The Exhibition Goes Forth!
“ I have a plan . . . we must record the history of Maryburgh
Primary School and we need to raise money for the Heritage
Society. What about writing a book and we could launch it at a
coffee morning?” Those were not the words of Baldrick from
Blackadder, but of Angus Christie, Chairman of Ross and
Cromarty Heritage Society and stalwart supporter of “The
School” - a fervent and tireless campaigner against its closure by
Highland Council who favoured a new, amalgamated, school in
Conon Bridge. Needless to say, HC won the battle, but not after
an ardent campaign by the local community to retain a school in
Maryburgh. The project grew from “Book + Coffee morning” to
“Exhibition + Book Launch + Coffee ”. A Facebook page was set
up to accommodate former pupils and the odd (some odder than
others!) members of staff , all of whom shared photos and
memories of their time at “The School”. After a good few months
of research, pleading for information and, dare we say it . . .
“gentle persuasion”, folk started to come out of the proverbial
woodwork with encouraging enthusiasm ; the project was under
way. We had photos, memories and artefacts. We were on a roll!
The Exhibition, held over two days on the 19th
and 20th
October,
was well attended with a constant stream of visitors all keen to,
hopefully, get a glimpse of themselves on the display boards, find
a relation in the records folders ( thanks to Mhairi Mackenzie for
the research and presentation of the information), or admire the
various trophies on display. The “Heidie”, also known to pupils as
Eco Grandad, and to the rest of us as Tom Thomas, took great
delight in making sure that donations went in the “inkwell” of the
desk ( kindly donated by Leanne Urquhart) and the threat of the
tawse ( donated by Mr T Menzies) was more than enough to make
folk dig into their pockets – but we all know about the generosity of
“Maryburghers”!
To date we have raised enough at the Exhibition from donations, the
coffee shop and miscellaneous sales to enable RCHS to pay M.A.A. a
substantial, much needed amount for the use of Maryburgh Amenities
Centre.
“The Book” has sold extremely well although we still have a few left
for sale . . . contact Angus, Mhairi, Liz or purchase at The Cottage
Bar or the Conon Post Office counter if you need an extra
Christmas/Ne’erday present for someone special!
Thanks to all who made the official “celebration” of Maryburgh
Primary School such a success, and thank you to those who gave us
such positive comments regarding the exhibition and the book. The
work put into this enterprise was most certainly worth the effort due
to the resourcefulness and kind donations of photos and memories
from all of you!
Take a bow everyone . . . “You are wonderful!”
