30am

This annual charity 5K walk/run event in support of brain tumor research will be held on the morning of Saturday, February 24th, at the DV track. The race begins at 9:30am and is organized by the DV chapter of the National Honor Society. There is a $5.00 entrance fee, and if you would like to race, the cost is $10.00 and have prizes for the racers. We will have many of fun activities and chances to win other prizes. You don’t have to walk/run the 5K to participate in the great opportunity! Zachary Hubbard, Desert Vista graduate and brain tumor survivor, will be our guest speaker. This event is fun for the whole family and all proceeds go to a great cause, so spread the word throughout the community!

Project Rewind with NotMyKid Raising teenagers can bring much joy as well as many challenges. In partnership with NotMyKid, we are working to be proactive in providing information to our students and parents to assist in maneuvering the teenage years successfully. ATTENTION STUDENTS: Illegal Parking on 30th Street by the Park Please be advised that the Phoenix Police Department noted that students are illegally parking near the park on 30th Street by our school and they have received several complaints about the illegal parking. They stated that they will need to start writing parking tickets if the illegal parking continues. Desert Vista Administration is urging students not park in the posted "no parking" areas.

Desert Vista Staff Appreciation Committee Hello DV Parents! Please consider signing up to be part of our newly formed Desert Vista Staff Appreciation Committee!! We have plans to provide a nice luncheon for DV’s entire staff five times throughout the year! You can volunteer to help with set up, clean-up, or donation of cooked items or baked goods. Because graduation is a very important time for seniors, their families and teachers, we have planned a dignified

ceremony to celebrate the occasion. We are asking our seniors to dress and behave appropriately, as they have

all year at Desert Vista High School. A more detailed packet of information will be given to our seniors at the

Senior Graduation Meeting on Monday, May 21, 2018, and it will be posted on our website.

If you, a member of your family and/or a friend need special assistance with parking and/or seating due to a

disability for the graduation ceremony, please contact Mr. Jim Snow at 480-706-7931 or

jsnow@tempeunion.org to make special arrangements. We will have reserved seating directly below the

bleachers on both sides of the stadium for the person needing assistance and one guest.

The seniors will be seated at the center of the stadium field. The young women will be seated on the west and

the young men will be seated on the east. The stadium opens at 6:00pm and the bleachers on both sides of the

field will be available for seating for family and friends. During the ceremony, we will have professional

photographers capturing the special moments of your graduate. Information on how to purchase these

photographs will be included in the packet of information handed out during the Senior Graduation Meeting.

Upon the completion of the ceremony, family and friends will be able to join their graduate for a time of

celebration on the stadium field and seniors will be permitted to leave at that time.

If you will be dropping off your senior for the ceremony, please drop him/her off in the student parking lot if

your last name begins with A-L and the bus turn around off of Liberty Lane if you last name begins with M-Z.

Please note that drop off will not be allowed in the front parking lot off of 32nd Street. If you student is driving,

this process safe and efficient for our students.

Seniors who have completed all of the Tempe Union High School District’s graduation requirements will be

able to participate in the graduation ceremony. Please contact the Guidance Office at 480-706-7944 if you have

questions regarding your son or daughter. Additionally, it is imperative that your son or daughter pay all past

debts at the bookstore before the ceremonies, as not doing so may interfere with participation. Lastly, please

continue to motivate your senior to do his/her best these final few days. We will do the same.

We are looking forward to sharing these special events with our students and their families. Be informed that

discipline issues have interfered with previous graduates’ participation in the graduation ceremonies. We must

continue to ask for exemplary behavior from our student body, including seniors. If a senior is disciplined and

receives off campus suspension, he or she may not participate in the ceremonies. We have much to celebrate

because the class of 2018 has had many accomplishments. We have great hope for the future because of what

each senior possesses. We are very proud of all of them and we know that you are proud of them as well.

Grad Night 2018

Dear Friends of Desert Vista,

On May 24, 2018, 710 students will graduate from Desert Vista High School – The Class of 2018!

Work has been underway by a group of devoted parents for Grad Night festivities. Grad Nights are organized nationally

to give high school grads a unique and memorable once in a life time celebration. The philosophy and ideals behind Grad

Nights are to provide a safe evening, free of vehicles, alcohol and drugs and filled with spectacular fun among fellow grads

and friends for one last time.

DVHS Grad Night will be held on May 24th at the Ultra Star Multi-tainment Center in Maricopa. This all-night celebration

will begin immediately following commencement and will include: a hypnotist show, magician, casino, bowling, laser tag,

arcades, music, dancing, food, prizes and camaraderie. As you can imagine, an evening such as this is costly. In order for

Grad Night to be a success it needs a united commitment from the parents, the school and the community.

The committee is currently seeking donations from local merchants, alumni and friends. Sponsorships to cover the costs

of the various activities or cash donations would be greatly appreciated. The Grad Night Committee is part of the Desert

Vista Thunder Board, which is a 501(c)(3) organization. All contributions are tax deductible.

All Participating sponsors will be recognized in the Graduation Commencement program.

As parents of DVHS seniors, we anticipate that our efforts will result in a first-class event that will insure our graduate’s

safety as they celebrate this momentous event. Thank you for your support in making the 2018 Grad Night event a success.
