    DRIVER/MANAGER

This rapidly growing truck line was formed to meet the shipping needsof four Pettisville businesses—Buckeye Equipment, The Denim Maker,Taylor Office Supplies, and The Towne Crier. All four businesses werehaving difficulty shipping goods into and out of Pettisville.

A corporation was formed by the four businesses, and two rigs werepurchased. Rosie O’Riley and her husband, Ben, were hired to drive thenewly purchased trucks. For the moment, the transportation problemwas solved.

Elmer Murphy had contracted the local deliveries (or agreed toprovide this delivery service for a fee) for many Pettisville businesses forforty years. When he died, 18 Wheeler Truck Lines purchased the rightsto provide local delivery service from the Murphy heirs. Several vanswere added to 18 Wheeler’s existing fleet of trucks. These vans were tobe used for local deliveries of goods and the U.S. mail. Later, 18 Wheelerwas fortunate to be the truck line awarded a contract to haul U.S. mailfrom distribution centers to local post offices.

The corporation has become a majorbusiness in the Pettisville community. The 18 Wheeler vans can be seen on thestreets of Pettisville at any hour of theday or night. And the blue and gold18 Wheeler trucks can be seen movinggoods throughout the United States.

Much of their success, according tothe president of the board of directors, should be credited to the quality of thefleet drivers. Each 18 Wheeler driverhas over five years of truck driving

experience, has passed strict physical examinations, and is a responsibleindividual. Without a doubt, 18 Wheeler truck drivers are among thebest on the road.

Larry Avery grew up in downtown Milwaukee where his father was adockworker. As a boy, Larry used to go down to the waterfront and watchthe workers unload freighters. After high school he started working onthe docks himself. He soon became familiar with the repair and operationof heavy-duty machinery.

Larry became good friends with Guy Burkholder (“Buck” for short),who operated a big crane on the dock. Seven years later Buck and Larryhad saved enough money to buy the big warehouse on Olentangy Roadnear the Conrail tracks. They began renting front loaders, compressors, grinders, and small cranes. Today the partnership sells, rents, and repairsindustrial equipment of all kinds, including conveyor belts, hand trucks, sewing machines, assembly line equipment, and forklifts.

As new industries come into Pettisville, the demand for morespecialized equipment requires Buck to do more steel fabricating. Heenjoys designing and building special parts that will provide hiscustomers with greater efficiency in their operations.

Larry enjoys sales work. Given a choice, he would spend all daydemonstrating to customers the use of various pieces of equipment. Butbusiness has expanded so much that the partners must spend muchtime “on the road” maintaining their rental equipment. The need forequipment maintenance and repair increases each time they sell or rentanother piece of equipment.

It took only a fewmonths to totally redecorate theshop (using a Hawaiian theme, ofcourse!) and turn it into afashionable retail-clothing store.Kimo made the wise decision tokeep the two clerks who hadpreviously worked in the candy shopand who had a lot of sellingexperience. Soon Kimo was ready towelcome the first customers to hernew store, The Clothes Closet.

Business has been very good. The Clothes Closet features sportsweardesigned by a local designer, Felicia Hernandez. Her clothing designsare recognized all over the country. Kimo believes that theHernandez-designed fashions are the key to her successful operation.

Her Hawaiian fashions have also increased in popularity here on themainland. The fashion shows Kimo has presented at the downtownMaumee River Mall have attracted many Toledo residents to The Clothes Closet.

    ENIMAKERM

It all began during the economic recession of 1949. Three brothers—Jack, Phil, and Walter—owned a small factory on Gold Mine Lane inPettisville. Unfortunately, they couldn’t find anyone interested in leasingthe building, so it sat empty for several years. Finally, the brothersconvinced a well-known Georgia textile firm to open a new factory inPettisville. A textile firm is a business that manufactures fabrics or clothing. To make sure the company would go through with the deal, the brothersoffered the textile firm a ten-year, rent-free lease on the factory. Therewas one restriction, however. The company (The Denim Maker) had tohire local people to work in the factory.

The new factory opened, and people from the Pettisvillearea were hired. The DenimMaker’s main purpose was tomanufacture denim fabricaccording to the specificationsof Mean Jeans ManufacturingCo. Mean Jeans was then—and is now—The DenimMaker’s main customer.

The small factory thrivedin Pettisville! After the ten-yearlease expired, the Georgia-based company purchasedthe property and enlarged thefactory building. At that timeThe Denim Maker’s factory workers decided to form a union.

Today trailers owned by 18 Wheeler Truck Lines bring bales of fluffyGeorgia cotton to Pettisville. Often these trailers are carried on Conrailby piggyback (or loaded on flatcars). Bolts of denim in a rainbow of colorsare shipped daily from The Denim Maker to manufacturing firms acrossthe country.

CAREER MANAGERLarge textile firm is nowseeking a career-orientedindividual to manage itsPettisville factory. Musthave initiative and bepeople-oriented. Interestin labor and managementrelations helpful. E-mailyour resume to

PART 2: Orientation to the 15 Businesses 27

Mean Jeans Manufacturing Co. buys in quantity from The DenimMaker and turns the soft, white denim into every type of garment frompainter’s overalls to evening attire. Mean Jeans buys over 90 percent ofthe denim made by The Denim Maker.

Because of the success enjoyed by The Denim Maker, it is notsurprising that the employees’ labor union has brought many demandsto the bargaining table. The current labor contract ends in July.

Since there have been rumors of a possible strike by union workers,a manager is needed to negotiate with the union. A strike is a shutdownof the operation of a business caused by employees who refuse to workin an effort to force the employer to pay better wages or improve workingconditions. In addition, the manager’s duties will include hiring newemployees, keeping banking and payroll records, and completing billsof lading. The manager also will be expected to handle daily transactionswith other businesses.

    HOLLYWOOD & VINE

Steve and Kathy Ripley grew up in Pettisville, Ohio, were high schoolsweethearts, and married while they were in college. After graduationthey both were hired to teach at Pettisville High School where Stevefirst taught typewriting and office procedures (and, later, computerapplications) in the Business Education Department and Kathy was amath teacher.

Steve asked the president of the Chamber ofCommerce to serve on his school’s advisorycommittee. In a conversation with the chamberpresident, Steve discovered that Pettisvilleneeded a local video store. The closest videodistributor was over 20 miles away, and thechamber believed this was a businessopportunity being overlooked.

When Steve told Kathy about his discussionwith the chamber president, she exclaimed, “I’dlove to own a video store!” Steve and Kathytalked over the situation and made the decisionfor Kathy to leave teaching. Steve would help herset up the business and spend summers andweekends helping out, while their children wouldhave made-to-order jobs after school.

Steve and Kathy convinced many people that their idea was a goodone. In 1992 Hollywood & Vine Videos (with Steve and Kathy as majorstockholders) received a corporate charter and began serving thecommunity. The store is located at the corner of Kneepatch Avenue andMain Street.

The chamber’s prediction proved correct. Pettisville residents were eagerto have a video store in their community. Kathy has concentrated on goodcustomer relations. When a customer asks for a video the store doesn’t carry, she makes every effort to find it for the customer. BCOMMUNITYCENTER

Pettisville has always been a warm, friendly community in which to liveand work. This spirit of “togetherness” has existed for many years.

Over 70 years ago, Haywood Lee donated an attractive tract of landfor a place to gather for community activities. Today that same five-acreplot of land northeast of the Pettisville business district is the locationof a picturesque community center. The structure is appropriately calledLee Community Center.

Many people from the Pettisvillecommunity are members of Lee CommunityCenter. Hayrides, recycling project meetings, physical fitness classes, and athletic events areheld regularly. The center helps the poor ofPettisville with a soup kitchen and byconstructing modest homes for the needy. The center also serves as a collection pointfor donated items for persons or families whohave suffered a tragedy such as a fire, flood, tornado, accident, or illness.

Recently a new program was initiated and is receiving enthusiasticsupport. Volunteers set aside time to tutor children in foreign languagesand various musical instruments. The center offers entertainmentprograms for teens on Saturday nights. Classes are also available inmoney management and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

Lee Community Center operates entirely on monies donated by thecommunity and from annual membership dues. When revenues (incomefrom donations) are not as high as expenses (money spent to keep thecenter operating), then it becomes necessary for the center to raisemoney through other means, such as fundraising letters.

Lee Community Center also prepares and distributes a monthlynewsletter to all businesses in the Pettisville community. The monthlynewsletter and any fundraising letters written are prepared using

A Strawberry Festival has been held each July for the past ten years.Community residents come to the center’s grounds to samplehomemade ice cream, cakes, cookies, and pies made with localstrawberries. In addition to the wide variety of activities offered by thecenter itself, many organizations hold their meetings in the center’smeeting rooms.

The travel needs of the Pettisvillecommunity vary greatly. Passports-2-Go hasseen an increase in service to businesses inPettisville but has experienced a decline insales from individuals planning travel. Themain reason for the decrease in sales toindividuals is the availability of travelarrangements made through Internetservices. The Internet is a worldwidenetwork of users who communicateelectronically. Sidney saw this trend earlyon and concentrated his sales efforts on thebusiness community.

Because of Sidney’s careful planning and hard work, his volume ofsales has increased; and he has added more staff to accommodate theneeds of the business community. Currently, Passports-2-Go offers groupand individual travel plans to meet the needs of small and largecorporations, senior citizens groups, charity fundraisers, church groups, and meeting planners.

Passports-2-Go arranges for hotel reservations, airline flights, airportand transportation coordination, car rentals, business conferences, off-site activities planning, name badge preparation, and food and beverageservice. The travel agency specializes in assisting businesses in offeringincentive trips for their employees and customers. It also provides anadditional service to businesses that few other travel agencies offer—customized reports to help clients control their travel budgets.

Sidney is aware of the timesaving advantages available to himthrough the use of a computer. He uses the latest travel software, whichsimplifies the reservations process. He would like to hire an account

The manager of Passports-2-Go will be expected to keep bankingand payroll records, bill customers for services received, hire newemployees, and travel with groups as needed. The manager will also beexpected to handle daily transactions with other businesses.
