DUMB CRIMINALS

He Broke Into Where?? - You really have to wonder about this one. Why would a thief break into aCourthouse? I guess when you're drunk, your judgment is a little off, to say the least. This guy pried open •the sliding door to the Courthouse and broke into the safe in the lobby. The only problem was that it's anantique safe and there was nothing in it. It was there only for display. In fact, it wasn't locked because thelock was broken. He was caught when he again tried to pry open the door to get out. He was back insidethe same Courthouse a few hours later where he was arraigned on a charge of second degree burglary.

WHY IS IT CALLED PICKLEBALL?The sport of Pickle ball is a hybrid version of badminton, ping pong and tennis. According to theUnited States of America Pickleball Association it is the fastest growing sport in North America, and has absolutely nothing to do with pickles. In fact, Pickleball was actually named after thefamily pet ofthe inventor, in what has now become a humorous bit oftrivia.

History ofthe Game: Pickleball was invented in 1965 by Washington State congressman JoelPritchard and his friend Bill Bell. The two were at Pritchard's home in Bainbridge Island,Washington when they came up with the idea. Originally planning to play badminton, the mencould only find damaged equipment and a plastic ball. The perforated plastic ball was too heavyfor the already damaged rackets, so the men created wooden paddles to use instead. For the mostpart, the game followed badminton rules, except that the net was lowered to the ground at aheight of 36 inches.

History of the Name: Surprisingly, Pickleball is a very literal name for the game. The plasticperforated ball used for the ga!11ewas, in fact, a ball enjoyed by Pickles, CongressmanPritchard's cocker spaniel. As the family played the game, Pickles watched with great intensity.Whenever an errant shot was made, Pickles leaped at the opportunity to reclaim his possession, picking up the ball and running off with it.

Popularity with Seniors: Though Pickleball requires foot movement and hand-eyecoordination, part ofthe game's popularity in retirement communities is because it is less taxingon the body then tennis and racquetball. Pickleball courts are smaller than tennis courts andrequire far less lateral movement. When playing doubles, players have to worry only about asmall area of space to protect, rather than constantly running back and forth. The game is alsoeasy on the wrists. The lightweight whiffle ball reacts strongly offthe hard wooden paddle, meaning that only the slightest swing will hit the ball over the net, easing strain on the joints.According to Ted Robbins of National Public Radio, Pickleball has generated enough interest insenior community that many players are petitioning the sport become sanctioned by the SeniorOlympics.

So come on out to the Pickleball courts and give it a try.

Emergency Medical Services Interesting Facts

On April 6th, EMS Chief Steve Waters and his staff commanders joined the Citizen'sAcademy to present an hour filled program outlining the services the EMS team providesto the community. Some very interesting facts were shared regarding the cost ofHawthorne's EMS services and the financial effect on the community having its own firetruck.

The EMS service and fire truck ownership was included in the earliest design ofHawthorne. Colonial Penn, the 1970s developer, included both of these options, which wereconsidered a critical service for retirement residents.

Like early residents, current residents rank the EMS services as one of the most significantreasons they select a home in Hawthorne. The monthly and annual costs for that servicewere explained at the Citizen's Academy.

The cost of our EMS department, which includes the fire department, breaks down as.follows for 2017:

The annual cost to members is: $771,000.00The cost per home is 645.77The monthly cost per home is: 53.81This amounts to 18.95 % of each member's maintenance fee.

The fire truck, owned by HRCA and operated by Hawthorne's EMS employees, isuncommon in most retirement communities. Hawthorne's EMS employees are fullytrained and certified in all aspects of emergency and fire responses. Fires are not commonin the park, however Chief Waters pointed out that they do occur and, when they do, thedepartment is fully prepared to respond in a matter of minute's.

The first fire truck that Hawthorne purchased was in use for 33 years. The early 2000sbrought about the need for a replacement of the fire truck. The purchase price of the newtruck was $144,000. It requires weekly use and minimal maintenance. The truck is welloutfitted and kept in pristine shape. You are welcome to visit the fire truck stall at theMarina to inspect this prized fire protector.

Because we have our own fire department, we do not pay fire assessment to Lake County. If Hawthorne did not have its own fire department each member's home in the community

. would be assessed $175.00 per year on the Lake County property bill. This would equal atotal yearly cost for all homes of $209,000.00. Over the next twenty years (estimated life ofthe fire truck) that cost would have equaled $4,182,500.00? Remember, the fire truck costonly $144,000.00, which was a onetime cost, saving Hawthorne residents $4,038,100 overthe twenty year life of the fire truck.

Thanks to Chief Waters and his EMS team for keeping Hawthorne residents safe!

HOW FLORIDA GOT ITS NAME

Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Florida on Easter Sunday, Apr. 2, J 513 andoriginally named it "Pascua Florida". The Spanish phrase means "flowering Easter.

Juan Ponce de Leon landed on the shores of northeast Florida in April of 1513. He called thearea "la Florida" in honor of Spain's Eastertime celebration "Pascua Florida" (feast of theflowers).

He never discovered the legendary Fountain of Youth but, ifit exists, it could well be somewherein Florida. Perhaps one of the 58.9 million tourists that visited the Sunshine State in 1999 knowswhere it is?

Florida, over the years has become one of the world's strongest tourist magnets, with sun soakedbeaches and crystal springs. And with a little help from a mouse, Walt Disney World continuesto lure more visitors than any other single attraction anywhere in the world. A word of caution,

k "Watch out for alligators." Once endangered, alligators have made a strong comeback and havebecome something of a nuisance. Hold onto your small pets.

If you want to go to the moon, you'll probably have to leave from Florida. John Glenn becamethe first American in orbit when he blasted offfrom Cape Canaveral in 1962. On July 20, 1969,only seven years later, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon.

USELESS INFORMATION

Why do people in India eat such spicyfood?

Spicy food is a funny thing, either you love it or you hate it. Those of us who eat itthink it is just wonderful- 850 million Indians can't be wrong! Actually, theyaren't. There are several good reasons why Indians and other people from hotclimates eat spicy food. The favored spice of India is curry, which is really amixture of several spices, such as turmeric, cayenne, cardamom, ginger, coriander, pepper, chili, mustard seed, cumin, and cinnamon, among others. Spices can bemade bland, unappealing food taste and smell better and improve one's appetite. This, however, is just one of the reasons why people add spices to foods. There arealso other practical purposes for spice. Because spices, like curry, are "hot", theycause the body to sweat andthus help to regulate the body's temperature, makingone feel cooler. For this reason, spicy foods are very popular in India, Mexico, andother warm countries. Spices in food also help to kill some germs and aid thedigestive process.

PLEASE HA VE A SAFE AND H;EALTHY SUMMER. Come back prepared toget very busy and participate in Club Hawthorne and our 110 activities.

Remember we depend on volunteers.
