Period antique furnishings create an authentic ambiance of plantation life in the early 19th century on the Eastern Shore. This house operates as a museum that is open for visitors March through December with trained volunteer docents giving guided tours of the interpretive interior as well as various exhibits, laboratories and research space.

It is also used as a venue for weddings and other special events for the community

Hopkins & Brothers Store was owned and operated by the Hopkins family from 1842 to 1965 in Onancock, Virgin-ia. A fleet of sailing vessels and later steamboats shipped local farmers’ produce to market from Hopkins Wharf

and brought back needed supplies and commodities from the eastern seaboard. The store now houses a dockside

restaurant where visitors can explore its rich history through exhibits and photographs while they dine.

The Wise Family Cemetery is located in Ches-sonnessex, Virginia, a short drive from the Onley Farm, the plantation and home of the only Gover-nor of Virginia from the Eastern Shore, Henry A.

Wise. The 50’x 50’ plat is enclosed with a brick wall and a wrought iron gate. Literary quotations on

marble slabs, memorial plaques are on the inside of the wall, and gravestones are arranged in four rows

some of which date to the late 17th century.

Consider comparables. What have other homes in your neighborhood sold for recently? How do

they compare to yours in terms of size, upkeep, and amenities?

Consider competition. How many other houses are for sale in your area? Are you competing

against new homes?

Get an appraisal. For a few hundred dollars, a qualified appraiser can give you an estimate

of your home’s value. Be sure to ask for a market-value appraisal. To locate appraisers in your area, contact The Appraisal Institute or ask your

REALTOR® for some recommendations.

Ask a lender. Since most buyers will need a mortgage, it’s important that a home’s sale

price be in line with a lender’s estimate of its value.

Be accurate. Studies show that homes priced more than 3 percent over the correct price

take longer to sell.

Know what you’ll take. It’s critical to know what price you’ll accept before beginning a negotiation

with a buyer.
