tion and goal. Dr. Fontana is Director of Catholic

Liturgical Roles for May 2012
From the Pastor’s Desk
Long ago and far away, back in the days when I was in college, a Benedictine monk by the name of Fr. Dominic taught
me a lesson about the paschal mystery. I was singing in the college choir, and we were learning a new piece to sing on Good Fri-
day. A number of us were not happy campers. We thought it was too happy for that dreadful day. It sang about victory, and we
all knew that victory didn’t come until Easter Sunday morning, right? We had read the book, and we knew the story, right? Only
we didn’t. What Fr. Dominic taught me was that already on Good Friday, victory had already been won. Precisely in his surrender
to the powers of this world, Christ had conquered all of them, already. Full revelation of that fact would not come until the women uncovered the truth about the empty tomb, but Christ had conquered and glory was achieved.
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, and once more our God shows himself to be unpredictable. Jesus
had left them, for three long days of distress and despair, but then he was back. He showed up in the upper room, displaying
wounds and eating fish. So now he’s here to stay, right? We won’t have to go through all that again, right? Wrong.
Jesus presence in that earliest of churches was once more only for a time, 40 days or so. Then the time came (as he had
said), for him to return to the Father. While the first time, they saw him lifted up on the cross, this time, they watch as he is lifted
up into heaven. He’s gone. Again.
Well, not really. Remember our God is unpredictable. He’s gone, but he’s here. He sits in glory at the right hand of the
Father, and he dwells in our midst, in our hearts. Now we all know that nobody can do that – be in two places at once. But then
again, Jesus isn’t nobody. He is the ultimate Somebody. He can do as he pleases. How blest we are that it pleases him to remain in
our midst, even as he reigns over the universe. There was glory that day, and amazement, and wonder, and awe. Gone was the despair and distress of the first time Jesus
was taken from the disciples. They had learned something. It was precisely by letting go of Jesus that they would hold on to
him. They didn’t need to grasp and cling to him. As a matter of fact, nothing – not even death – could separate them from the love
of Christ.
The Ascension is a celebration of victory. It is a victory of God’s love. And it is the same victory that was won on that
sunless afternoon when Christ handed his spirit over to the Father. The Risen and Ascended Christ is the Crucified Christ. Thank
you, Fr. Dominic.
