Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. New FacesNew FacesNew Faces The new Principal for Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic School is Dr. Pamela Bernards who comes to us from Knoxville, Tennessee with twenty-nine years of experience in Catholic education. A few of you may have seen her at the Fish Fry on the last Friday of Lent - she had her interview that evening. She takes up her responsibilities on July 1st but will be down to visit the school again some time soon. Meanwhile Mrs. Mary Agnew is just winding up her ninth year as our Principal. From the point of view of the parish she is especially close to the daily Mass-goers because she joins them on most school days; however, very many of

you have had children at Saint Charles in years past and know her well. The current school students and families will be thanking her in various ways but she will be at the 5:00 pm Mass on Saturday June 4th and we will have a simple reception afterwards so that we can express our gratitude to her as a parish.

On May 4th we were joined in the parish by Deacon Grzegorz Podolowski. He is a transitional deacon, receiving his final preparation for ordination to the priesthood. I was amazed to discover that there is a special seminary for Polish students in Orchard Lake outside Detroit, founded in 1885 to serve the Polish community in America. Deacon Gregory (as we may call him) came from Poland six years ago to to begin his studies there and was originally destined to serve in the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, but then had the chance to transfer to the Diocese of Orlando. He has already served for a time at

All Souls, Sanford, and Bishop Noonan has now sent him to Saint Charles for a different experience and so he can get some training in pastoral care at Florida Hospital. If we have any Poles in the congregation - and I’m sure we do - please make him especially welcome, although he is also looking for help to improve his English.

CELEBRATES 50CELEBRATES 50CELEBRATES 50THTHTH AAANNIVERSARYNNIVERSARYNNIVERSARY

This weekend Bishop John Noonan, who was installed as the fifth Bishop of Orlando on December 16th, will be at Saint Charles Borromeo to celebrate the 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday evening. The occasion of his visit is the fiftieth anniversary of our Knights of Columbus group who received its charter as Council 5150, Our Lady of the Lakes, from the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council on May 7, 1961. Jack Demetree was the first Grand Knight - and there are still members of the Demetree family in the parish. After Mass, the Bishop will join the Knights for a festive dinner.

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization. The Order was founded in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT by Father Michael J. McGivney. It was 1882, an era of anti-Catholic and ethnic discrimination in many parts of America, and Father McGivney wanted to strengthen men who were struggling to provide for their families. They named themselves “Knights” after the chivalrous fighters for Christianity in the Crusades and in honor of Christopher Columbus, the great Catholic explorer and discoverer of the New World. They pooled their funds to support widows and families of deceased members and formed a mutual benefit organization that has grown to be the twelfth largest mutual insurance company in the nation.

The first principle of the Knights of Columbus is charity and this is put this into action by supporting church activities, vocations, pro-life organizations, and the handicapped. They were among the first to provide assistance following natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti and Japan earthquakes. They also support the Pope, funding the Vatican satellite radio network and over the last 25 years, they have supported the major restoration of St. Peter’s Basilica. In Florida, the state’s 360 Councils donated $80,000 for vocations to the nine Florida Bishops, and $700,000 to local agencies through the Handicapped Citizens Campaign and K of C Charities.

There are more than 1.8 million members in 15,000 councils in the U.S., Canada, and ten other countries. Membership is limited to “practical Catholic” men, aged 18 or older - that is, members are expected to practice their faith, something evidenced by the number of Knights who have received the Order of Saint Charles over the years. Almost from the beginning our Knights supported the Sisters of St. Joseph at Morning Star School. They have been involved in developments at Bishop Moore Catholic High School and St. Charles School, in the building and remodeling of the new church, and in practically every major event in the parish. By 1964, Council 5150 occupied a small house at 713 Smith Street but the Knights had more than 200 members so in 1975 the Council purchased its current hall and property at 1908 Silver Star Road. “Swing Nite” (admission $1), fertilizer sales, and the New Year’s Eve Ball were successful social events and fundraisers, and Fish Fries and Shrimp Boils with Lombardi Seafood delicacies were legendary.

On this fiftieth anniversary we, as a parish, pray for deceased Knights and thank the present members for their continued dedication and service. I, as the current Chaplain of Council 5150, want to encourage more men to experience the brotherhood and inspiration which come from membership in the Knights. Every parish is made stronger by the presence of “practical Catholic” men, and the people of Saint Charles wish the Council every blessing for another fifty years.

Once a child reaches the “age of reason” (seven), the child is brought into the Church just as an adult is—through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Following this process of preparation which lasts about a year, the child is fully initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. In order to have a child baptized Catholic, at least one parent must be Catholic.

If you are considering having your child—age 7 or older—become Catholic, or if you have any questions, please contact Sister Marie at the parish office, 407.293.9556 ext. 121.

“He received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured him forth, as you see and hear.”

Peter bravely proclaimed it, through the Spirit,

to the city:

“Death could not hold Christ.”

We too pray to hear and feel your Spirit, O Christ,

in our neighbors, in ourselves.

Let our lives boldly proclaim it:

your life, death and your

resurrection.
