Let’s call it: Standardization through Consolidation! While Skype was already working on improving interoperability through their “Plugged Into Skype” program which launched recently connecting Skype with the LifeSize Passport, this growing interoperability should accelerate through the entire Microsoft line up: Expect Lync/OCS, mobile devices, Microsoft Outlook and even the Xbox to soon be: Plugged into Skype! Dear Subscribers,

Happy Spring! We have two major stories so far this month: Microsoft buying Skype for $8.5 Billion and Telepresence Options launching the industry’s first magazine dedicated to telepresence and effective visual collaboration. Since I am obviously self-interested I will start with the launch of Telepresence Options Magazine first.

Telepresence Options Magazine & The Telepresence Options 2011 YearbookWe officially launched Telepresence Options Magazine this month and published the Telepresence Options 2011 Yearbook printed upside down, and backwards in the hard copy so you can read from either direction. The 2011 Yearbook is the most comprehensive overview of the telepresence marketplace ever assembled: Profiles of 22 different companies, detailed one-page “Snapshots” of 37 different solutions, and 45 shorter entries from the Telepresence and Videoconferencing Catalog. The yearbook includes: Telepresence environments, podiums, stages, videoconferencing, executive systems, managed service providers, internetworking solutions, and exchange offerings. Microsoft’s Acquisition of Skype$8.5 Billion! Wow! My thoughts: 1. Microsoft acknowledges the value of visual collaboration in a big way and the value of the other visual collaboration market participants rises simultaneously. 2. What did MSFT buy? Core Asset: Skype’s installed base of 560 million users who are actively using Skype and the directory that connects them all. I have a separate PC dedicated to visual collaboration that has over a half dozen video soft-clients installed including: LifeSize Desktop, RADVISION Scopia, Vidyo, High Speed Video, Logitech Vid, and others. While virtually every other video client I own offers dramatically better video, Skype is the only one that is on my “production laptop” and open/on almost continuously because I use it for telephony and messaging with colleagues, clients and friends who have it on for the exact same reason. That’s powerful! 3. This acquisition will accelerate interoperability. In the 2011 Yearbook I discuss the top trends for visual collaboration in 2011. One of the trends that I identify is the growing interoperability of visual collaboration systems and platforms and one of the specific drivers that I discuss is merger and acquisition where I used Cisco’s acquisition of TANDBERG as an example. Microsoft to Acquire Skype

By ANUPREETA DAS And NICK WINGFIELD, via WSJ.com

Microsoft Corp. agreed to buy Internet phone company Skype Technologies SA for $8.5 billion in cash--the most aggressive move yet by Microsoft to play in the increasingly converged worlds of communication, information and entertainment.

WSJ's Andrew LaVallee has details behind Microsoft's $8.5 billion cash purchase of Skype.

Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, and Skype Chief Executive Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Microsoft Skype Division, reporting directly to Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer. Continue reading...

Biggest US airlines have combined 1Q loss over $1B

by Joshua Freed and David Koenig, via Yahoo! News

With fresh red ink at Delta and US Airways, the five biggest U.S. airlines showed a combined loss of more than $1 billion for the first quarter. Soaring jet fuel prices are the big culprit. The total loss was only about $100 million larger than a year ago, even though jet fuel spending jumped by 28 percent, nearly $1.9 billion. Airlines were able to narrow the difference in fuel spending with a 12 percent increase in revenue. They have raised fares seven times since the start of the year and would like to keep doing that to offset higher fuel costs. Vu Telepresence and Managed Services: Reality Check

Here is an article from Joe Panettieri from MSP Mentor that announces some stellar sales numbers for visual collaboration upstart Vu Telepresence. The company which makes a high-quality, low-cost HD videoconferencing end-point which the company leases for a small down payment and a monthly cost of $74.99 with a 50" display or $109.99 per month with a 60" display, announced that they have sold 5,000 units to 2,000 end-customers since they launched in October of 2010. CEO Akash Saraf, in the interview, discloses that the company will be coming out with a higher-end telepresence endpoint in the $40,000-$50,000 range that will be ready for demonstrations later this year. Blue Jeans Network Bridges Skype, SIP, H.323 for Multipoint Telepresence Solution

by Tom Keating, via TMC's VoIP and Gadgets Blog

Blue Jeans Network has been quietly developing a new cloud-based video conferencing and collaboration service that bridges H.323 and SIP end-points, PSTN -- and even Skype, with the goal of allowing users to connect everything from high-end video telepresence systems like Tandberg/Cisco and Lifesize to web cams running Skype to desktop IP videophones from Polycom, Grandstream, Cisco, and others. This solves a major problem with video conferencing and telepresence since interoperability, while it has improved, still doesn't take into account legacy H.323 end-points or users that only have inexpensive webcams. Blue Jeans Network plans to support Google and Microsoft Lync as well. Their cloud-based service handles the transcoding of audio and video codecs as well as manages the meeting IDs, PINs, etc. The web portal also grants moderators the ability to mute individual participants, all participants, as well as turn off their video.

Avay Hires Cisco Telepresence ExecVia No Jitter

Avaya's Flare Experience user interface can do a lot of cool things, and now we know it can transport human beings from one place to another. Specifically, it moved Phil Graham from Cisco to Avaya.

In another sign that Avaya wants to be seen as a serious innovator in Unified Communications, the formerly-staid vendor this week hired Graham away from his position as the point person behind Cisco Telepresence, and put him in charge of all endpoints for Avaya. And in an interview yesterday, Graham told me that Flare was a signal that Avaya meant to break new ground in the communications future.

"I think that's why I'm here, frankly," Graham said, calling Flare a "very interesting paradigm of mixing information with applications. And then at the

center of that experience is communications." Continue Reading

MIT Demos Glasses-Free Portable 3DVia KURZWEIL

A fundamentally new approach to glasses-free 3-D, called HR3D, could double the battery life of devices like Nintendo's 3DS portable gaming system without compromising screen brightness or resolution, researchers from MIT's Media Lab have shown.

The 3DS relies on a century-old technology known as a parallax barrier. Like most 3-D technologies, this one requires two

versions of the same image, one tailored to the left eye and one to the right. The two images are sliced into vertical segments and interleaved on a single surface.

By itself, the composite image looks like an incoherent jumble. But if you place a screen with vertical slits in it -- the parallax barrier -- just in front of the image and stand the right distance away, a 3-D image pops out.

Polycom Introduces EagleEye CameraVia Netforecast

One of the primary reasons that Telepresence suites work so well is that users sit and face the video screen, with only one or a few people in front of each screen. Traditional video conferencing rooms put a whole table of people in front of the screen, so users on the far end often can't see participants well.

Many rooms put the video system at the end of a long conference room table, making it even harder to see who is who and who is talking.

Desktop video conferencing, like telepresence, puts just one person in front of the screen, often just head and shoulders, which allows viewers to see the most important visual communications components,

the eyes and face. Continue Reading

The Virtual Doctor is In: Robots in HospitalsVia ISPR

At Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco, Wash., when arriving patients show signs of a stroke, a key member of their medical team is ... a tall flat-panel screen.

Actually, the screen is attached atop a 6-foot device, a robot that functions mostly as a mobile videoconferencing system.

Telemedicine is moving into the telepresence-robot era, with devices that roll on wheels and are controlled remotely, so hospitals can contact stroke, or other, specialists based hundreds or thousands of miles away.

The Struggle to Spread the Minority Report InterfaceVia ISPR

In the 2002 film Minority Report, Tom Cruise's cop of the future made use of a mind-blowing computer interface--a holographic wall of images and data floating before him, which Cruise manipulated by donning special gloves and making sweeping gestures to call up, move, zoom, combine, and discard far more information than fits on any PC screen, far more quickly. Few moviegoers realized this wasn't a

special-effects fantasy. It was a working system called gspeak, then under development by MIT Media Lab researcher John Underkoffler. Continue Reading
