December 1, 2009, was my one year anniversary as General Manager at Shady Canyon Golf Club! As I have previously mentioned, the fi rst two years following a

transition from a developer-owned club to a member-owned club are the most challenging. I was well aware the fi rst year at the Club was going to be eventful and complex, especially when you add the declining fi nancial status of the economy to the mix; Shady Canyon did not disappoint. As a result of the transition, the Club is undergoing numerous changes; several of them began the implementation process these past few weeks.

Fortunately, Shady Canyon is handling the transition well, not because it is a wealthy club, but because it is being governed and managed properly. Th e Board of Directors of private clubs are faced with making numerous decisions that are often not pleasant, nor are they met with overall membership approval. All decisions are made with careful consideration and are always in the best interest of the Membership at large.

One of those diffi cult decisions is the turf transition project to Bermuda Princess 77. Th e current conditions and long term eff ects make the decision to convert the most logical. In an eff ort to provide the turf with optimal growing conditions and maintain uniformity throughout the course, the closure over the summer is the soundest option.

Th e Board, the staff and I are working towards making the closure as tolerable as possible for the Membership by devising ways to reduce costs, increase member use of the Club, and maintain the staff during the closure. Th is is truly a balancing act for all concerned and is receiving the attention and due diligence it deserves.

I have received many calls and email on the proposed bylaw changes addressing the fl oat sales system and minimum transfer fee rate. Th is decision is in the hands of the Membership. With many fi rst time private club members, this topic is not of common place. It can be a little confusing, even for veterans of the private club world. Please do not hesitate to ask the questions you need answers to and encourage you to speak with me if you have concerns.

WWith the El Nino condition With the El Nino condition Wstrengthening I am hopeful that Wstrengthening I am hopeful that Wit is raining as you read this article. We have been experiencing a record breaking drought in the Southwest in the last few years. Th e result of irrigating the golf course with reclaimed water coupled with heavyclay soils has taken its toll on the health of the turf. We desperately need some leaching rain events to come our way.

Th is is the main reason for the fairway conversion project that will allow us to get away from the overseeding each fall with rye that cannot tolerate the high sodium conditions. With the new Bermuda fairways we can expect a much healthier turf with the ability to keep the invasive Poa annua grass in check. Th ere are some new herbicide products that we can apply to keep the Bermuda a pure stand of turf. Th is condition will give the fairways an improved playing surface with improved salt tolerance and cart traffi c wearability.

Th e current look and playability of the right side of #3 fairway is not what you can expect once the project is completed. Th is area is a test area and is being mowed at a higher height of cut for two reasons. First

we have kept it at the same height as the left side of the fairway for mowing simplicity. Th e side of the fairway for mowing simplicity. Th e second and more important reason is to let the new turf develop a thick stand (above and below ground stems) that can rejuvenate new plants in the spring.

Once the Princess 77 Bermuda is actively growing in the spring we will be mowing it at a lower height of cut and using plant growth regulators. Th is will tighten up the turf canopy giving an excellent level playing surface. Remember the most important reason for the change is improved turf coverage and playing condition of the fairways.

I realize that it may take some getting use to. Th e only down side is off color turf during the cold months of the year. Th e trade off is a superior playing surface during the busy golfi ng months of the year. In addition we will only be overseeding the tees, roughs and green surrounds in the fall. Th is look when the Bermuda is dormant will be stunning. I am looking forward to the project and the improvement of the fairways so our reputation as one of the top clubs in the country will continue to grow!

May all your putts be one!

Th e 2009 Ladies’ Presents’ Cup was held on Tuesday, December 22nd. Although this was the fi rst time for the event, it was very well received. Th e fi eld was comprised of eight teams of 4 (32 players). Th e format was also very challenging as it consisted of three separate competitions: six holes played as two best balls using the shamble format another six holes played as one best ball and six holes were played as a scramble format. Th e scoring for the event was also very competitive as the lowest team score was only ten shots better than the highest score. Th e winning team was Debe Brown, Robin Elliott, Christina Bak and Lisa Gibson.

Th e Men’s 2009 Highlander Member/Guest took place on Friday and Saturday, December 4th and 5th. On Friday, the fi eld was treated to wonderful weather and with the Best Ball format, the scores were very low. Th e two teams in the lead after Friday’s round were Ron McMackin and his guest Channing Tam and Bill Comrie and his guest Kris Th abit.

On Saturday, both the weather and format changed. Th e weather turned cool and windy and the format became “Scotch” Alternate Shot which is much more diffi cult. After the scores were all tallied, the Champions were crowned. Th e Gross Champions were Bill Mitchell and his guest Boyd Martin. Th e Highlander Champions were Pawan Seth and his guest Deepak Nanda.

Th e Final Ladies Guest Day of 2009 took place on Tuesday, December 1st. Th e fi eld consisted of 16 teams (72 players) and they were all treated to great weather, a wonderful golf course and a challenging format. Th e Net Champions for the day were Cindy McMackin and her guests Bonnie Martin, Suzanne Mardock and Carol McMackin. Th e Gross Champions for the day were Sherry Alexander and her guests Joyce Chung, Annie Chung and Susie Na.

Th e 2009 Couples Club Championship came to a close and although it was a little windy during the round, the fi eld was still able to produce very low scores. Th e Overall Net Champions were Debi and Rusty Brown and their score of 60 was four shots better than the fi eld. Th e Overall Gross Champions were Nicole and Eoin Middaugh and their score of even par 71 was only one shot better than the fi eld but good enough for the title. Both Couples will have their names engraved on the Perpetual Trophy and Panel. Please congratulate the Brown’s and the Middaugh’s if you see them at the Club.

The 2009 Canyon Cup match took place on Tuesday, December 8th at Shady Canyon Golf Club. Th is event matches twelve of the Shady Canyon Perpetual

Winners against twelve of the Big Canyon Perpetual Winners. Th e twelve Members from each Club are paired with another Member to make up six two-person teams. Th ese six teams played a Better Ball format with each match being worth three points. One point for winning the front nine, one point for winning the back nine and one point for winning the eighteen hole match. After the matches were all completed, Shady Canyon had won the event with a 15 to 3 total. Th e Shady Canyon team consisted of: Twyla Martin, Marie Gray, Nicole and Eoin Middaugh, Robyn and Bernard Puckett, Lou Miramontes, Randy DeLano, Steve Schulze, Carlo Moyano, Mike Noggle, and Bill Bullock. Wensman, Catering Directorat Any Age!

Wensman, Catering Directorat Any Age!Many Members choose the Club as the place to host their family birthday celebrations. From intimate dinners with a few close friends, to large celebrations, I enjoy assisting with the planning and preparation to fi nd your perfect theme. For some, I might suggest turning the Private Dining Room into a dance club. With spectacular lighting, lounge furniture, a great DJ and wonderful food the night is sure to be exciting. We have a long list of DJs and bands to recommend. Some of the DJ’s are perfect for children’s parties and come ready to entertain the children. Th is theme is perfect for sweet 16 parties and up!

Want to have a “ladies only” birthday celebration? How about a Spa Luncheon poolside? Imagine as your guests arrive they are off ered a wonderful libation. Each guest then chooses from a variety of luxurious spa treatments. (My personal favorite is the caviar facial) Chef Dominique would prepare healthy choices for lunch, while the ladies enjoy their treatments. Th is is also a fun idea for bridal luncheons.

“Still swinging at 84” was the heading of a recent birthday celebration. What could be more perfect than a golf theme, complete with a themed cake made especially for you by our pastry chef, Marilyn Robson. A video montage to share memories of a lifetime is the perfect entertainment.

Children’s parties open up a cornucopia of theme ideas. How about 20 tons of snow brought in for a sledding party? Santa and his horse drawn sleigh giving rides around the club! Perfect! Children also delight in parties on the Great Lawn; we have had pig races, water slides, obstacle courses, wild animal shows, etc. One new idea was to off er a junior golf clinic for a young boy’s birthday. Mike Davis, our Resident Teaching Professional, set everything up and each child got a chance to experience golf.

Insight into the Club’s Operation

The Town Hall Meeting, held November 22, 2009, provided the attending Members the opportunity to have their questions addressed and express concerns

in regards to the upcoming changes of the Club. While reviewing the budget for 2010, the Club’s food and beverage operation generated interest amongst the Membership. I announced the Club runs it’s food and beverage operation at a loss; since then I have received several emails and calls inquiring how or why that is; some have recommended I speak with Members who have been in the restaurant business and can help with this state of aff airs.

I appreciate the concerns and ideas. It is important to keep in mind the food and beverage operation of private clubs is not comparable to the restaurant business as most know it. Challenges presented to the Club that restaurants don’t face are as follows:

• We have a limited number of patrons, approximately 520 families.• We are open based on a schedule, not open based on demand- we remain open at all times whether business is coming in or not.• We operate a Golf Snack Bar, Pool Snack Bar, Men’s Grill, Mixed Grill

and Banquets with very limited space. Again all with 520 families to draw from.• We price food & beverage based on Member tolerance not on a fi nancial basis.• We purchase only the best products.• Th e current facilities were designed for retirees and not the average age of fi fty-

two, which we currently have, or for the number of children our Members have under the age of 18 which is in excess of 500.

Th ere are certainly steps we could take to increase use, but keep in mind for every action in one direction there is a reaction in the other direction. Th e operation cannot be all things to all Members.

I have been asked if I can run the food and beverage operation at breakeven or for a profi t. I can easily do so, at any level of profi tability directed, the Membership simply would not tolerate the changes required. Few clubs operate in the black, such as my previous club; they are able to do so as a result of pure volume of numbers and supplemental banquet business.

Your dues provide the revenue which allows you to have the dining facilities open any time you wish to use them, pay below market prices based on food and beverage costs, have a higher level of staffi ng as compared to restaurants, high end facilities, and use top of the line linens, silverware, china, glassware and furnishings.

Th ere is always room for improvements and we are open to change; but it has to be done without negatively aff ecting the overall approval rating of the Membership at large.

I hope this insight assists you in understanding our operation better. As previously mentioned, I am willing to sit down with any Member and review our operation or fi nancials.

Gingerbread House Decorating Recap

Once again, the Gingerbread House Decorating proved to be one of the most popular childrens’ events of the year. With the addition of a 4th seating, over 100 children took part in the crafts. Th e children decorated pre-made houses with colorful frosting and candy galore – much of it, we’re sure, ended up in the mouths of your hungry ones. Santa stopped by for a visit and listened to the many gift requests while posing for photos. After the houses were completed, families gathered together to enjoy a holiday inspired buff et, complete with, yes, even more holiday sweets!

Please take the time to view the photos of the event on the website and download your favorites.
