Hugh Sutherland School We hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather as much as we are. After our spring break, we are now into the final few months of school. We have witnessed our stu- dents working hard throughout the year and have enjoyed seeing the growth each and every one of them have shown. April was an exciting month in many ways Our leadership kids put on a dress-up theme week, as well as a wake-a-thon where they raised money and spent 24 hours at the school. By 7 am the next day, the kids were understandably tired. There were a lot of great events going on in our ele- mentary end as well. There was sumo wrestling at lunch, Mrs. Sadek’s grade fours put on a few very exciting and well prepared plays, as well as Mrs. Ty- ler’s grade 5 class at- tended Aggie days (they even had a great picture on the Chinooks Edge website). That’s a lot of great things going on throughout the school! In May, there will be many things happening as well. Along with the final preparations for year end assessments (PAT’s, Diplomas, classroom assess- ments, etc.) that will be going on, there are many other events . The grade 4 swimming will begin and the students will be going to the Olds pool for this. Our high school band has a trip and our grade 7/8 band students will be attend- ing a camp. Speaking of camping, our annual grade 6 camping trip to Camp Harmattan will be this month as well. The grade 4/5’s will be tak- ing a trip to Heritage Park to learn more about the history of Al- berta. Also, our school drama club will be put- ting on a production of Haphazardly Ever After on May 20/21. These students have been pre- paring for a long time for this production and we are looking forward to seeing their hard work pay off. Tickets can be purchased at the office. This is a great event for the whole community to attend. Lastly, we want to take a minute and thank all of the wonderful volun- teers in our school. Our school runs so effective- ly because of the many volunteers that assist with various things throughout our school. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities (breakfast program, canteen, reading pro- gram, etc.) and our stu- dents truly benefit be- cause of the many hours that our volun- teers put in. Thanks again for all of your hard work. Reaching exceptional levels of safety

A Message from the Superintendent

Chinook’s Edge is recognized as a provincial leader in achieving high safety standards in our school facilities, and this undivided attention to safety is practiced throughout our division every day. Chinook’s Edge is one of a small handful of school divisions which has achieved COR (Certificate of Recognition) status in Alberta. This is a direct result of the diligent attention to safety that is practiced in every classroom, at every building and on every school ground in our division. Our staff members recognize that safety is a priority, and everyone works hard to ensure we continue to meet these high standards.

This month, our division will be participating in an external audit to renew our COR certification. With the continued improvements we have seen and the full involvement from schools and staff across Chinook’s Edge, I have every confidence that our results will be successful. We are pursuing optimum safety because we care about the people in our facilities – our students, staff, parents, volunteers and guests – and this priority ensures everyone continues to thrive in our safe and caring schools.

The

Language of Friendship

A workshop for parents and daughters

and the best ways to support her through unhealthy friendships. GirlPower will give you

a new "language" for talking about friendship, helping you connect with your daughter and

open up those lines of communication.

NOTE: This workshop is best suited for girls in grade 3-6 and their parents.

Tuesday, May 12th

6:00 to 8:00 PM

Where:

Hugh Sutherland School

Carstairs, AB
