    David Bowie

David Bowie, born David Robert Jones on 8 January1944, is an English musician, actor, record producerand arranger. A major figure for over four decades inthe world of popular music, Bowie is widely regardedas an innovator, particularly for his work inthe 1970s,and is known for his distinctive voice and theintellectual depth of his work.Bowie first caught the eyeand ear of the public In July 1969, when his song"Space Oddity" reached the top five of the UK SinglesChart. After a three-year period of experimentation here-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with theflamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust,

spearheaded by the hit single "Starman" and thealbum .The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and theSpiders from Mars. Bowie's impact at that time, asdescribed by biographer David Buckley, "challengedthe core belief of the rock music of its day" and"created perhaps the biggest cult in popular culture.

The relatively short-lived Ziggy persona proved merelyone face of a career marked by continual reinvention, musical innovation and striking visual presentation.

After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, Bowie hadUK number ones with the 1980 single "Ashes toAshesand itsparent album, Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). He pairedwith Queen for the 1981 UK chart-topping single "UnderPressure", then reached a new commercial peak in 1983 withthe album Let's Dance, which yielded the hit singles "Let's

Dance", "China Girl", and "Modern Love". Throughout the 1990sand 2000s, Bowie continued to experiment with musical styles,

There has been speculation over the years about Bowies sexuality. When he hadeventually came out in public that he was a biesexaul it had led to him regrettingmaking it public. Bowie had stated it being harder in America to not become apresentation of certain people and wave flags around and be known for only that. However he had said that being a biesexaul had helped in creating Ziggy Stardust.

Bowie is also known for his career in acting, he has studied under Lindsey Kemp.

After becoming famous for his music career and fashion David carried on his acting. His most known role in theatre world was for The Elephant Man he played in 1980-81. However his film career was more of a successful outlet. In 1976 he was givenhis first major film role in The Man who fell to Earth, this led on to more known filmssuch as The Hunger 1983, Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence, Absolute Beginners1986 where his music is more presented but was given a role in the film, TheLabyrinth 1986, although the film had not done well at the box office in time it hadbecome a major cult film and also in 2006 he appeared in The Prestige.

He then demoed the song that would provide his commercialbreakthrough. "Space Oddity" was released later in the yearto join with the first moon landing. Breaking up withFarthingale shortly after the film, Bowie moved in with MaryFinnigan as her lodger. Continuing the divergence from rockand roll and blues begun by his work with Farthingale, Bowie

joined forces with Finnigan, Christina Ostrom and BarrieJackson to run a folk club on Sunday nights at the ThreeTuns pub in Beckenham High Street. This soon morphed intothe Beckenham Arts Lab, and became extremely popular. The Arts Lab hosted a free festival in a local park, later byBowie in his song "Memory of a FreeFestival."Space Oddity"

was released on 11 July, five days ahead of the Apollo 11launch, to become a UK top five hit. Bowie's second album,Space Oddity, followed in November; originally issued in theUK as David Bowie, it caused some confusion with itspredecessor of the same name, and the early US releasewas instead titled Man of Words/Man of Music. Featuringphilosophical post-hippie lyrics on peace, love and morality,

its acoustic folk rock occasionally fortified by harder rock, thealbum was not a commercial success at the time of its

+Ziggy Stardust Dressed in a striking costume, his hair dyed red, Bowie

launched his Ziggy Stardust stage show with the Spidersfrom MarsRonson, Bolder and Woodmanseyat the TobyJug pub in Tolworth on 10 February 1972. The show was

hugely popular, catapulting him to stardom as he toured theUK over the course of the next six months and creating, asdescribed by Buckley, a "cult of Bowie" that was "uniqueits influence lasted longer and has been more creative thanperhaps almost any other force within pop fandom.

Bowie's love of acting led his total immersion in thecharacters he created for his music. "Offstage I'm a robot.Onstage I achieve emotion. It's probably why I preferdressing up as Ziggy to being David." With satisfactioncame severe personal difficulties: acting the same role overan extended period, it became impossible for him toseparate Ziggy Stardust.

After breaking up the Spiders from Mars, Bowie attemptedto move on from his Ziggy persona. His back cataloguewas now highly sought: The Man Who Sold the World hadbeen re-released in 1972 along with Space Oddity. "Life onMars?", from Hunky Dory, was released in June 1973 andmade number three in the UK singles chart. Entering thesame chart in September, Bowie's novelty record from 1967,"The Laughing Gnome", would reach number four.Pin Ups,a collection of covers of his 1960s favourites, followed inOctober, producing a UK number three hit in "Sorrow" anditself peaking at number one, making David Bowie the best-selling act of 1973 in the UK. It brought the total number ofBowie albums currently in the UK chart to six.

In this music video it features clips from the actual film were David Bowie had

written and starred in.I choose this video because at the time it was seen assomething completely new and different from Bowies style, it sparkedcriticism from fans for becoming too commercial.

    + The music video is

shown in mostly blackand white, this is done toadd the classic look andthe mystery edge to thewomen, it also brings acontrast to the clip from

the film show in color. This was done toperhaps make theaudience more aware ofthe random cuts and

jump back to the musicvideo and then back tothe movie.

This video shows two differenttypes of love and addiction.Where in the movie it has the

love story but in the musicvideo we have Bowie and hisaddiction but in a form of awomen adding a light versionof love.

The costume is also verystereotyped , with thewhole mystery crimelook, with the black andwhite, it makes it feels

almost like watching aclassic film but thenadding the modern twistof the Zebra women andthe coloured clips madethe video my appealing

    for viewers.
