From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Guardians: This past Monday, I met with our Student Senate’s officers. They are willing to take a look at how McMillen’s students, as a campus, could express, in a peaceful and positive way, their support for the memory of the students and staff who lost their lives in Parkland, Florida. The Student Senate officers want our students to feel safe and they also want them to have the opportunity to understand how their positivity not only would have an effect on our campus, but also in our community. The officers have spent their time during Lions Lunches this week discussing what would be the best approach to bring a positive and respectful program to our student body. The concept of hosting a peaceful walkout was discussed, in detail. What appeals to the Student Senate officers is sponsoring a week of remembrance entitled “The Week of Colors.” In “The Week of Colors,” all students and staff would be encouraged to wear a specific colored shirt that would be representative of overcoming tragedy, i.e., strength, peace, hope, etc. Their goal would be to relay a message of unity, safety, and advocacy. The proposal includes a culminating program of an assembly in the gymnasium. Such a program possibly would have speakers and other respective and meaningful elements in line with the purpose of honoring the memory of those who lost their lives. More details will follow, in McMillen eNews, Remind texts, and email. From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents and Guardians:

This past Monday, I met with our Student Senate’s officers. They are willing to take a look at how

McMillen’s students, as a campus, could express, in a peaceful and positive way, their support for

the memory of the students and staff who lost their lives in Parkland, Florida.

The Student Senate officers want our students to feel safe and they also want them to have the

opportunity to understand how their positivity not only would have an effect on our campus, but

also in our community.

The officers have spent their time during Lions Lunches this week discussing what would be the

best approach to bring a positive and respectful program to our student body. The concept of

hosting a peaceful walkout was discussed, in detail. What appeals to the Student Senate officers

is sponsoring a week of remembrance entitled “The Week of Colors.”

In “The Week of Colors,” all students and staff would be encouraged to wear a specific colored

shirt that would be representative of overcoming tragedy, i.e., strength, peace, hope, etc. Their

goal would be to relay a message of unity, safety, and advocacy. The proposal includes a

culminating program of an assembly in the gymnasium. Such a program possibly would have

speakers and other respective and meaningful elements in line with the purpose of honoring the

memory of those who lost their lives.

More details will follow, in McMillen eNews, Remind texts, and email. If you would like to follow

McMillen Senate to get updates on planning or offer suggestions, you can follow them on Twitter

@McMillen_Senate.

Sincerely,

Brian Lyons, Principal
