MAY 2014

May – A Month of Celebration and New Beginnings

May is one of the busiest months in the College of Nursing. Final examina-tions, course completions and closeouts, research proposal submissions, clinic visits, Nurses Week celebrations, and of course -- graduation. This May, we will launch 230 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral prepared nurses into the workforce in South Carolina and beyond. Our graduates have demon-strated basic competencies and knowledge expected of a novice nurse, nurse practitioner, and/or nurse scientist. However we recognize that their journey as a life-long learner, a thought leader, an advocate, and a pioneer in this era of health reform is just beginning. Their character, integrity, ethics, honor, and passion will be a shining light on the incredible journey ahead. Our Gamecock Nursing “Village” expects great things from all of our students and alumni and, together, will support each other in every possible way.

My challenge to our graduates: Go forth, set audacious goals, and then make them happen -- for yourself, your patients and populations you serve, and your noble profession of nursing. We hope to see all of our alumni at the 50th An-nual Viana McCown Alumni Event on October 17, 2014 . More to details to come soon……. but go ahead and save the date and plan to join us.

While taking Health Policy and Politics this semester with Dr. Stephanie Bur-gess, I completed intern hours at the South Carolina State House shadowing House Representative, James E. Smith, District 72. I met several other House Members including The Speaker of the House, Mr. Bobby Harrell. Sue ScallyEach year in May we pause to remember Dr. Sue Lingo Scally. Sue played a key role in es-tablishing the Certificate of Graduate Study in Gerontology Program at USC. The program is an interdisciplinary certificate program and ad-dresses the needs of community professionals and full- and part-time students who are either currently engaged in planning, administration, and provision of services for older adults, or who have an interest in pursuing this work. The

Christy DeGregory, Ruth Seigler, Terri Whirrett, Calvert Klopp, Barbara Kelley, Keller Barron, Monica Cromer and Caryn Little. Committee members not shown Kay Mitchell, Mary Bundrick and Katherine Leith.

program was established for students earning their master’s or doctoral degrees in one or more of the Health Sciences or related disciplines to prepare them for career paths in the expanding fields of gerontology and geriatrics.

A Committee of friends, along with Sue’s husband Billy Scally and Sue’s family, established the scholarship to remember her life of com-mitment for advocacy and leadership in Eldercare Policy and Pro-grams. Sue’s scholarship will provide stipends to one or more students selected from the USC Health Sciences disciplines -- College of Nurs-ing, College of Social Work, Arnold School of Public Health, School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy -- or related disciplines such as HRT-food management, etc. who are interested in enrolling in the Certificate program.

You can make the difference with your gift as we reach the goal to fully fund The Sue Lingo Scally Endowed Fellowship Fund. By making a one-time or on-going annual gift/pledge, you can help ensure that Sue’s legacy lives on in new leaders who are making a difference.

We are pushing to the end of the goal of $25,000. To date gifts/pledg-es total $13,573, and with a final push you can help assure that Sue’s life is honored in perpetuity. Her scholarship fund has a ripple effect, impacting not only those who completes the Certificate of Graduate Study in Gerontology Program, but those whose lives they, in turn, make better.

2014 Nursing Leadership SummitSponsored by the SC OVOP

Future of Nursing Action CoalitionJune 2 & 3 – Hilton Head Island, SC

The SC Center for Nursing Leadership (housed at the USC College of Nursing) and the SCHA are co-leaders of the SC Action Coalition (AC) and want to invite you to join a select group of your colleagues at the 2014 Nursing Leadership Sum-mit. This special meeting will be held at the Sonesta Hotel on Hilton Head Island, SC., and will feature three national speak-ers who will help our AC move the work of the IOM Future of Nursing Report forward – Dr. Sue Hassmiller, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Senior Advisor for Nursing; Dr. Mau-reen Sroczynski, President, Fairly Associates and Consultant to the Center to Champion Nursing in America; and Mr. Wil-liam “Bill” Lecher, President of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing, and Senior Clinical Director at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Nurse leaders will convene on June 2nd for an afternoon of focused work on two issues:◆ Establishing a model for educational progression to move our BSN workforce toward the 80% level by 2020; and◆ Developing three leadership programs to prepare our nursing workforce for current and future leadership opportunities.

On June 3rd, our speakers will address the following:◆ Dr. Hassmiller – “The Future of Nursing: Perspective & Put-ting It Into Action”◆ Dr. Sroczynski – “Creativity & Connections: Building a Framework for Nursing Education & Practice”◆ Mr. Lecher – “Moving Diversity in Nursing from Planning Toward Action”

Additionally on June 3rd, our colleagues from the Georgia Fu-ture of Nursing Action Coalition will join us and give an update on their work. It will be excellent for the two states to compare notes and perhaps develop collaborative work along the way.

We want to encourage education/service associates to attend these sessions if at all possible, as it is through these partner-ships that the National Campaign for Action will have success-ful outcomes. We would also like students to come and have a special registration fee to make that affordable. Costs for the meeting – other than meals and hotel rooms – will be covered by the SC Action Coalition through the support of our RWJF State Implementation Program grant and the generous match-ing funds from our SIP grant donors.
