May is a transition month at the station – featuring the quickening pace of special events, but also the departure of valued Ball State students working with us in class assignments.

Two immersive-learning classes feature opportunities for students at Indiana Public Radio and WIPB-TV.

Instructor Terry Heifetz has a dozen students in his NEWS 397 class.

“I have worked with IPR twice

now, and both times have been very smooth and a

positive experience,” said

Mackenzie Klahr. The students polish

their research and writing skills along with their broadcast technique.

“Natural sound and sound bites are key to a good radio story,” Klahr said. “Striving for good ambient sound will add a lot to a story, especially in radio when there are no visuals.”

She was surprised how few staffers the station has.

“It is a great example of a productive and efficient newsroom,” she said. “I really appreciate the work ethic at the station. They work hard and handle every story with care.”

Brianna Kirkham covered a double homicide in the Heifetz class. Along with her IPR updates she did a text story for the Web and a video package for NEWSLINK.

“This experience was very useful for me because it showed me how quickly a story

can develop across multiple mediums,”

she said. “It was obviously important to keep the public informed as we gathered information.”

A class I’m teaching, meanwhile, produces material for both IPR and WIPB-TV.

“The more you do, the more you learn,” senior Chris Glotzbach said of the INdIANA WEEKENd class. “I have learned a great deal, from how to operate a camera at a higher level, to how to get good answers from someone I am interviewing,” he said.

Student Joe Rushka said he enjoyed the “real-life” experiences.

“I have learned how to work with a team to shoot an interview and make sure we get our editing done on time,” he said. “I was surprised by how much on-hands experience that I received with this class.”

C.J. Allard said he liked working on material destined for broadcast, instead of just class work.

“The shoots for INdIANA WEEKENd are real-life stories with real-life subjects, deadlines, and technical struggles that only an immersive learning course could offer,” he said.

“One thing I have learned while working with the show is that you can always improve and learn from everyone you work with.”

Call the Midwife Season 4Sundays at 8 p.m. through May 17

Inspired by the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, CALL THE MIDWIFE follows the nurses, midwives and nuns from Nonnatus House, who visit the expectant mothers of Poplar, providing the poorest women with the best possible care. Barbara struggles to understand why an expectant father would put undue pressure on his wife to bear a son, and

Sister Monica Joan feels redundant as the busy midwives go about their work. The bishop’s meeting with Tom leads to an

argument between Trixie and Tom.

WIPB Public Television is proud to bring Give Local America! to the communities we serve.

Give Local America! is a 24-hour fundraising event designed to empower every person to give back to their community.

On the first Tuesday in May (May 5, 2015) we will be part of a nationwide philanthropic movement to help

strengthen the foundation of our local communities. We invite every person to join us to improve the long-term outlook of our communities and ultimately, our country, by making a donation to your favorite charity.

Please join us as we celebrate our local communities and support those organizations who work tirelessly and selflessly to keep our communities vital and strong, including WIPB-TV.
