Dear Parishioners,

Bishop Ray sent me an interesting account about Our Lady of the Skies Chapel which you may enjoy reading:

“During World War II, Bob O’Brien promised the Blessed Mother that if he survived the war, he would do something special for her. When he returned home to his wife and three daughters, he believed that Mary had kept him safe.

O’Brien worked for the U.S. Customs at Idlewild Airport in New York. While vacationing in Boston, he noticed a new chapel at Logan Airport. That’s what Idlewild needed, he decided. When he got home, O’Brien and three other custom agents asked a local pastor to celebrate Mass at the airport for employees. The priest agreed and an airport restaurant provided space for the liturgy.

Catholic employees at Idlewild liked having Mass at the airport, and formed the Catholic Guild to raise funds for a more permanent facility. The chapel opened in 1955.

When the airport needed to expand, the chapel lost its lease and began to hunt for a new location. The last Mass at the old chapel was held on Christmas Day 1988. On New Year’s Day in 1989, the first Mass was offered in the interim chapel of the International Arrivals Building.

The current Our Lady of the Snows Chapel was dedicated August 14, 2002.”

How blest we are to have a large piece of this history in our own church. The stained glass windows surrounding us are the windows built for Our Lady of the Skies Chapel in the 1950’s!

God bless Bob O’Brien for his faith and promise to our Blessed Lady.

You call us to holiness and we trust you to lead us together on our journey to be a renewed Church, for with you all things are possible. Create us anew in Jesus Christ your Son. Liberate us from all that keeps us from you. Heal us from every form of sin and violence. Transform us to live your Word more profoundly. Awaken us to the sacred; rebuild trust among us. Enliven our parishes; reunite our families. May your Holy Spirit empower us to live as a community of love, freed to share in your work of recreating our world and restoring justice. We believe you are doing something new, calling us to arise together in Christ to celebrate the fullness of life. Amen. © 2007 RENEW International
