2016 MAROMA COLLECTION

Maroma’s commitment to eco-friendly products & production practices

Maroma, our principal’s home in Auroville was founded some 40 years ago on a once barren plateau that has since been transformed into a lush green area in which a vital young city is progressively taking shape. Auroville itself is an international project dedicated to human unity and the advancement of society in a fair and non-sectarian fashion. The community now extends over 100 settlements inhabited by people from India and 30 other countries. The residents are involved in a wide range of projects including environmental regeneration research, organic farming, renewable energy, green construction technology, handicrafts and small eco-friendly industries.

These activities have become a major source of fair trade employment for the surrounding villages. Aurovillians also work closely with these villages to improve their infrastructure plus educational and health care facilities.

Maroma employs only adults (mostly women) from the local villages. To encourage schooling, they are required to complete their education prior to being employed. Due to annual pay increases, salaries are generally higher than the local standard. Benefits include a safe and pleasant work atmosphere, reasonable hours, health care facilities, hygiene programs, nutritional snacks and savings plans. Positions at Maroma are much sought after by the area's residents and employees tend to stay with the company for many years.

Maroma is the largest employer in Auroville and the biggest contributor. Each year, 40% of Maroma's profits are returned to the community to further growth and development.

Maroma’s office and manufacturing facilities are located in India, which is one of the most beautiful but densely populated countries in the world. As a consequence, thereis a particular sensitivity to environmental issues and a dedication to help reduce the degradation of the planet's natural resources. The ingredients used in the fabrication of Maroma’s products are recyclable and abundantly present in nature or taken from renewable resources.

Auroville is one of the first cities to completely offset itselectricity usage by feeding wind generated energy from captive windmills installed by the Auroville unit Varuna, into the grid. Maroma is covered under this apart from also having installed solar panels that generate about 35% of its required energy. Waste is controlled and re-cycled and materials with minimal impact on the environment are chosen for packaging. Fragrances are constituted with natural essential oils. However, some synthetic based fragrances may be used when that is abetter solution to help preserve natural resources which are not easily renewable, or when they come from animal origins. Of course, products are never tested on animals.
