In what ways does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Title of the FilmThe title of our film 'Anderson' fits in with the thriller genre. It is stereotypical as it is short and snappy such as other thriller films like 'Payback' and 'Copycat' which are all short titles aswell. We got the idea for the name of our film from another hitman thriller 'Leon' who also just uses his name as the title, Leon is known as a typical thriller which is also what we wanted to perceive in our film.

The title also has a sense of enigma about it as it doesn't give away much of the films storyline or characters. So it gets the audience guessing such things as 'What or who is Anderson?' and 'Why is it so important?'

The Setting/LocationThe location of our thriller opening, as seen below, is situated within an office building. This is very typical within the thriller genre as the stereotypical locations are in urban areas, like our setting. Such films like 'Payback' and 'Copycat' are also set in urban areas and these were the sort of films we were looking at before we set up where we wanted our film to be located.

Costumes and Props• Our costumes were very typical

for films in the thriller genre. As firstly all our characters are wearing smart clothes and look professional, this fits in which other thriller films such as Taken shown in the picture on the left. We used few props throughout our film, the only major one being the briefcase, this links in with the typical career path that many thriller protagonist follow, being a professional business man

Camerawork and Editing• Again our camerawork and editing

was also typical of the thriller genre and abided by the forms and conventions. We used a variety of shot types to aid us in the build up of suspense and also framed each shot so our protagonists head wasn't in shot to help us with our enigmas as seen in the screen shot below. We took this idea from Leon, as seen in the shot above the opening also uses shots to surround mystery to him.

• Our editing also fits in other thriller films, as the build up to the suspense mainly consisted of long held shots, meaning the pace of our film was slowed due to this. This aided in us building up the suspense into the final shot which is what typical thriller films do.

Credit Font and Style• Our credit font and style was just a

basic, yet fancy look. The font had a serif on the end of some letters and also had a blue shadow on it (as you can see in the image below). This went against the forms and conventions of the typical thriller however as where it is fancy looking, as opposed to just being a bold, masculine font and style (as seen in the Payback poster). This again aids with our suspense in our opening as the blue shadow creates a sinister effect surrounding the text, linking in with our character, and the enigma, is there a sinister effect surrounding him?

Story and how the opening sets it up• Our storyline fits in with the forms

and conventions of thriller films perfectly. It involves a hitman, working in an office and has enigmas, - 3 things which all shout out thriller film.

• The opening helps set this up as throughout the whole scene it builds up on the enigmas of who is this person? as you never see his face or hear him talk. But you know something is dodgy with him as you see in the ending of the film where we reveal the victim. This opens up the story and also attracts the audience in as now they have several other questions they want answers to in the film.

Genre and how the opening sets it up• During our opening the targeted

genre is thriller. So throughout the opening we made sure we used typical forms and conventions that will make it obvious that it is a thriller. We used locations and costumes typical to this genre and then fitted the mysterious storyline of the man into the opening as well to show that it is a thriller.

How characters are introduced• In our opening we only have two

characters, our main mysterious character and also our secretary.

• Our protagonist is introduced throughout the duration of the opening, we see him get ready for work, showing his attire, hinting at what his profession is. We then see him the office again hinting at what he does, but the reveal at the end of the tied up victim puts a twist on his, so far, normality.

• Our secretary character is only in the opening for a short time, but from that we see she is a typical secretary, wearing smart clothes, glasses, and waiting to hand her boss a fresh cup of coffee.

Special Effects• During our film we edited in a few

special effects that will relate to the forms and conventions of the thriller genre that we aiming for.

• Firstly we used dissolves in our film (as seen in the picture to the right), with some shots and for our credits aswell. This aids to create a sense of incompleteness as the picture fades out and disappears into another. Fitting in with the genre of the suspense and uncertainty surrounding storylines.

• We also had to use colour correction in our film to add a blue effect to the shots of our main character walking to work, this helps us build up the setting and draws more attention to his surroundings showing that it is in an urban area, typical to the thriller genre.
