The other day one of our daughters commented on how excited she was about Christmas and how this time

of year made her feel so happy inside. She said she wanted to start her Santa list. She ended her comments with a squeal of giddiness.I was excited too from just listen-ing to her and a thought came to mind. I told her that was a won-derful way to feel and would she like for other people to feel that way as well? (head nods) “Well maybe along with that “I want” list you will make for yourself, you could make another list of

ideas of how you can help make other people feel just like you are feeling right now.” (thinking look) “Maybe make a scarf for a friend, bake some goodies for a neighbor, donate one of your warm blankets to a shelter, spend a little of your money on a toy for another child, or spend some time just listening to an elderly person’s stories and asking for more.” The excited, happy feeling grew even more and off she went to make her 2 lists.No matter what special holiday you celebrate this time of year, there are many ideas that a child or anyone can do to give someone else wonderful, happy feelings. What will be on your list?

cDD meeting Notes

The CDD board has been working on several improvements for our MP1 community.

• Splash Pad for MP1. Plans are being drawn up for the addition of a children’s “water park” which will be constructed near the cabana at the lower pool. The wading pool will be removed for this more sanitary water option for our kids. We anticipate the new water park to be complete by early Spring, 2011.

• Entryway arbors. We are considering removing the brick and wooden arbors in the median of Aronwood Blvd, and modifying the entryways on Bruce B. Downs Blvd.

• MP Sign for Fitness Center. Our new Fitness Center will have the Meadow Pointe logo and sign installed as soon as the permitting is complete.

• Tennis/Lacrosse Practice Wall. The wall is complete and ready to use! The Wiregrass High School lacrosse team was happy to test it out at a picnic in November.

The board is happy to report that even with the addition of the Fitness Center, MP1’s assessments remained the same as last year. v

MeaDow Pointe 1 HoliDay FairThe second annual Meadow Pointe Holiday Fair was held November 6th. This FREE event showcased the talents and products of 30 Meadow Pointe residents and local vendors. Many of our MP1 neighbors braved the cooler weather, and enjoyed browsing through a variety of gift ideas for the coming holidays. The bounce house kept the kids happy, and the face painting table was a busy place. Thanks go out to the Meadow Pointe Community Council (sponsor of the Fair) and Clubhouse staff, for all the work involved in organizing this event.

The CDD provided the wreaths, and the rest was up to the residents and the Meadow Pointe Community Council, who started decorating the weekend after Thanksgiving. Spring Break is supposed to be a time to goof off and forget about school. But for one lucky group of children,

vacation and education will come together for Spring Break 2011. For the second year

in a row, American History teacher Damon Zassenbraker will escort a group of middle school students to Washington, DC, to take learning about history to a whole new level.

The group of 34 students and 4 chaperones will spend an action-packed 4 days visiting Smithsonian museums, the Washington monument, many of the memorials along the mall, Colonial Williamsburg, and Yorktown Battlefield. They will see such national treasures as George Washington’s uniform, Abraham Lincoln’s Top Hat, and the original Star-Spangled Banner. Sure to be a highlight of the trip is a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where 4 John Long students will participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. •

My name is Brittany Hutchinson. I am seventeen years old, live in Meadow Pointe 3 and a senior at Wiregrass

Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel. I recently had a kidney transplant on August 25th, 2010 at Tampa General Hospital. Having the kidney transplant is truly a miracle, and a gift of life. I feel as if God has given me a new

chance and lease on life. I was diagnosed with renal failure last October. It was a complete shock to my family and I. I had to change my life drastically because I had to go on dialysis every night for 9 hours. It was certainly a struggle for me because I am a teenager in High school and I love to have fun with my family and friends. Being on dialysis meant

me missing a lot of days of school because I was physically tired. It also made traveling certainly not easy for my family and I. I was also not able to hang out with friends like I usually had, this meant no more sleepovers with my girlfriends. There were many days I felt like giving up but I knew God had a purpose for me, and that purpose was to live!

I was placed on the transplant list in June of this year; Doctors told me that because of my age it would take longer for me to receive a kidney rather than a younger patient. This never weakened my faith in God. My family and friends and I continued to believe a miracle would take place in my life. Jeremiah 29:11 is a scripture from the bible that kept me growing strong, and believing in God’s word. On August 25th my family and I got a call in the early hours of the morning from my Nephrologists Dr. Panzarino. She told us that

they had a kidney for me. I felt like I was in a dream, we all did. From August 25th up until now the transplant has been nothing but a positive blessing. I wake up thanking God every day for the donor, doctors, nurses, my family, friends and for my life. It feels so awesome not to be able to be hooked up to a machine at night anymore. I feel free! Its as if the heavy load of bricks are finally lifted off of my shoulders as well as my families’. I’m able to do all that I was able to do once before. If it weren’t for my donor and her choice to donate her organs I wouldn’t be here today living such a wonderful life. This gift of life is truly remembered and forever appreciated. Psalm 118:24 is an inspirational verse for me to read from the bible every day I wake up and open my eyes. It shows me how great God is.

I don’t think people are aware of how many people are in need of an organ and/or tissue transplant. Everyday 18 people in the United States die waiting for an organ transplant. In the state of Florida 4,000 people are waiting on the organ transplant list, about 70% of these people are in need of a kidney. It is so easy for people to become registered donors! By calling (800)262-5775 or visiting www.donatelifeflorida.org you have the chance to save the many lives waiting for an organ and/or tissue transplant. Please encourage your friends, family, and co-workers to become organ and tissue donors. Let them know they can become a superhero and save many lives by giving the ultimate gift of life! v

It’s hard to believe another year is almost over. 2010 was not without challenges, but survive we did. The economy has and continues to

add complexities, and the Board of Supervisor’s and Property Manager are very sensitive to the impact it has had on those of us that live here. We continue to look for, and find ways to cut operating expenses without reducing service offerings and yet prevent large increases in each resident’s contribution. Our mantra is, and will continue to be caring for our community; cost effectively maintaining District assets to protect the investments of our residents; working hard to keep Meadow Pointe II a safe and desirable place to live.

Given the overall economic state, our District facilities have become a popular way for families to find low cost recreation. We have seen an increase in facility usage, are working to promote that usage, and expect that trend to continue. If you have suggestions to improve our low cost recreational services please contact our clubhouse. Looking forward to 2011, the year looks to be much of the same. Plans do not include projects that would add to our District’s amenities, but rather our focus will continue to be on preventative maintenance so the existing amenities continue to serve the residents of Meadow Pointe II. Many of you are witness to the roadwork currently being done in those villages where road maintenance is the responsibility of the District. This roadwork project is extremely challenging as road construction is just simply an inconvenience to all of us. These road repair and sealing projects are expected to save the district by extending the life of the present surface, allowing us to postpone the much more costly mill and resurface project. . Please be patient as we proceed to end-of-job. The more cooperation we receive, the quicker we can be done, and traffic in your village can return to normal.

Landscape and gates continue to be an area of focus. The District’s landscape suffered a great deal of damage as a result of the hard freeze early in the year. Efforts to restore the landscape continue with a focus on planting material replacement with beautiful, yet hardier species. Gate vandalism and vehicular damage has become a major expense to our residents living in gated villages. The District continues to look for ways to reduce maintenance costs, and asks that if you are a witness to abuse of these assets, that the abuse be reported it to the Pasco County Sherriff ’s office and/or the District Clubhouse personnel.

Shoreline aquatic plantings at ponds that are showing evidence of shoreline erosion was completed prior to the end of our fiscal year. This pilot program will serve to improve the quality of our ponds and reduce our maintenance costs by filtering contaminants that promote algae growth, and stabilize the shorelines in drought seasons to prevent major shoreline breaches like the one experienced in Deer Run in 2010. Going forward, we will continue to look at investing in opportunities such as these; projects that make improvements and reduce costs. As with all maintenance projects, our goal is always to complete them with as little disruption to our resident’s as possible. However, some projects simply cannot be done without inconveniencing our residents. We apologize in advance and thank you for your patients as we preserve our community so it remains a wonderful place to live.

waste Services of Florida allows six cans, bundles, or items, for pick-up on gar-

bage day. For tree/shrub waste, cut into 4 ft. lengths and bundle with twine. Cut old carpet into 4 ft. widths, roll up and tape, or use twine. Make sure anything that is put out for garbage isn’t too heavy (less than 50 lbs.) or too large. To avoid attracting animals, please cover all cans with secure lids.

The first Thursday of every month, Waste Services of Florida will pick up TVs, mat-

If you live west of Mansfield Dr, your recycling day is Wednesday. If you live east of Mansfield Dr, your recycling day is Friday. Blue Bag re-cycling takes aluminum and metal cans, glass, and plastic (#1 and #2 only) ONLY. Blue plas-tic recycling bags must be used and may be purchased at local grocery stores. Newspapers should be taken to Clubhouse’s designated dumpster for recycling.

that’s what I get asked a lot when I’m work ing on the gates within Meadow Pointe II. You have likely seen me at

your gate many times over the course of last year. Not because our gates break down often, but I actually perform preventative maintenance on the operators to keep them going. That’s when I get the question I used in the title. You may not know it, but you have a dedicated staff member that does nothing else, but tend to your gates. Part of my training was heavily focused on safety for pedestrians. There are 12 gated villages, 52 gate operators, and many accessories to take care of.

It might seem like seeing a maintenance guy at your gate every day of the week would be expensive. You may even think you are spending more money now that we are doing it in house. That is not the case. Since I am a certified gate operator installer, we get parts at cost. Those savings are passed onto the residents. You may ask, “What about my car, I heard the

gates hit someone’s car?” The gates here are tested extensively. I can say with certainty, if someone’s car made contact with our gate, it was driver error. The rectangles you see on the pavement are vehicle loops. They are wired to detectors which do just that, detect metal. Unless your car has no metal, the gates will reverse when you cross the loop. Should the detector fail, it will fail safe, meaning it will hold the gates open. If a vehicle is going too fast, when the gates are closing after another car goes through it, there’s a pretty good chance that vehicle will sustain damage. The gates can’t reverse quick enough. I tell everyone, you are driving your vehicle through a mechanical device, proceed with caution! Don’t get too used to the reliability of the gates either. You may drive through a gate somewhere else that isn’t maintained to our standards. It is always a good idea to drive carefully through them. v

newspaper recycling only. (No phonebooks or magazines). Please do not put any trash or plastic bags in the recycling dumpsters. Funds from the recycling dumpster go to Sand Pine elementary School.

The group of 34 students and 4 chaperones will spend an action-packed 4 days visiting Smithsonian museums, the Washington monument, many of the memorials along the mall, Colonial Williamsburg, and Yorktown

Battlefield. They will see such national treasures as George Washington’s uniform, Abraham Lincoln’s Top Hat, and the original Star-Spangled Banner. Sure to be a highlight of the trip is a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where 4 John Long students will participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

“Life experiences can teach the kids much more than I can ever say in a classroom,” Zassenbraker says. Seeing centuries of history up-close solidifies the lessons learned in school, and makes the age-old stories more

personal. It might inspire an interest in civics, or at the very least introduce an element of reverence for their country and its heritage. And the kids have a blast. “I love to see the responses of the kids to the new experiences.”, Zassenbraker adds. To be sure, this trip will give the kids the opportunity of a lifetime—to become personally involved in their country’s history.

wish all of the residents a safe and Happy Holiday Season. To let our associates enjoy time with there families, the clubhouse will close early on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve at 3pm. The clubhouse will be closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day. Please bring your family and visitors up to the clubhouse to enjoy all the amenities we have to offer. We have some new fitness equipment, an elliptical machine, weight bench and dumb bells up to 50lbs. The clubhouse is open 9am-9pm except

for the special holiday hours listed above. The pool is open the same hours of the clubhouse. The walking trail is beautiful this time of year with an abundance of wildlife to see.

creative Times Academy provides a fun, loving, creative environment. Their common purpose is to daily enhance

the lives of the children and families they serve. They strive to support children’s growing independence and to build confidence to achieve their full potential.

Their facility features many of the latest advanc-es in the child care industry. They have an onsite video monitoring system enabling the director and managing staff to ensure that all policies and procedures are strictly followed. The entry to the building is secured by a coded keypad, allowing only authorized people in the building. The building is almost 13,000 square feet and is set on 8 acres of property. They have several

age appropriate playgrounds for all age groups, including a covered patio area with ceiling fans and poured in place rubber flooring. They have an on-site kitchen where nutritious meals and snacks are prepared daily. Lunch and snacks are included in the tuition (exception no lunch for the ½ day Pre-K).

The school uses the High Reach Curriculum of-fering your child many opportunities to develop important skills needed to help him or her be successful in school. The school is also Apple Ac-credited and has received the Florida Gold Seal.

Creative Times Academy staff members are required to have complete Federal/Local Law background screenings before they join the team. In addition, they are required to be certi-fied in Infant and Toddler CPR and First Aid. Each classroom is staffed with a Lead Teacher and their Assistants. The Lead Teachers are required to be CDA certified.

They accept children between the ages of 6 weeks and 10 years old and they travel to Sand Pine Elementary, Seven Oaks Elementary, and Turner Elementary transporting children in their bus that is equipped with seat belts. There are several extra curricular activities (Dance, Martial Arts, and Stretch-N-Grow) on premises available for the parents to take advantage of.

when most people think of Metropolitan Ministries, tents, food, turkeys and toys come to mind. While those are a big

part of what the Ministries does for the holidays, none of it could be possible without the support of the Tampa Bay community. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, The Minis-tries constructs a 32,000 square foot red and white tent that resembles Santa’s Village. Families receive Boxes of Hope (food items for a complete holiday meal, including a turkey) and Bags of Joy (toys and stocking stuffers for children). But the Holiday Cen-ter offers families much more than food and toys.

Impact, changed lives, transformation and hope are holiday miracles that seem to unfold right before ones eyes. Through the Ministries Compassion + Action com-munity outreach initiative geared toward serving more families in more communities, the Ministries has partnered with organization across the bay area to serve families in need. The tents known as Holiday Centers, now total 9 locations in three counties--Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco, serving as a place for volunteers, donors and those receiving services to come in contact with each other. The Ministries is encourag-ing the community to collect Boxes of Hope and Bags of Joy, by challenging your friends, coworkers, school and faith groups to collect 20, 50, or 100 boxes and bags for the families the Ministries will serve this year. You won’t be able to serve all 30,000 families in need…but each

community member can make a difference in a life by feeding ONE family or providing ONE toy to a child in need. Metropolitan Ministries offers much more than holiday assistance. Since it’s inception in 1972, the Ministries has grown from a single room soup kitchen to one of America’s most innova-tive caregivers. More than half a million families have been aided by its Outreach and Prevention Services. The Ministries has also prepared over 23 million hot meals and provided over 350,000 safe haven shelter nights to the area’s homeless. More than 1,700 meals are served each day at more than

27 sites meal site partner locations across Tampa Bay. Metropolitan Ministries currently houses 40 families with 90 children. The Ministries prides itself on helping families by alleviating suffering, promoting dignity and instill-ing self-sufficiency. Metropolitan Ministries’ residential Uplift U program provides transitional housing to families and single women while providing counseling services, physical and mental health care, alcohol and drug counseling, employment services and money management training to help them on the path toward self-sufficiency. The Metropolitan Ministries’ Sanctuary at Waters Avenue, a group of 12 Sulfur Springs town homes, provides afford-able housing to Uplift U graduates while pairing them with family mentors to help residents achieve full self-sufficiency. Metropolitan Ministries Partnership School meets the educational needs of homeless and at-risk students in the Tampa Bay Area by providing one-on-one and small classroom settings. Its Youth Programs provide after-school support and activi-ties for homeless teens. Join the Ministries this holiday season and year-round in being someone’s angel. Pta Fall FestiVal

The Sand Pine Elementary School PTA held their 4th annual Fall Festival on Friday, October 22, 2010. The beautiful weather made for a fantastic evening of family fun. The entire night was filled

with smiles, laughter, and lots of excitement! Students and their families tested their skills at fall-themed games such as the Mummy Wrap, Apple Bob, Spider Darts, and Candy Corn Toss. In addition to great music provided by DJ Jay Sheridan, there were hayrides, pumpkin pie eating contests, and plenty of treats for all to enjoy. Other activities included amazing caricatures by Dave Smith and Rob Little as well as artistic face painting by Wyndy Olsen. Students took their best shot as some favorite teachers and Principal, Todd Cluff, braved the dunk tank.

The festival also included a pumpkin decorating contest, with a Toys R Us gift card awarded to Tyler Townsan for “crowd favorite.”

This event was a huge success, thanks to all of the volunteers that donated their time and energy! A special thanks to Sand Pine PTA President, Peggy D’Alessandro, for coordinating this event.

Girl Scouts of West Central Florida has some exciting programs happening in the upcoming weeks! Singing with glee Camp-In (grades 4 – 12), Jan. 15 – 16: Show us how much Girl Scouts rock! Perform in the production of a musical featuring your favorite songs and plenty of smooth dance moves. Think you can’t sing or dance? Pick up tips and tricks from a vocal coach and a dance instructor. Record a song with your friends using professional studio gear and compose original music with GarageBand and other music technology. After a night of fun and laughs, hit the stage to express your story in music form for the grand finale in the morning. Dinner and breakfast are included.

Beautiful Butterflies (grades K – 1), Jan. 22: Come celebrate the beauty of butterflies. Build a feeder, plant seeds to take home for your own butterfly garden, and learn how to help butterflies and how they help you. Marvel at the complexity of metamorphosis and meet aquatic animals that share similar life stages. College 101 (grades 6 – 12), Jan. 29: This adventure will help you explore options for higher education and mingle with college professionals and students while touring the Florida Southern College campus. Tour will include dorm rooms, classrooms, wellness center, gym, gardens and a meal in the cafeteria. Girls will top the day off by watching the Lady Mocs take on Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish! Florida Southern College is listed on the National Register of Historic places and features the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Arrive early and walk around beautiful Lake Hollingsworth or find the garden on campus with the Juliette Low marker. Adults can become involved in Girl Scouting, too! Interested in volunteering?
