    I was working for a US-based cotton merchant in Alabama, which opened myeyes to the world of international trade,

    he explains. However on returning to Australia I needed ideas to improve ouroperations. Inevitably you become isolated

    from head office in those situations.

    I figured I would do one subject at atime, apply what I learned, and build myown toolkit. This has proven invaluable at

    Blue Sky. I felt the broad subject matter in the MBA and access to experienced individuals would be of benefit.

    Throwing myself into a group of peers made me realise I wasnt a complete idiot.

    I soon worked out a few things I was goodat, so that gave me a focus so I could playto my strengths.

    A trained microbiologist,Jamie has spent ten yearsworking in research anddevelopment. During thattime she has designed andmanaged a cancer researchlaboratory in Ohio and workedon classi ed bio-hazardresearch programs for theUS government.

    The Master of Business Administration(MBA) is a masters-level general businessdegree designed to equip graduates withsophisticated skills and knowledge acrossthe business disciplines. It is by nature

    and tradition a generalist degree.

    The Wharton Global Consulting Practicum(GCP) is a once in a lifetime chancefor MBA students to develop theirbusiness skills by collaborating with theworld-renowned Wharton School on aninternational consultancy project.

    The program brings together selected MBA students from bothWharton and UQ Business School to develop a US marketentry or expansion strategy for a paying Australasian company,which have included Lorna Jane, One Steel, GroundProbe andWAITOC.     Another project is the Yalari Horizons Leadership Camp, hostedby UQ Business School, which brings Indigenous high schoolstudents together with celebrities and business leaders to sharesuccess stories and inspire them to aim high.

    All MBA programs aim to developparticipants leadership skills. At UQBusiness School, we have developed aunique tool to provide evidence of skillsdevelopment.

    The Leadership Capability Framework is used to assess studentsskill levels at the beginning of the program and again at the end.

    The purpose of the MBA Awards is to recognise and celebratethe achievements of our top graduating MBA students each year- and to bring their talents and skills to the attention of potentialemployers. Established in 2005, the awards are presented ata gala dinner at UQs historic Customs House in Brisbane.     FLEXIBLE MBA OPTIONS

    UQ Business School has designed an MBA program that ishighly exible while also acknowledging the importance of what

    we call the cohort effect. Put simply, the cohort effect is theextra value that is generated when students can clearly identifytheir classmates and share suf cient class and study timewith them to develop the lasting relationships that are such avaluable part of any MBA experience.

    YOU CAN APPROACH STUDY IN1 OF 3 WAYS

    Accelerated program

    The accelerated program can be completed in 12 monthsand is taught in intensive blocks between early January andNovember.

    Streamlined program*

    The streamlined program can be completed in 24 monthsalongside your job and is structured to include some eveningclasses, some weekend intensive classes and some one-weekintensive mode offerings.

    Flexible program*

    If your work/personal commitments are such that you expectto need more than two years to complete, you can structureyour program to suit your needs by choosing to study in theevenings, by taking weekend intensive courses or by takingone-week intensive mode offerings.

    * Students in the Streamlined and Flexible programs have the option of also completing up to two approved courses in the one-week intensive

    Duration

    1 year full-time. 1 intake per year, in January.

    Entry requirements

    Applicants must meet the following requirements to be consideredfor entry into the MBA program:

    a. (i) hold an approved degree with a GPA of at least 4.5 on a7-point scale; OR(ii) hold the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration fromUQ with a GPA of at least 4.5 on a 7-point scale; and

    b. have completed at least three years relevant work experienceincluding at least one year at supervisory/management level,approved by the Executive Dean; and

    c. international applicants must achieve at least 6.5 overallwith no subscore less than 6.0 in the IELTS test (or equivalenttest)*; and

    d. international applicants must complete the graduatemanagement admission test (GMAT) with a minimum score of550*; and

    e. applicants may be required to attend an interview.

    A student may be required to pass a qualifying examination inbasic computing, written communication, and basic mathematicsand statistics before enrolment is approved.

    * Permanent residents will be required to sit an IELTS and/ or GMAT test iftheir prior studies were taught in an institution where English was not the

    language of instruction.

    Can I apply if I dont have a previous degree?

    Students without the equivalent of an Australian Bachelorsdegree are able to enter via the Graduate Certi cate in Business

    Administration as long as they have at least seven years relevantwork experience with at least three of those years at supervisory/management level (as approved by the Executive Dean).

    Upon successful completion of the rst four MBA courses andmeeting the GPA entry requirements, students articulate intothe Graduate Diploma in Business Administration. Successfulcompletion of the next four MBA courses and meeting the GPAentry requirements allows for entry into the MBA program tocomplete the nal four courses.

    To apply for the MBA, domestic students are required to submittheir application online via the website:

    MBA SCHOLARSHIP FULL-TIME(12 MONTH) MBA ACCELERATED

    UQ Business School is offering a number of 25% tuition-feewaiver scholarships to outstanding domestic and internationalstudents commencing the full-time (12 month) accelerated MBAprogram in January of each year.

    The scholarship is available to students who undertake their MBAstudies equivalent to full-time study as de ned by UQ BusinessSchool. This scholarship is awarded through a competitiveprocess.

    What is the scholarship?

    The scholarship will entitle the successful applicants to receivea 25% discount on their course tuition fees for the minimumnumber of units required to complete the full-time (12 month) MBAprogram unless otherwise stated.

    International students may also be eligible for an additionalreimbursement of up to AUD$3,000 to cover travel expenses.

    How to apply

    Applicants must meet each of the following conditions in order toapply for the scholarship:

    Upon successful completion of the rst four MBA courses andmeeting the GPA entry requirements, students articulate intothe Graduate Diploma in Business Administration. Successfulcompletion of the next four MBA courses and meeting the GPAentry requirements allows for entry into the MBA program tocomplete the nal four courses.

    UQ Business School is offering a fee waiver incentive to domesticstudents who complete the MBA program in 24 months asde ned by UQ Business School.

    What is the completion incentive?

    The completion incentive will entitle the successful applicantsto receive a 100% tuition fee re-imbursement for two (2) MBAcourses (excluding courses completed either cross institutionallyor through Executive Education) after the successful completionof the MBA program in 24 months. The MBA program must becompleted in 24 months.

    ACCELERATED

    The academic component of the MBA is structured so that a foundation course is followed by ve pairs of courses delivered in intensive 6 week teaching blocks and culminates in a residential capstone course.

    STREAMLINED & FLEXIBLE

    The Streamlined 24 month and Flexible part-time options includeevening classes, some weekend intensive classes and one-weekintensive mode offerings. Program structures vary depending onsemester of commencement.

    If you have chosen the Streamlined program, you will needto study an average of three courses each semester over the24 months (excluding the winter and summer semesters). Werecommend that you choose a combination of weeknight andweekend courses each semester, and if you wish to spread outyour workload you may include one or two winter and summercourses along the way.

    The Flexible program will enable you to study as few as onecourse per semester. You will have up to seven years from yoursemester of commencement to complete the MBA program.

    ACCT7804 Accounting & Business Analysis

    Accounting involves compiling and interpreting nancial information

    about an enterprise and its activities as a basis for making andevaluating economic decisions about the deployment of resources.

    A basic knowledge of accounting is important for anyoneinvolved in modern enterprises, whether they are pro t-oriented,government, or non-pro t entities.

    The aim of the course is to provide a broad understanding of theaccounting discipline to enable students to comprehend, evaluate,interpret, question, and intelligently discuss accounting information;and understand the uses, limitations, complexities and evolvingnature of accounting.

    ECON7012 Business Economics

    This course focuses on how consumption, investment, productionand supply chain choices are made in the face of problems ofinformation and knowledge. These choices need to be coordinatedto avoid wasted opportunities, even more so when individuals,

    rms, or entire economies choose to specialise.

    Adjustments in relative prices and the incentives provided by pro tsand losses play major coordinating roles. Coordination is alsoassisted by planning and social institutions. Even so, coordinationfailures can still occur, leading to major slumps in employment andinternational trade. Economics can help to assess when theseproblems are likely and how they may be dealt with.

    FINM7805 Financial Management

    This course provides students with a range of tools required forcorporate nancial decision-making and personal investing. Thecourse also develops a framework for corporate decision-makingcentred on the concept of shareholder value.

    Topics include: nancial mathematics; short-term nancialmanagement; the use and valuation of debt and equity securities;project evaluation with an emphasis on the discounted cash owtechniques of net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return(IRR); individual investing; portfolio theory and diversi cation; the

    weighted-average cost of capital (WACC); risk; and the capitalasset pricing model (CAPM).

    MGTS7801 Management Frameworks

    This foundation course introduces students to the MBA andprovides speci c areas of foundational knowledge and skills tobuild on throughout the degree program. These areas includeframeworks for understanding organisations and leadership, as wellas individual management and leadership abilities.

    Building capability begins with a thorough self-assessment, gapanalysis, and subsequent identi cation of professional goals thatcan be achieved throughout, and beyond completion ofthe program.

    MGTS7802 International Management

    International Management provides an understanding of how theeconomic, geopolitical and cultural dimensions of the internationalbusiness environment shape international business investmenttrade and transacting, and how international rms are managed inthis environment.

    Strategies for market positioning of very large rms, and smalland medium rms, in these complex environments, and the rmstructures that emerge to support these strategies, are investigatedalongside new and innovative forms of enterprise to captureinternational advantage.

    MGTS7803 Integrated Strategic Analysis

    The nal and capstone course, Integrated Strategic Analysis, isdelivered as a one week residential that integrates and extends thekey concepts from the core courses of the MBA program.

    This course allows students to analyse, synthesise and presentconclusions and recommendations on a current business case.

    MGTS7806 Relational Marketing & Communication

    This course synthesises current perspectives of marketing andcommunication theory. Students will be expected to critiquetraditional marketing management and communication thinkingwithin organisations.

    This contemporary approach aims to inform management practicebetter through a synthesis of the interplay between the disciplinesof communication and marketing. It will prepare students to thinkethically and critically about the communication and relationshipprocesses that occur in organisations between their internal andexternal stakeholders.

    MGTS7807 Operations Design

    The objective of this course is to develop students understandingof business systems and process design within diverseorganisations and to evaluate how they relate to the organisationscorporate objectives, market development, and long-term

    sustainability.

    Students will gain an understanding of the important theoreticalissues and concepts relating to the design of core businessprocesses, performance reporting mechanisms and accountability.

    MGTS7808 Services & Systems

    How do senior managers use information and communicationtechnology (ICT) systems and services to enable strategy and getmore business value out of IT? In this course we take the strategicperspective of the general manager to study how leading rmsleverage their IT investments.

    Our focus centres on IT leadership and IT governance rather thanthe more technical aspects of IT. Therefore an IT background isnot required.

    MGTS7809 Strategic Human Resources Management

    This course examines the systems and processes involvedin human resource management with the aim of improvingorganisational performance. Building on an appreciation ofthe environment in which business operates, the course aims

    to develop a deep understanding of such HR practices asrecruitment, selection and retention of staff as value addingactivities.     This course develops the skills and knowledge required to leadpeople and teams effectively in modern organisations. The coursespeci cally focuses on current theory and applied knowledge in thisarea, starting from an initial focus on the role of individual variables

The purpose of this course is to analyse theimportance and nature of innovation and how managers can leadinnovation for sustainable competitive advantage. The course isbased on robust analytical frameworks and contemporary empiricalevidence on international best practice in innovation leadership.

    CREDIT & EXEMPTIONCREDIT

    Students who have completed comparable postgraduate studymay be eligible for credit. Credit is granted on the basis ofprevious postgraduate study that is deemed to be at least 70%equivalent to UQ Business School MBA courses.

    If granted credit, students will be required to complete fewer unitstowards the MBA. Credit is not granted towards postgraduate

    study for either work experience or undergraduate study. Studentscan be awarded a maximum of up to 50% (6 courses) of theirMBA in credit.

    EXEMPTION

    Students who have completed courses in undergraduateprograms that are deemed to be at least 70% equivalent to UQBusiness School MBA courses may be granted exemptionstowards the MBA.

    Students granted exemptions must replace the exempted course

    with another course of the same unit value from courses approvedby the MBA Director. Exemptions do not reduce the number ofunits required to complete the program.

    How to apply for credit and/or exemption

    Students are required to apply for credit and/or exemptionsby completing the credit/exemption application form which isavailable for download on the myAdvisor website at http://www.uq.edu.au/myadvisor/ , or from the Student Centre, or UQBusiness School.

    Students are encouraged to apply for credit/exemption at the timeof application for the MBA program.

    To facilitate timely processing of credit/exemption requests,UQ Business School requires the following information from anapplicant:

    TOEFL and IELTS Test results are only valid for two years f rom the date of the test. Test results must stil l be valid the month your UQ degree program starts or they cannot be accepted. UQ will not accept institutional TOEFL tests, photocopies or certi ed copies of examinees TOEFL results. If you have not done so already, you must ask your TOEFL testing centre to

    send your of cial results to UQ. UQs TOEFL code is 0987. If you sat an IELTS test and you can provide an IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) number on your application form, you do not need to provide an of cial copy of your IELTS results to UQ.
