The end of the
school year is, yet again,
quickly approaching. Wow!
Where does the time go? It
has been a very busy year
with construction. The entire
school community has done a
great job remaining flexible
throughout the construction.
The kids have been especially
flexible and positive. They
have been excited throughout
the entire process and they
just keep moving forward
without missing a beat. I am
so proud of our students!
Deconstruction of
the old building began this
week. As a matter of fact,
they are deconstructing right
now as I am writing this mes-
sage! The project should be
finished up sometime in June
and we should be in full swing
for the start of next school
year. We will still have open
house in the summer for stu-
dents to meet their new
teachers. We will also have
open houses for the commu-
nity to view the new school
when it is 100% complete.
For those of you who
were able to make it to the
Spaghetti Dinner, you got a
glimpse of how beautiful the
new school is. You have an-
other chance to check out the
new auditorium at the spring
concert on May 3rd.
Thank you all for
your flexibility and support the
past two years. It is challeng-
ing to run school through a
construction project. I am
truly thankful to work with
such a fine community! You
are the best!
Sincerely,
Edward L. Gnall
Principal

We enjoyed Sec-
retary’s Day very much.
The day began with a
breakfast for all teach-
ers and staff. Cards,
flowers, and gifts arrived
in our office throughout
the day. It is always
enlightening to read our
job descriptions from
the students’ points of
view! From our perspec-
tive…...working in the
school office is one of
the best jobs to have!
Thank you, faculty, staff,
students and parents!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Miller and
Mrs. Wolf
Look closely…………….who is the operator?
The grounds of
the school are still under
construction; this allows us
no space to safely conduct
field day on our school
grounds.
Field Day has
been rescheduled from
June 1 to June 5. We will
hold our field day jointly
with Nye Elementary at the
Nye school grounds. Mrs.
Krulock will coordinate the
combined activities.
Transportation by
Lower Dauphin buses will
be arranged. Our AM kin-
dergartners will be staying
for the whole day so they
can also attend the field
day activities and an as-
sembly program in the af-
ternoon at Conewago.
More information about
lunches and opportunities
for parent volunteers will
be coming home in the
coming weeks.
Crazy George will
be with us for the after-
noon assembly at Cone-
wago on field day. He is
one of America’s top bas-
ketball entertainers and
makes hundreds of ap-
pearances each year to
help kids focus on their
strengths and never give

helpers did a great job with the food.
Spring 2012 has been an exception-ally busy time. Our 5th grade students worked hard on the Spaghetti Dinner Theatre. Mrs. Weimer and Miss O’Donnell worked with them for several weeks. Mrs. Marianne DeNotaris and her
Race for Educa-tion has been an adven-ture for all…...students, parents, teachers, par-ent volunteers and es-pecially Mr. Piermattei and Mrs. DeNotaris.
Mrs. Jolene Berry and Mrs. Michelle Angerer have done an outstanding job on the 11-12 class book.

1. Sneakers are the
most appropriate footwear
for recess and physical
education classes. Open-
toed shoes invite scrapes
from the macadam. Shoes
with proper support and
coverage help prevent foot
and ankle injuries.
2. Flip-flops should
not be worn to school due
to safety on the play-
ground.
I appreciate your
cooperation in helping us
maintain a safe atmos-
phere for the remainder of
the school year.
During the warmer
months of school, children
often like to wear footwear
that is more comfortable
when it is hot, but is not
always safe for school.
Please read the following
guidelines and help us
keep your child/children
safe at school.

the

site. How-
ever,
some of
the bricks
are going
to be
saved,
cleaned
and sold
by the
Conewago
PTO as a school fundraiser.
We’ll have more details about
that at the start of next school
year.
Project Manager Rick Martz
expects the deconstruction to
continue through mid-June.
Then it’ll be time for finishing
touches on the grounds with
planting of grass, shrubbery and
trees.
We’ll also complete the new
parking area over the summer.
In the fall, parent drop-off and
pick-ups will be handled in the
area where the existing school
wing is located and bus drop-off
Now that all students and staff
are moved into the new
Conewago Elementary School
building, workers can begin to
“deconstruct” the old school
wing that was built in the
1950s.
We call this “deconstruction”
rather than “demolition”
because as part of the program
to obtain Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design
(LEED) certification, greater
care must be taken in
disposing of the materials. In a
non-LEEDs project, crews
would come in with bulldozers
and simply knock down the
building, scoop up the debris
and dump it into a landfill.
Since the district is going for
LEEDs Silver Certification, that
process is much different.
The construction workers will
recycle the copper pipes and
wires in the school. The steel
girders in the school will be
recycled. Even the bricks and
masonry walls will find a new
use – as land fill material on
and pick-up will take place in the
traffic circle that we’re currently
using for both.
“It’s an exciting time,” said Mr.
Gnall, school principal. “We’re in
the home stretch and we’re all
looking forward to not seeing
yellow construction vehicles
outside our windows.
“I want to thank the staff,
students and parents here at
Conewago Elementary School for
bearing with us during this
construction project. I’m been
very impressed with everyone’s
flexibility and understanding.”
