SNA members Martin Mrazeck, A’naya John-son, Christine Kent, Chasity McCray, Allie Barilla, Erin Forward, and Stephanie Carl, participated in USC’s 13th annual Relay for Life which raised $164,136.42 for the American Cancer Society.

Lauren Arens, Allie Barilla, Alex Hardin and Jamie Lawson represented the College of Nursing at the National Student Nursing As-sociation Convention in Phoenix, Arizona. The convention allowed members to serve as delegates with the opportunity to vote on current legislation, participate in leadership workshops and NCLEX review ses-sions as well as network with nursing leaders. USC delegates continued to spread the word about the need for carbon monoxide education.

CSL Lab Director, Erin McKinney, demonstrates the labor and delivery simulator for a group of visiting students from the Lutheran University of Applied Sciences in Nurem-berg, Germany. The students visited the United States for 10 days getting to know the ins and outs of the CON and our healthcare system. Last year, students from the College of Nursing went to Germany to learn about nursing programs and technology abroad.

Senna Desjardins will begin her nursing ca-reer in Rochester, Minnesota this July at Mayo Clinic in the Cardiac Surgery and Transplant ICU.

USCL held their annual Lamp Lighting Ceremony honoring their May 2015 BSN graduates.

Senior, Allie Kraybill, was a meme-br of the USC the equestrian team, leaving with 3 SEC championships and 1 national championship.

She is a Leadership Studies minor, went on the inaugural trip to Nuremberg, Germany, presented at the CON re-search day and be working at the Mayo Clinic on a Cardiovascular Surgery PCU. Allie said, “As a 5th year on the Eques-trian team, I served more as an assistant or student coach, with the girls calling me “Coach K.” Our running joke was did I really have 1000 wins? Truth be told, it is the quality of the win and not the quantity. Being able to be a part of a National Championship team is a once in a lifetime – watching years of hard work finally payoff is priceless.” “‘Every experience, no matter how bad it seems, holds within it a blessing of some kind. The goal is to find it. -Bud-dha’ I have this quote hanging on my wall. Nursing school has been a journey which I never imagined. I have seen my highest moments and I have definitely had my fair shares of lows. Regardless, I would not have traded my experi-ence here at Carolina, and in College of Nursing, for anything,” she stated.

Barbara grew up in Charlotte, NC, graduating from USC in 1968 with a BS Degree in Nursing. With an interest in pediatrics and public health, she spent most of her career in public school nursing, serving as a liaison between school and families.

She met her husband, Earl, at Carolina and has been married for 46 years with two married daughters and four grandchildren all living in SC, who are also Gamecock fans.

She enjoys her grandchildren, outdoor activities, travel and church work. Her nursing education prepared her for the different roles in her life as wife, mother, caregiver and community volunteer.

Earl graduated from USC in 1967 with a BA Degree in History from the College of Arts and Science. He attended USC on a Basketball Scholarship. He worked in public education as a teacher, coach, as-sistant principal and principal for the next 42 years. After working 36 years in South Carolina he returned to Kingsport, TN and served as principal at his alma mater, Dobyns-Bennett High School until retire-ment.

Both are now retired and spend all the time they can participating in activities with their families and trying to be role models for them. They also enjoy traveling and seeing as much of the country as possible. The photo above is at Denali National Park in Alaska last year with Mt. McKinley in the background.

Earl stated, “I wanted to establish this scholarship in Barbara’s name because she is the most caring person I know. She would not agree to that so we are establishing this scholarship in both names because we believe so strongly in caregivers and what they do. We saw first-hand the loving care given to our parents.” They often talk about their Carolina experiences and enjoy returning to USC and renewing acquaintances and reminiscing about their time there. They are excited about a possible move back to South Carolina in the future.

Research Spotlight: Ronit Elk, PhD, Research Associate Professor

Palliative care (PC) programs have been proven to reduce symptoms, alleviate suffering, enhance care delivery and result in family satisfaction. Unfortunately, there are no PC pro-grams in rural South Carolina. Culturally-tailored PC programs are critical in ensuring the unique needs of African American (AA) and White (W) elders are met. However, to date, there are no culturally-tailored PC programs for any rural elders in the US.

Dr. Ronit Elk’s study will address this gap through her NIH-funded R21 entitled, Com-munity-Generated Palliative Care Telemedicine for Rural Black and White Elders. This study is conducted in partnership with AA and W community members, and is the first to use Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) to design a culturally-tailored PC program tailored to both AA and W rural elders at end of life. A Community Advisory Group (CAG) guides each of the 3 study phases. In Phase 1: separate focus groups were conducted with AA and W family members whose loved one recently died. In Phase 2, a

yearlong process, the CAG reviews focus groups’ results, determines implications for the PC Consult program, and devel-ops the study protocol. Phase 3: The culturally tailored PC Consult program will be delivered via telemedicine in Beaufort Memorial Hospital later this year.

Dr. Elk has been an Reviewer for NIH Risk, Prevention, and Health Behavior Small Business Innovation Research Panel, a 2015 Panel Member for NIH, National Institute of Aging (NIA-S) Review Panel, an American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Diversity Advisory Group Committee member (2015-2017), a Guest Editor in Chief of a special issue of the Journal of Palliative Medicine on End of Life Care for African Americans and a Guest Editor for a special issue of the journal LGBT Health on LGBT and Cancer.
