Student NewsMidwifery Society (MidSoc) host successful conference

MidSocwrite:“On10thFebruarywehostedanInfantLossandBereavementCareconferencewiththeHarrogatebasedcharity‘OurAngels’.

Wewerereallykeentotakeonthisconferencebecause,particularlyasstudents,infantlossisthemostdauntingaspectofmidwifery.Sofarwehavehadlittleexposuretothetopicandfeltthattobeabletogivethesefamiliesthebestcare,wereallyneededtounderstandtheprinciplesunderlyingthisandthedifferencesinthecarewewouldnormallygiveawomaninlabour.

ChrisBinnie,atrusteeofOurAngelsbelievesthereshouldbemoreeducationandtrainingmadeavailableforallmaternitystaff,notjuststudents.Wehadarangeofspeakersattheevent.JacqueGerrard,DirectoroftheRoyalCollegeofMidwives(RCM),gaveusaninsightintotheglobalaspectofbabyloss.Wehadanumberofparentsspeakingattheeventwhohadexperiencedlosingababy,includingChrisBinnie,DavidandSiobhanMonteithandJulietteGaunt,whoalsofeaturedinthefilm‘StillLoved’whichwescreenedduringtheconference.Whileeachparenthadadifferentexperience,theyallagreedonthesameprinciplesofcareandtheeffectthatthemidwife’scarehasontheexperience.

WealsohadanumberofstallholdersattheeventfromvariousstillbirthandbabylosscharitiesincludingMummy’sStar,BeyondBeaandAbbie’sFund.Thesestallsshoweduswhatisavailableforbereavedparents,suchasmemoryboxesandprofessionalvolunteerphotographers,andalsothewealthofsupportavailableforfamilies.

ThefundingoftheeventwasfromJude’sRainbow.OrganisedbyMatthewandBronaghThompsoninmemoryoftheirsonJude.Over38bikerscompletedacoasttocoastcyclechallengeraisingastaggeringamount.”

CongratulationstoRebeccaTurner,firstyearPGDiplomainNursingstudent,whorecentlyheldacakestallintheDepartmentandraised£105forYorkHospital’sDementiaAppeal.

RebeccawillalsobedoingaskydiveinApril.

New ‘Student Space’ in Student and Academic Support ServiceTheDepartmentofHealthSciences,inconjunctionwithEstatesandCampusServices,arepleasedtoannouncethatournew‘StudentSpace’isnowreadyforuse.Thenewareahasbeendevelopedinresponsetostudentfeedback,bothfromourOnlineSurveys,NationalStudentSurveyandfromstudentrepresentativesatourStudent-StaffForums.WelistenedandrecognisedthatyouneededaspacewithintheDepartmentwhichwillhopefullyhavetheaddedbenefittoenhancetheoverallstudentexperienceforstudentswithinHealthSciences.

ThespaceislocatedoutsideoftheStudentandAcademicSupportServiceonthegroundfloorofSeebohmRowntreeBuilding,justoffthecorridorleadingtotheClinicalSimulationUnit.Thereareanumberofsoftseatingareaslocatedaroundthespacewithtablesandadjustablelaptoptables.WehavealsoaddedanL-Shapesofaandabenchtablewithbarstoolswhichseatsupto6students.Thestudentspaceprovidesqualitystudentspaceformixedmodesofstudyandrelaxation.

MatthewJacobs,HeadofStudentandAcademicSupportServicesays:“thisnewstudentspaceisareallyexcitingdevelopmentforourstudentsandthewiderdepartmentasawhole.ThisnewstudentspacewillhelprecreateasenseofbelongingandcollegialityforHealthSciencesstudents.

Overthenextfewmonthsyouwillseefurtherdevelopmentswithinthespaceincludingtheinstallationofacoldwaterdispenserandanumberofwallmountedstudentresourceholders,includingonededicatedspecificallytoMentalHealthandWellbeing.Inadditiontoyourprogrammenoticeboards,wewillalsohavededicatednoticeboardstoCareersandEmployability,LibraryandITService,‘RoyalCollegeofNursing(RCN)andRoyalCollegeofMidwives(RCM)aswellasUnisonMembership,andtheNurSocandMidSocSocieties.”

Sigma award given to Professor Steven Ersser

ProfessorinClinicalNursingResearchandInterimDeputyHeadofDepartment(Nursing&Midwifery),StevenErsserhasbeenawardedtheInternationalNurseResearchersHallofFameAwardfromSigmaThetaTauInternationalHonorSocietyofNursing.

Sigmainductsresearcherswhohaveachievedsignificantandsustainednationaland/orinternationalrecognitionfortheirwork;andwhoseresearchhasimpactedtheprofessionandthepeopleitserves.ItisthehighestinternationalresearchawardfornursesandStevenisoneofasmallgroupofnursesrecognisedworldwidefor2018.Followingthe2017induction,STTIwillhaverecognized156nurseresearchersfrom13countries.

Stevenhasbeenafullprofessorsince2007andcurrentlytheinauguralProfessorinClinicalNursingResearchattheUniversityofYork,UK.InadditionheisanAdjunctProfessorofNursingatMemorialUniversity,CanadaandaVisitingScholarinnursingattheNationalUniversityofSingapore.Hehasbeenengagedinresearchrelevanttonursingforover30yearswhichspanshisyearsinclinicalpracticeandsubsequentacademicwork.Hisclinicalareaisdermatologicalandskincarenursing.Hehasbeenapioneerinthefieldofdermatologicalnursingandtheapplicationofevidencetoimproveskincareinternationally.In2006,StevenreceivedtheStoneAwardbytheBritishDermatologicalNursingGroup(BDNG)inrecognitionofhispioneeringwork.Heisbelievedtobethefirstnurseinternationally,toholdanursingchairdedicatedtothefieldofdermatological/skincarenursing;firstly,in2007attheUniversitiesofBournemouth,thenatHull(asDeanandProfessorofNursing&DermatologyCare)from2011-2014,thenattheUniversityofLeeds(asDameKathleenRavenProfessorofClinicalNursing)from2014-2017andsince2017attheUniversityofYork.HehasbeenaVisitingscholaratStJohn’sCollege,Cambridge,theStJohn’sInstituteofDermatologyKing’sCollege,LondonandNewYorkUniversity;andHonoraryProfessorofNursingattheUniversityofCapeTown.ProfessorErssercurrentlyservesasanursememberoftheDermatologyNationalSpecialtyGroup,NIHRClinicalResearchNetworkSpecialtyCluster.

Stevenhasmadeasubstantialcontributiontothefieldsofdermatologyandnursingthroughhisworkondevelopingtheory-basedinterventionstosupportthoselivingwithlong-termskinconditions,suchaseczemaandpsoriasis.Thisworkextendstopeoplelivinginresource-poorcountrieswithneglectedtropicalskindiseases.Hehasalsopromotedthedevelopmentandevaluationofskincareforadultsandchildreningeneralcaresettingstoimprovetheirskinbarrierfunction.Hiscurrentworkonsupportingself-managementaimstoinvestigateeffectivemethodsofhelpingthepublicathigherriskofskincancertoengageinskinself-examination,topromoteitsearlydetection.

TheawardalsogivesrecognitiontoSteven’ssubstantialcontributiontomentoringnursesandotherhealthprofessionalsonresearchmethodsandissuesrelatedtoenhancingandevaluatingskincareanddermatologypractice.

Staff take part in Spring Lane Building opening

StaffintheDepartmentrecentlytookpartintheeveningheldtoofficiallyopentheSpringLaneBuilding.

JessicaPowell,DavidGraham,HelenBedfordandRachelLavellehostedthreesimulationworkshopsandgaveaninsightfultalkonhowsimulationisusedforteachingbothnursingandmidwiferystudents.

TheeveningwasopentostaffandstudentsandthetalkswereattendedbycolleaguesfromotherDepartmentswithintheUniversity.

AfterthetalkstherewasanopportunityforpeopletohaveagoonsomeofthesimulationequipmentthatwastransportedfromtheCSUtotheSpringLanebuilding.

Ifyouarewonderinghowthisequipmentwastransported,theimageontheleftmaywellgiveyouaclue.

Itraisedanumberofeyebrowsandafewoddcommentsfromstudentsonthetripbackoveraftertheevent!

Research NewsStudy suggests screening could prevent a quarter of hip fractures Communityscreeningforosteoporosiscouldpreventmorethanaquarterofhipfracturesinolderwomen,newresearchinvolvingtheDepartmentofHealthSciencessuggests

AmajorstudyreportedinTheLancethasrevealedthatasimplequestionnairecombinedwithbonemineraldensitymeasurementsforsome,couldhelpidentifyindividualsatriskofhipfractures,allowingthemtobeofferedpreventativetreatmentbeforefracturesoccur.

Around79,000peopleintheUK,manyofthemolderwomen,sufferhipfractureseachyearanddueanageingpopulationthatnumberissettoincrease.Theinjuryisoftenaccompaniedbyadevastatinglossofindependence,withlessthanonethirdofpatientsmakingafullrecovery.

Thenewstudy,whichinvolvedmorethan12,000womenaged70to85,foundthatscreeningthroughGPpracticesallowedpatientstobetargetedforosteoporosistreatment,astepwhichledtoa28%reductioninhipfracturesoverfiveyearsinthewomenwhoagreedtoparticipate.

Collaboratoronthestudy,ProfessorDavidTorgersonsaid:“Morethan2,000womenfromtheNorthYorkshireregionwereinvolvedinthisimportantstudy,whichisoneofthelargesttrialsoffracturepreventionintheworld.”

Ofthe12,483womeninvolvedinthetrial,halfwerescreenedsothatscreeningcouldbecomparedwithroutinecare.Amongthosescreened,treatmentwassubsequentlyrecommendedforoneinsevenwomendeemedathighriskofhipfracture.Overthreequartersofthewomenathighriskwereonosteoporosismedicationswithinsixmonthsofscreening.

Whilescreeningdidnotreducetheincidenceofallosteoporosis-relatedfractures,therewasstrongevidenceforareductioninhipfractures.

Inthescreeninggroup,therewere54fewerwomenwhosufferedoneormorehipfracturescomparedtotheroutinecaregroup.Thestudysuggeststhatonehipfracturecouldbepreventedforevery111womenscreenedandearlyanalysissuggeststheapproachislikelytobecost-effective.

Themulti-institutionalresearchteamwasledbyacademicsattheuniversitiesofEastAngliaandSheffieldandinvolvedresearchersfromfiveotheruniversitiesincludingManchester,BirminghamandYork,inadditionto100primarycarepractices.TheresearchersusedatooldevelopedattheUniversityofSheffieldcalledFRAX,asimplecalculationtoolthatintegratesclinicalinformationtopredicttheprobabilityofahiporotherosteoporosis-relatedfracturetoidentifywomenathighrisk.

DrNatalieCarter,headofresearchliaisonandevaluationatArthritisResearchUK,said:“TensofthousandsofpeopleayearpresentwithhipfracturesintheUK.Aswellassignificantlyincreasingmortality,ahipfracturecanstopaperson’sabilitytoliveindependently,with43%nolongerbeingabletowalkindependentlyintheyearafterthefracture.

Wewelcomethiscommunitybasedscreeningprogrammeandanyotherresearchthatreducesthelikelihoodoffractures.”

Therandomisedcontrolledtrial“ScreeningforOsteoporosisinOlderwomenforthePreventionoffracture”(SCOOP)isreportedinTheLancetandwasfundedbytheMedicalResearchCouncilandArthritisResearchUK.

Gap between rich and poor widening, according to Oxfam reportThegapbetweenthesuper-richandtherestoftheworldwidenedlastyearaswealthcontinuedtobeownedbyasmallminority,areportbyOxfamhasrevealed.

TheRewardWork,NotWealthreportrevealedsome82%ofmoneygeneratedlastyearwenttotherichest1%oftheglobalpopulationwhilethepooresthalfsawnoincreaseatall.

ThereporthasbeenwelcomedbyKatePickett,ProfessorofEpidemiologyintheDepartmentofHealthSciences,andtheUniversity’sResearchChampionforJusticeandEquality.

ProfessorPickettistheco-authorofTheSpiritLevel,abest-sellingbookwhichhighlightstheproblemscausedbyunequaldistributionofincomes.

ProfessorPickett,whoalsoadvisedonsomeaspectsoftheOxfamreport,said:”I’mdelightedthatOxfamcontinuestodrawtheworld’sattentiontotheintractableandgrowingproblemofinequality,andallofitsterribleconsequences,aswellashighlightinghowmuchpeople,allacrosstheworld,wouldliketoliveinmoreequalsocieties.”

Thereporthighlightstaxevasion,corporateinfluenceonpolicy,erosionofworkers’rightsandarelentlessdrivetominimisecostsinordertomaximisereturnstoinvestorsascontributingfactorsinthewideninggapbetweenthesuper-richandtherest.

Billionairewealthrosebyanaverageof13%ayearbetween2006and2015–sixtimesfasterthanthewagesofordinaryworkers.IttakesjustfourdaysforaCEOofoneoftheworld’sfivebiggestfashionretailerstoearnasmuchasaBangladeshigarmentworkerwillearninherentirelifetime.

Thereportrevealswomenconsistentlyearnlessthanmenandareconcentratedinthelowest-paid,least-secureformsofwork.Atcurrentratesofchangeitwilltake217yearstoclosetheglobalgapinpayandemploymentopportunitiesbetweenwomenandmen.

MarkGoldring,OxfamGBChiefExecutive,said:“Theconcentrationofextremewealthatthetopisnotasignofathrivingeconomybutasymptomofasystemthatisfailingthemillionsofhard-workingpeopleonpovertywageswhomakeourclothesandgrowourfood.

“Leadersshouldensurethatwealthyindividualsandbusinessespaytheirfairshareoftaxbycrackingdownontaxavoidance,andinvestthisintoessentialserviceslikeschoolsandhospitals,andcreatingjobsforyoungpeople.”

ImproveddatahasledtoanupwardrevisionofOxfam’sannualestimateofhowmanypeopleownthesameasthepooresthalfofhumanity,althoughthetrendofwideninginequalityremains.

Now,42peopleownthesamewealthasthepoorest50%.InitslatestGlobalWealthReportCreditSuisseexpandeditsdataset.Usingthisnewdata,Oxfamnowcalculatesthatlastyear61peopleownedthesameashalftheworld.Asrecentlyas2009,thefigurewas380.

Whenmostpeoplethinkofcannabisusers,theyprobablythinkmainlyoftheyoungergenerations.Butit’sactuallythe45to64agegroupwhoshowthehighestproportionofhouseholdspendingoncannabis.

RecentfiguresoncannabisuseinCanadafoundnearly5mpeopleagedbetween15and64spentanestimated5.7billiondollarsoncannabisduring2017.That’soneinfivepeopleinthisagegroup.Mostofthiswasspentonthedrugforrecreationalratherthanmedical,whichiscurrentlyillegalinCanada.NosurprisethenthatthecannabisindustryinCanadaisnowbiggerthanthebeerandtobaccoindustry.

Well,that’sjustCanada,youmightthink,butyouwouldbewrong.InAustralia,lifetimecannabisusemorethandoubledbetween2004and2013intheover50s.TheUKhasseensimilartrends,withlifetimeuseofcannabisinthe65to74agegrouprisingmorethansevenfoldbetween2000and2014.IntheUS,therateofself-reportedcannabisuseovertheprevious12monthsinpeopleaged65andabovealsojumpedmassivelybetween2003and2014.

York Trials Unit writing week continues TheYorkTrialsUnitwritingweekcontinuesandBelenCorbachowrites:“ManythankstoallofyouwhotookpartintheSecondEditionofSemanaGastronomica.Also,thankyoutoAndrewFosterforaninterestingsessionaboutcostingresearch.

Weachievedmostofourplanandverypositivefeedbackwasreceivedfromallteams.Despitebusytimesandpressingdeadlinesweallmanagedtodevotesometimetowritinginseveralways.Wehavecontributedtofourgrantapplications(onenowoutforcomments)andoneIRASamendmentform.WemadeprogressinthreeprotocolsandfourHTAreports;oneconferenceabstractwassubmittedandonePHDedited.

Overallwemanagedtomadeprogressfor23papersinseveralways:formulatingideas,searching,screening,codinganalysis,addressingreviewerscommentsandsubmittingmanuscripts.ThewinningteamwasSevillewhohadanimpressiveweekandsubmitted3manuscripts.AlexMitchellwashonouredtoreceivethe‘Paellera’awardonbehalfthechefleaderAdaKeding,whocouldnotattendthepricegivingsessionduetoothertastycommitments.EmilyPeckhamwasour‘Michelinstarredchef’oftheweekfortheoutstandingcookperformance(twodeliciouspapers!).IhopethewinnerslikethericeandsaffronbroughtfromSevilleandenjoyedcookingwiththem.Justaquicktip:thereisnoplaceforchorizoinpaella!!

ItbeganwithCOMICResearchFellow,DanielleVarley,whospokeaboutresearchundertakenbytheCOMICteamintotwointerventionsforchildrenwithanAutismSpectrumDisorder(ASD),SocialStories™andLEGO®-basedtherapy,andhowthesewerecreatedspecificallyforchildrenandyoungpeopleandcanhelpwithsocialskillsandunderstanding.ThenextpresentationwasgivenbyCOMICResearchAssistantMeganGarsidewhopresentedabouttheClusterSchoolsProject,anongoingstudywhichidentifiesandthenevaluatesmentalhealthandwellbeingservicesinmainstreamsecondaryschools.ThepresentationincludedsomeinitialresultswhichwerecollectedinJanuary2017,andinformationabouttheprocessofthestudygoingforwardthisyear.DrElizabethEdginton,COMICResearchFellow,presentedkeyfindingsfromtheirfeasibilitystudy;anRCTtoimproveinter-generationalattachmentforchildrenaged5-11withtreatmentresistantconductdisorders.ThenextpresentationwasgivenbyProfessorMarkMon-Williams.Hispresentationhighlightedtheimportanceofmovement,andmotor-control.ThisincludedinterestingfindingsfromstudieswhichlinkedsensorimotorcontrolandcognitiveattainmentinyoungchildrenfromtheBorninBradfordcohort.

ProfessorBarryWright’spresentationoutlinedinitialfeasibilityresearchplanswiththeUniversityofYorkinvestigatingtheroleofmicroRNAsinautism.Thisincludedasummaryoftheexistingliterature,andanoverviewoftheplantobuildateamtoexploreifmicroRNAscouldbebiomarkersinASDandtheimplicationsforaetiology.ThenexttalkwasgivenbyCOMICResearchAssistants,RachelHodkinsonandEllenKingsley.TheyspokeaboutdepressioninadolescentsandcurrenttreatmentoptionsrecommendedbytheNationalInstituteforHealthandCareExcellence(NICE).

ProfessorMeinspresentedsomefascinatingfindingsfromherlongitudinalresearchspanningthelast20yearsintomind-mindedness,theabilityforparentsto“tunein”towhattheirbabymaybethinkingandfeeling.COMICResearchAssistant,EmilyHayward,withthehelpof“DuckNorris”,theUniversityofYork’smascot,gaveapresentationaboutbehaviouralavoidancetasks.Shediscussedresearchfindingsintheiruseasanoutcomemeasureinspecificphobiaresearchinchildrenandyoungpeople,gavealiveBATdemonstrationandtalkedabouttheASPECTstudywhichiscurrentlybeingundertakenbytheCOMICteamandSheffieldCTRU.ChrisRhymesgaveaninformativepresentationabouttheNIHR’sclinicalresearchnetworkandtheDepartmentforHealth’srecentdecisiontochangetheeligibilitycriteriaforCRNsupport.Excitingly,thiswillmeanthattheCRNisnowabletosupportresearchconductedoutsideofNHSsettingsprovidingitisfundedbyanandCRN,hediscussedhowthisappliedtohisroleasaresearcherontheASPECTTrial.

DrNicoleGridleyreportedontheworkassessingthemeasuresusedtoevaluateparentingprogrammesfortheparentsofyoungchildren.Shepresentedasystematicreviewofrandomisedcontrolledtrials(RCTs)usingvariousmeasures,thefindingsofwhichincludedalackofconsistencyinmeasuresusedandlimitedevidencebasesforusewithyoungerpopulations.ThefinalpresentationofthedaywasgivenbyProfessorBarryWright.HediscussedastudyconductedwiththeBorninBradfordcohort.

PCMIS supporting Universities UK ‘Stepchange’ student mental health framework

Now,morethanever,thefocusinMentalHealthisonprevention.Charities,thinktanks,governmentaldepartmentsandresearchersarefocusedonhowwecaneducate,supportandengagewithyoungpeopletotrytoensuretheirmentalhealthdoesnotpreventthemfromlivingfulfillinglivesandmaximisingtheirpotential.

Universitycanbeatimeofgreatupheavalanduncertaintyinaperson’slife,whichiswhystudentmentalhealthiscurrentlyreceivinglotsofmediacoverage.

UniversitiesUK,acharityrepresentingandsupportingtheUKuniversitysector,understandsthatuniversitiesplayahugelyimportantroleandshould‘adoptmentalhealthasastrategicpriority,implementingawholeuniversityapproach’inordertolookaftertheirstudentpopulationandwholeuniversitycommunity.

InSeptember2017theylaunchedStepchange,theirvisionformentalhealthinhighereducation.Withrecommendationsforhowuniversitiescanunderstandandapproachmentalhealth,thisnewframeworknotonlysetsoutkeystepsforuniversitiestotakeinchangingtheirculture,butalsoplacesanemphasisonharnessingdata,focusingonevidence-basedinterventionsasameansofidentifyingandadaptingsuccessfulpractice.

AspartofourworkprovidingcasemanagementsolutionstotheHEsector,PCMISworkwithOpenDoor,UniversityofYork’smentalhealthsupportteam.PCMISprovidestheOpenDoorteamwiththetoolstomanagetheircaseloadeffectively,maintainhigh-quality,accuratedata,andreportbacktotheUniversityboardregularly.

From2017onwardstheUniversityofYork,alongwiththeUniversityoftheWestofEngland,Bristol,andCardiffUniversity,willpilotimplementationofthe‘wholeuniversity’approachsetoutintheUniversitiesUKstepchangeframework.

WearepleasedtoannouncethatPCMISandMHARGaretakingpartofthispilot,ledbyUniversityoftheWestofEngland,assistingwiththecollectionofdataandgatheringevidencetosupportimprovingstudentmentalhealth.

Announcing the passing of Professor Alan Maynard

TheDepartmentwassadtoannouncethatAlanMaynard,EmeritusProfessorofHealthEconomicsandFoundingDirectoroftheCentreforHealthEconomicsattheUniversityofYork,passedawayearlierthismonth.

ProfessorMaynardOBEwasfirstappointedtotheUniversityasalecturerin1971andoverthecourseofhiscareerhemadeatremendouscontributiontothefieldofHealthEconomicsandthelifeoftheUniversityasawhole.HewasacrucialvoiceinthedevelopmentofUKandinternationalhealthpolicyandatalentedandprolificacademic.HewillbegreatlymissedbyeveryoneattheUniversityandrememberedforhiskindness,mentorship,witandwisdom.
