Spring is finally here! And as we say a final goodbye to a long winter we can reflect on a few of the events
that have been happening over the last few weeks and look ahead as to what is happening at Hugh Sutherland
School during a warmer and sunnier month of May!
In the area of sports, badminton has just finished up and our athletes are sharpening up their cleats as they get
set for Track and Field season. The bands have been very active participating in presentations, festivals and
trips. Many students enjoyed several opportunities to work with an Artist in Residence in our shop on wood
working lathes. The High School Leadership students have been doing a great job planning many student
activities. We are looking forward to another High School Student Success Assembly coming up in Mid-May.
Hugh Sutherland School has some exciting news, Carstairs has waited a long time, and finally… we are
getting a new gym! Plans have all been finalized, construction is set to start in May and we should have a
functional gym by the end of November, 2013.
The school has worked closely with the Town on this project and the intention is that this gym will be a
community gym used by the school and the entire Carstairs Community. The new gym facility will boast
provincial caliber sports events, excellent school fitness instruction, community events, band concerts and
theatre productions.
You have an opportunity to provide a donation for the new gym project in order to help us build a superior
facility and at the same time immortalize persons or groups of your choice within the gym structure. Please
consider one of the contribution options below and we will engrave your choice of names on an individualized
plaque on the entrance to the gym.
Individualized Platinum Plaque with your name choices $1,000.00
Individualized Gold Plaque with your name choices $500.00
Individualized Silver Plaque with your names choices $250.00
Individualized Bronze Plaque with your names choices $100.00
Please consider getting behind this very important project. We need your support!
Donations are tax deductible and a receipt will be provided. To make a donation or if you have any questions,
please come into the school or contact me by phone.
Please consider becoming actively involved with providing input into school decisions and come by the next
School Council meeting. It will be coming at the end of May, it would be great to see you there!
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at the school at 403-337-3326. As always I want
to say a big thank you to the parents, students, and school staff who all work tirelessly to make Hugh Sutherland School
the wonderful school it is.
It is very important that parents report all absences and lates to the school office at 403-337-3326

MIDDLE SCHOOL IN THE NEWS
2013/14 Urban Transportation Registrations are available May 1, 2013 and are to be returned to the school by June 1, 2013.
A fee of $130.00 for all non-funded riders including “interschool” (NEW for 13/14) must accompany the registration form.
Registrations will be accepted by the Transportation Department on a first come first served basis and will be based on the following eligibility and fee structure criteria:
Fee: $0.00 – K-4 funded riders (those living 2.4 km or more from their home to designated school
(NOTE: Stonehaven subdivision is the only urban area in Carstairs funded under the AB Transportation guidelines over 2.4 km)
Fee $130.00 - K-4 non- funded riders (includes interschool)
After September 30, 2013 and based only on availability on the buses currently servicing shuttle service the following MAY be considered (first come first served):
Fee $130.00 - 5-12 non-funded riders (includes interschool)
I hope that everyone enjoyed a fine Spring
Break and that all of you are rejuvenated and
ready to tackle the home stretch with vigour! A
relaxing break is always a fine reminder to us all
of the importance of balance between school/
work, activities, exercise, and rest and
relaxation.
One of the May activities which is taking place in
the Middle School is the Spell-a-thon
fund-raiser for our new gym project. Each
student will be given a list of 50-60 words which
are taken directly from their grade curriculum.
Students will study and practice their words and
collect pledges, either a per word spelled
correctly or a lump sum, and then on Spelling
Day, all of the MS students will take the test.
Students will receive an entry form for great
prize draws, for each $10 of pledges they
collect. The fund-raiser will wrap up with an
assembly recognizing the top spellers and fund-
raisers, prize draws, and maybe even a surprise
or two. Volunteers are needed to help with this
campaign: if you can spare just a little time and
energy, your help and support would be greatly
appreciated! Let me know if you can help out via
phone or e-mail ASAP. Look for dates and details
coming out to you next week.
Some other exciting events taking place in the
month of May are: Aboriginal Dance Troupe May
2nd in the West Gym at 1:30, CES grades 3 and 4
have been invited, Denim Day, May 14, which
raises awareness and funds for the CURE
Foundation (breast cancer), Hoops Kick Off
(formerly Jump Rope For Heart) will be on May
21st, and May 30th will be an Orientation Day and
associated activities with the Grades 3 and 4
students from CES. May is definitely shaping up
to be a busy month!
Wishing you all a warm, well-balanced, and
productive May!

Exceptional safety standards
A Message from the Superintendent
Chinook’s Edge is a provincial leader in meeting
high safety standards in our school facilities, and
the exceptional attention to safety is practiced
throughout the division every day. Each school
has a safety plan, a written security plan and a
required number of staff trained in First Aid.
From practicing fire drills to providing training in
Digital Citizenship so that our students can
remain safe on the Internet, Chinook’s Edge has
made safety a priority in each of our schools.
Chinook’s Edge remains one of only a handful of
school divisions which has achieved COR
(Certificate of Recognition) status. This is a
testament to the diligent attention to safety which
is practiced in all of our classrooms, all of our
buildings and all of our grounds each day. We
have worked to share the results of our planning
and expertise with other school divisions to
assist in enhancing the level of safety in those
schools, as well. We are pursuing optimum
safety because we care about the people in our
facilities – our students, staff, parents, volunteers
and guests – and this priority ensures everyone
continues to thrive in our safe and caring school
communities.
