Celebrations for Local Volunteers
The Scone Neighbourhood Centre celebrated and thanked past and present volunteers at an afternoon tea on Wednesday 16th May during National Volunteer Week.Manager Lee Watts said Volunteers contribute many hours in a range of different roles at the Neighbourhood Centre and I was
pleased to be able to thank them personally last week. The Centre has been fortunate to have volunteer support since it began 25 years ago and they play a very important role in the service. Their positions differ depending on their choice of position;they may support the service as committee members, administration support or a folder of the Bush Telegraph . Every person has
their own reasons for volunteering and all bring a range of skills to their positions. I am truly grateful for all the time that volunteers have given so freely .
Volunteers are always welcome at the centre, if you would like to volunteer for a few hours or a day call in and have a chat or phone me on 6545 2562.

Tragically, Major James Mitchell, an Englishman who migrated to Australia forty years ago to follow his love of thoroughbreds and to provide his three sons, Arthur, Harry and Bill, with a better lifestyle, died in his eighties earlier this year. His death deprived him of the pleasure of seeing his son Arthur honoured for his contributions to breeding and racing by his peers at the 21st Annual Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association Awards Night at Scone on May 16, receiving the annual President’s Award.
Mind you, Arthur and his younger brother Harry brought the Major plenty of satisfaction in recent years as they developed the family’s Yarraman Park Stud, the one near Scone which he had purchased off Hall of Fame jockey George Moore in 1968, into one of Australia’s most respected breeding farms.
They have stood only two or three sires at a time, but they have included the good winners Catbird, a deceased Golden Slipper winner, and Magic Albert. At the same time they have provided breeding, rearing, spelling and pretraining for clients and earned so much respect for the quality of their yearlings they consistently achieve high prices.
At the 2006 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, they sold the three highest priced lots, including a colt for an Australian record price of $3million. In addition in 2007 they broke the Australian record for a thoroughbred when they sold a broodmare for $3.4million.
Arthur Mitchell has also made a big contribution to breeding and racing in the Hunter Valley, including serving a

He continues as vice-president of the Race Club and is also a Director of Aushorse and a key member of the Hunter Breeders Association’s committee for protection from the inroads of mining into the region.
Arthur was one of two people whose contributions in the Hunter Valley were recognised by Awards at the Hunter Breeders function. The other,The Murray Bain Service Award, a memorial to the celebrated Scone veterinarian of that name, fi ttingly this year went to a veterinarian who has carried Murray’s tradition of service.
He is Paul Adams, a senior partner in the Scone Equine Hospital with 35 years experience as a veterinarian. A graduate of the University of Melbourne, Paul worked in equine stud and racing practices in Canada, England and elsewhere in Australia before moving to Scone, where he divides his time between stud medicine and equine surgery.

Aberdeen Information Centre Given Lifeline
The Aberdeen Information Centre has been operating in the Aberdeen township since 2007 offering a range of services and projects which have proven benefi cial to the local community. Under the banner of Aberdeen Community Caring, the service has developed in many areas.
However, the Board of Community Caring fi nds it can no longer manage the Centre and has entered into an agreement with Scone Neighbourhood Centre to assume the management and operation of the Information Centre from July 1 2012.
Scone Neighbourhood Centre manager Lee Watts said “I am pleased this service can offer ongoing support to a similar community organisation. “The Scone Centre has been operating for 25 years and this is a new challenge. Our plan is to provide facilities for the residents of Aberdeen to improve their access to existing services in the area as well as to develop programs benefi cial to the township.
The Scone Neighbourhood Centre committee, staff and volunteers look forward to working with the existing staff and volunteers at the Aberdeen Information Centre from the 1st July 2012.
