ADITYA PRAKASH

Aditya Prakash, was an architect, painter, academic and published author. He belonged to the first generation of Indian Modernists closely associated with Chandigarh and the developmentalist practices of postcolonial India under Jawaharlal Nehru.

Initially intended to be a simple variation of Le Corbusier’s School

of Art, this building ultimately was subtly reinterpreted by Ad-

itya Prakash to accommodate its smaller budget per square foot as

compared to that of its model. Rather than eliminate the program,

Prakash choose to economise by using the Modulor to scale the

building down. In the process, he also revised the Modulor dimen-

sions to fit the Indian brick size. While the basic section and the

rhythm of the piers of the two buildings are the same, the plan and

overall character of the College of Architecture feels quite different

because of its rescaling. The final curve of the studio beams is also

quite different. The entrance corridor, the big courtyard, the mas-

sive beams, and the detailing of the front brise-soleil façade are all

worth paying close attention to. The library addition in the back by

S.S. Bhatti is also quite remarkable.

EHe worked with Louis Kahn in Philadelphia (USA). He devoted his life to see the completion of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, which Kahn did not live to see completed. For over thirty years he has taught at the CEPT University (Ahmedabad) and was a visiting professor at many universities in America and Europe.

Is an exponent of the Indian vernacular. He often turns to ancient Indi-an cities and townships like Fatehpur Sikri for inspiration, as in his Asian games village or the National Institute for Immunology’s campus. Rewal of-ten builds with sandstone and brick, even going so far as to use glass bricks to permit gentle light.

IHe worked with modernist and contemporary giants, Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. Doshi retains that modernist edge but with a distinct Indian spirit. Sangath, his office, is a modernist yet earthy idyll, with soothing white vaults and free-standing pots set against lush green lawns.

A At the frontier of contemporary Indian architecture, he is very adept at sen-sitively meeting needs and preserving history. In his projects we find Indian values, for connecting pathways and history, abide deeply in his work, even without apparent reference.

DEHe worked with modernist Walter Gropius, dealt in proportional geometry, economical shapes, steel frames and reinforced concrete. His work pro-vides ample practicality in the Indian climate and expresses social change.

EINWas an American architect and a major figure in the establishment of a regional modern architecture in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1940s. In 1952 he moved to India where he designed several important buildings, most notably in Delhi.

Was an Englishman who had a deep respect for the understanding of spac-es stored in Indian architectural methods. Because of his value for ver-nacular, organic and sustainable architecture, he made use of traditional techniques and materials whilst also devising new ones.

ELKnown among prominent Indian architects in the post-independence era along with Ch. Correa, and others. He was also a key figure in reviving inter-est and mobilizing support for the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Proj-ect in 1970s and for constituting Riverfront Development Group.

Is an American-Indian architect and planner. He innovated the concept of Site and Services, an approach to housing providing access to shelter. His best known works are a cluster of academic and educational campuses in the region between Mumbai and Pune.
