New Year’s Greeting

Happy New Year, everyone! At the beginning of this New Year, I would like to extend my best regards to you all.

Last year again, following the year before, Japan, as well as many other countries in the world, was struck with multiple nat-ural disasters. I would like to convey my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives through those disasters and express my sympathy to everyone affected. In addition, we must never forget that armed conflicts and terror attacks as well as severe starvation is making it difficult to live, and lives are being lost every day. Last September I had an opportunity to make an official visit to the temples of the Buddhist Churches of America as Monshu for the first time. This allowed me to complete the first round of visitations to all of the overseas districts which include Canada, Hawaii, South America, and the US mainland. Although every temple and district has its own history and background, many of the overseas Jodo Shinshu temples were established and have been cherished by the Japanese immigrants and their descendants. Reflecting on how sincerely our predecessors entrusted themselves to the Buddha Dharma and how importantly they thought of their temples while facing many difficulties such as World War II, I cannot help but feel grateful and even awe for their tremendous efforts as well as many other wondrous circumstances that have allowed the Jodo Shinshu teaching to be handed down to us today. However, a considerable amount of time has passed since the Japanese emigrated over-seas, and the lifestyle of their descendants, as well as the world situation have changed greatly. In accordance with these changes, quite a few people who are not of ethnically Japanese origin have also come to appreciate the teaching clarified by Shinran Shonin, and attend our overseas temples. What caused this is nothing but the universality of the Jodo Shinshu teaching that trans-cends time and space. In other words, Amida Buddha’s compassion equally reaches and nondis-criminatively embraces everyone in the midst of all sorts of pain and agony. In this year, let us continue to listen to the Dharma, considering it is directed to each one of us, and keep moving forward to share it with many other people as possible.

“NAMO AMIDA BUTSU AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

At the start of the New Year, let me begin by expressing my deepest appreciation and gratitude to the entire Sangha and Friends of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii who have supported our Organization for over 130 years in Hawaii. It is because of Amida Buddha’s Great Wisdom and Com-passion, the guidance received from the Revered Masters and Teachers like Shinran Shonin who shared the Teachings and the Sangha that we have been able to come this far. Thank you to one and all! Deeply reflecting, I have noticed that we speak a lot about the Buddha and the Dharma, but we seldom speak about the Sangha. However, the Sang-ha is also essential. Thus, out of this awareness, our next 5 Year Theme and Slogans will focus on the Sangha. Of course, the Sangha (which is you and I)

which tries to live the Dharma as shared by the Buddha. There is no doubt that the thoughts, words and actions of every individual is very important and makes a difference.

Let us receive guidance from “The Teaching of Buddha” in which it shares about clergy that “Those who wish to teach the Buddha’s teachings acceptably must be concerned about four things: first, they must be concerned about their own behavior; second, they must be concerned about their choice of words when they approach and teach people; third, they must be concerned about their motive for teaching and the end they wish to accomplish; and fourth, they must be concerned about great compassion.” Further it shares “Lay followers should not only believe in the Three Treasures…by themselves, but also they should, as far as they are able, help others…to awaken in them an unshakable faith in the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha, so that they, too, may share in Buddha’s compassion.” Let us, the Sangha, clergy and lay, jointly together share our awareness, joy and gratitude for Buddha-Dharma.

In Jodo Shinshu Teachings, Shinran Shonin shared that when we (regardless of whether we are clergy or lay) realize true mind (shinjin), we unfailing gain ten benefits in the present life. I would like to mention three of the ten: the benefit having great joy in our hearts, the benefit of being aware of Amida’s benevolence and of responding in gratitude to his virtue, and the benefit of constantly practicing great compassion.” In regards to “practicing great compassion,” Shinran Shonin quotes a sutra “What is “great compassion?” Those who continue solely in the nembutsu without any interruption will thereby be born without fail in the land of happiness at the end of life. If these people encourage each other and bring oth-ers to say the Name, they are all called “people who practice great compassion.”

Further, let us keep in mind the thoughts of our 3rd Spiritual Leader Kakunyo Shonin who said, “(Our) Prosperity is dependent on the quality and depth of the Shinjin of our Followers.” Rennyo Shonin, our 8th Spiritual Leader, further shared, “…be careful not to let the mind run its course unbridled…be sure to control it. It is wrong to allow the mind to take its course unchecked. We are enabled to control the (our) mind due to the Other-Power.” Finally, our 25th Spiritual Leader, His Eminence Gomonshu Kojun Ohtani shares “By listening to the Primal Vow and how it was established by Amida Tathagata, we are en-abled to become conscious of our own ignorance and self-oriented inclinations, and through such aware-ness, we naturally become gentle in word and deed in our efforts of minimizing our egoistic way of think-ing.” “Even though our efforts may pale in comparison to the Buddha's Compassion, we are at least guided in the proper direction by the Buddha Dharma.”

As I have been emphasizing the life of Shin Buddhist is one of responding in gratitude to the Wis-dom and Compassion of Namo Amida Butsu by reciting the Nembutsu and we try to live our life guided by the Dharma in grateful response until our life culminates (at death) with our entering the Pure Land of Perfect Peace and Happiness to attain Perfect Peace of Enlightenment. May the New Year be truly pros-perous in the truest sense of the word. Happy New Year! In Gassho/Anjali,

Eric Matsumoto, Bishop

President’s Message Building Healthy Sanghas: Embracing Generosity and Openness

Note: This message appears as part of the introduction to the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii’s 2020 calendar. When you receive your calendar, please reflect on the three suggested actions below.

Every year, over many weeks, five individuals gather to discuss, ponder, select, write, and review. And the result of their efforts is the Hawaii Kyodan Calendar that will be distributed soon. Alan Kubota, Stephan Doi, Yumi Suzuki, Rev. Kazunori Takahashi, and Bishop Eric Matsumoto toiled mightily to bring us this calendar out of a personal commitment to inspire us. This year they committed their best efforts, using the theme Building Healthy Sanghas and the slogan, Embracing Generosity and Openness, to carefully select photographs and words that move us to action. But in works such as this, the challenge is to transform inspiring photographs and lofty words into real and everyday actions that touch others. If we fail to take on this challenge, the theme and slogan and the hard work of these five individuals easily vanish from our hearts and minds even as we turn the pages of the calendar. Then the commitment of these five good peo-ple who gave us this calendar will hold no power. Let us not allow this to happen. I suggest that we all consider the following as each month unfolds.

When we turn each page to a new month, let us take the time to really look at the picture,

every object, every person. Let us see the act of generosity or the act of acceptance and openness embedded in the picture. Let us see the reflected warmth and joy of the sangha in the photograph.

Then in the days that follow, let us use the picture of the month to inspire us to be generous and open and joyful with others. Let us transform opportunities in the fleeting moments of our lives into action. And here I think of simple actions as a hearty, “Good morning,” a smile full of warmth, and a gentle touch of reassurance.

And in the moments when we have transformed the lofty phrases of our theme and slogan in-to tiny, real and true actions, let the sound of Namo Amida Butsu flow through us.

If we take the time and commit ourselves to perform these three acts, the pages of the calen-

dar will breathe Namo Amida Butsu into our lives. Our sanghas will grow healthy because threads of generosity and openness will begin to bind one member to another. And we will have made the commitment of Alan Kubota, Stephan Doi, Yumi Suzuki, Rev. Kazunori Takahashi, and Bishop Eric Matsumoto real and true.

Namo Amida Butsu Pieper J. Toyama, President

At the opening of the New Year, I would like to extend my heartfelt greetings, appreciation and gratitude. 2020 marks a new 5-year theme and slogan series. This year’s theme and slogan is “Building Healthy Sanghas: Embracing Generosity and Openness.” On reflecting upon this idea of “Building Healthy Sanghas”, we see that if it were not for the Sang-ha, the rest of the Three Treasures (Buddha and Dharma) cannot and would not exist. As we live the Dharma, we put into focus the Teachings that was laid out by the Buddha into our lives and it is out of that understanding, that we experience all of those Nembutsu Moments. When those moments come to fruition, then “Generosity and Openness” becomes a byproduct of our lives. When we reflect on the Wisdom and Compassion of the Buddha, we realize that gener-osity can be extended to everyone well after the holiday season ends. It can happen 365 days a year. What does it mean to be open? The world is in constant change. The world that we knew five, ten, fifteen years ago is very different. One of the things I’ve learned over the years in holistic/alternative health care is that what we know about the body has evolved so much and is constant-ly changing. What my wife and I did nutrition wise, when we swam competitively is so different from what swimmers do today. We have to be open to trying new things. Our churches are faced with this as we strive to stay rel-evant in today’s world and society. Personally, we must be open also. In the article, “Mindfulness and the Aloha Response”, Thao Le and Pono Shim contend that if one wants to live a life in a deep and genuine reverence for life, we must live and become a part of everything around us. That is at the very foundation of being open. When we open ourselves to everything around us, we start to see our place in the world and our place in the karmic conditions that surround us. Let us continue to live out those Nembutsu Moments embraced in gener-osity and openness. Let us continue to create the opportunities to allow the temple to grow and flourish. Namo Amida Butsu

President’s Corner Aloha Mililani Hongwanji members and friends!

Happy New Year! I am very excited and honored to serve as the new President of Mililani Hongwanji and to work with our resident minister, Reverend. David Fujimoto, and our new 2020 board members. Some of you may recall that I served as president in 2014 and 2015. It was a great learning experience for me and I will do my best to provide the lead-ership as your Kyodan President as we collectively move Mililani Hongwanji forward in the 21st Century. I respectfully ask for your patience and understanding as the temple operates through our many volunteers and sometimes things may not necessarily move forward as quickly as you may expect and/or that you may not agree with a decision of our leader-ship team. Please feel free to discuss things with me anytime and the best way to reach me in person is after temple ser-vice or by appointment.

I look forward to supporting the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii 5-year Theme:

“Building Healthy Sanghas” and 2020 slogan: “Embracing Generosity and Oneness”. Please think about what this means for you. Also, the previous 5-year Theme: “Embrace Change” is still relevant as we are constantly changing as we work together to improve our temple and to meet the challenges ahead and sometimes we may need to change the way things were done in the past for various reasons.

I am always impressed at the dedication and enthusiasm of our members, families, and friends that make up our amazing Mililani Hongwanji Ohana. I humbly ask that you continue your support to the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii and our temple.

Many thanks to our awesome Immediate Past President June Asato and the 2019 Kyo-dan Board whose great work has paved the way for us. Together, we can strengthen and grow our Sangha, plan for the future of our temple, and have fun and enjoy the warm and friendly fellowship at Mililani!

Hope to see you on Sundays and at any of our activities. Stop by to say “hi!” Please feel free to share your thoughts and suggestions with me to help Mililani Hongwanji in any way that you are able to. I wish you and your family all the best in 2020! In Gassho Dean Sakamoto

2020 Gojikai Pledge Drive Thank You Very Much for the many early responses to our 2020 Gojikai Pledge Drive. Your support to Mililani Hongwanji is most appreciated. For those that have not sent in their gojikai pledg-es yet, with or without a payment, please take time to do this as soon as possible. Please remember that by sending in your pledge forms only, payment remind-er cards will be mailed out to you at the appropriate time, and this will let us know that you intend to join us as a gojikai member for 2020. Also, please mail your pledges to our P.O. Box 893308 mailing address. Again, Thank You Very Much.

BWA 40th Anniversary Luncheon

2019 has come and gone for Mililani BWA, and with it, memories of many fun activities, ranging from treating every-one to zenzai in January, hosting the country store and rum-mage sale at the Mililani Hongwanji Bazaar in March and O-Bon in August.

Many community service activities were held, such as the Ehime Maru Clean-up, the bi-monthly Dharma message and service by Rev. Fujimoto for residents at the Wahiawa Re-hab and Skilled Nursing Facility and sing-along by BWA members, C.A.R.E. Day Project for attendees at Mililani Hale, and providing refreshments for the blood drive at Mili-lani High School.

In between, we enjoyed luncheons, seminars, and of course, the highlight of the year -- the BWA World Convention in San Francisco. We could not have success-fully participated in all of these activities without the capable leadership of our President, Diane Yoza. She kept us all in check, making sure that we did what was expected of us. We look forward to 2020

with hope and anticipation that another great year will be in store for all of us at Mililani Hongwanji. We had our final meeting of 2019 on Dec. 5. The dinner/meeting provided a festive closure to the year as we enjoyed a delicious pot-luck dinner by our membership, and games by Karen Oshiro. Claire Doi and Doreen Sakamoto created a slide show of the BWA activities presid-

ed over by the members during 2019. Finally, we wish to extend a warm welcome to two new members, Lu-

ana Fukutomi and Lenora Inoue. Happy New Year and may you have a healthy and happy Year of the Rat!

Happy Year 2020! We hope your holiday

season was filled with wonderful memories and

everyone is rested and ready to start a new dec-

ade!

We started the

last month of 2019 by

celebrating Bodhi

Day, the day that Sid-

dhartha Gautama be-

came enlightened un-

der the Bodhi tree. The students did Bodhi leaf printing on greeting cards and calendars, which became

gifts for their families and teachers. On December 15th, Rev. Fujimoto discussed holiday traditions with

the Dharma School students and answered the question, “can Buddhists celebrate Christmas?” We al-

so played a few games of Santa bingo. Everyone had a

fun time and went home

with a lot of prizes.

A belated thank

you to Sarah Noia, who

with a little help from her

dad Dan, emceed the No-

vember 24th service. Sa-

rah did an awesome job as emcee!

Here’s what we have planned for January:

January 5 – Activity on Shinran Shonin

January 19 – Altar etiquette (meet in front of the altar)

January 26 – Introduce the 2020 DSTO Poster Contest theme and begin

poster drafts

On Sunday, January 26th, the Dharma School and Jr. YBA will be hosting the annual

Sangha Appreciation Breakfast at 8:00am at the temple. We are asking students and

families to meet at the Ed building kitchen at 6:30am to help prepare breakfast for the

Sangha to show our appreciation for their sup-

port throughout the year.

Please feel free to see Dharma School Di-

rector David Thomson or teachers Roger Babcock, Claire Doi, Jill

Kyhos, Susan Oshiro, or Gay Tanaka if you have any questions

or need more info about our activities.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Boy how time has flown by! 2019 was packed with so many exciting activities and events it would be a whole newsletter to list them all! (Which we won’t do at this time.) so here’s a little recap of activity since our last newsletter. On Thanksgiving Day, we were able to meet and deliver our wonderful crane crafts to Mililani Plaza Assisted Living. These were to be used to decorate the Thanksgiv-ing buffet line and we also took some to every floor. It was nice to meet the resi-dents and give them thanksgiving greetings and I know many of them appreciated the fresh young faces of our juniors who were there to deliver the goods! December was a quiet month for us but our United is busy getting ready to go to Kona for our Winter Federation meeting which will be on January 19-20. We always look forward to the overnight experience to form stronger bonds with the neighbor island juniors.

Please also come to temple on Sunday, January 26 for the Mililani Hongwanji Dharma school/Jr. YBA appreciation breakfast! We will start serving food between 7:45-8:00am so you have plenty time to eat before 9:00 service! We are also going to be col-lecting canned goods for the Food Bank. Our United thought it would be a good idea to make our donation after the holidays to help the Food Bank restock their warehouses. Looking forward into 2020 we will be participating in Mililani Hongwanji’s annual

Bazaar, celebrating 2 seniors, doing more craft nights, and going to summer convention on Maui. We continuously look for new members to join our fun and Jr. YBA is open to any student 7th grade through one year after high school graduation. Please contact our advisors Gay Tanaka or Arynn Ishikawa via [email protected], if you are interested to learn more. Follow us on Instagram: @jrybaofoahu We are truly grateful for your continued support as we cultivate the future of the temple and commu-nity!

Mililani Hongwanji is an EcoSangha Community The Mililani Hongwanji EcoSangha Committee will share monthly goals with members and friends. If you wish to join the committee or have suggestions, contact June Asato or Rev. Fujimoto. Goal: Reduce single use plastics and forks at home and elsewhere. “BY0-CUP

s” an acronym for Bring Your Own-Cup, Utensils, Plate In addition to reducing single-use plastics, “BY0-CUP s” is a practice that pro-motes mindfulness and gratitude for all that nature provides. Mugs/tea cups are available for use at all temple activities for beverages and the sangha is encouraged to “BYO-CUPs”. A gentle rollout for this goal has been ongoing since Earth Day in April, 2019. Have you noticed? Idea from the going green idea booklets created at the BWA workshop in November 2019 presented by Dave Atcheson of Hawaii Betsuin

Monthly Joint Memorial Service Change Mililani Hongwanji will be holding it’s monthly joint memorial service on the SECOND Sunday of each month. This is to ac-commodate various events that come up during the year. Please plan accordingly.

Memorial Services Mililani Hongwanji conducts memorial services in hon-or of those who have passed away. The Shotsuki Memorial Ser-vice is a general memorial service which are held monthly to remember members and friends who passed away during the month in which the memorial service is held. These services are held primarily for those individuals that do not fall in the yearly service interval cycle. Nenki Hoyo Memorial Services are memorial services which are held separate from the monthly memorial services in yearly intervals. These separate private services can be held before, on or after the memorial dates. It is a personal oppor-tunity to gather as a family to encounter and listen to the Bud-dha Dharma and remember your family members and friends who have passed on and through these services, we are able to

reflect on all that we have received from them in our daily lives. It also

gives families the opportunity to reconnect with members they otherwise would not see during the course of the year.

Minister’s Private Visitation Are you unable to come to the temple? Please call Rev. David Fujimoto at 808.625.0925 to request a private visit. The minister would love to reach out to you and be the bridge between you, the temple and the sangha!

On January 7th, all are invited to participate and extend our New Year’s Greetings to our friends at the Wa-hiawa Skilled Nursing Facility at the Wahiawa General Hos-pital. Join Rev. Fujimoto as he conducts a short service, along with a dharma message and greet the patients. Due to limited amount of parking spaces available at the facility, carpooling is highly recommended. We will leave Mililani Hongwanji at 9:30am and service begins at 10am. We hope to see you there!!!
