A light entry of prime cattle this week with few butchers’ type cattle on offer which affected the overall averages. Greater numbers are required to satisfy buyer requirements. Top price per kilo was 184p for a Limousin x heifer from Messrs. W.S. Gay & Son of St. Allen purchased by R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. A nice pair of Limousin x steers from Messrs. M.D. Curtis & Son of Gunwalloe sold to a top call of 175p/kg to David King of Exeter with the heavier 759kg steer top value realising £1,313 to R.J. Trevarthen Ltd.

A fair entry of cull cows met a continued good demand and trade especially for well-covered cows both beef and dairy. Setting the premium at 139p/kg was a smart South Devon x cow from Mr. I.C. Lobb of St. Ewe purchased by Messrs. Rapson of Tavistock. Also selling well a trio of big Limousin x cows from Mr. R.T. Hallowell of Lowertown, with the heaviest weighing 902kg achieving £1,055 to David King of Exeter. Leading Friesian from Messrs. P.J. Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn at 126p/kg with a huge 880kg cow from Messrs. H.I. Angwin & Son of Nanstallon top value at £1,021, both bought by Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh. Four cull bulls forward, including a Dexter, and all selling strongly with Limousins to 120p/kg for Messrs. S.S. Parker & Son of Callestick and a 967kg bull for Messrs. W.S. The best number of store cattle for the year so far met a continued firm trade with good conformation and more forward cattle setting the pace. Steers sold to £965 for an 18 month old trio of Aberdeen Angus crosses from Messrs. R.H. & L.G. Benney of Breage. A highlight was a British Blue x yearling steer from Mr. N. Doble of St. Agnes at £905. Leading the heifers at £825 was a 22 month old Simmental x for Messrs. B.J. Tregoning & Son of Wendron. Best pair of Aberdeen Angus x heifers with one at just 16 months old from a run for J. & S. Farms Ltd of Penzance reached £775.

SPECIAL SALE OF IN-LAMB BREEDING EWES (100)

This week’s market included a genuine flock dispersal of 100 Texel x in-lamb ewes on behalf of Paul and Joy Eggins of St. Breock, Wadebridge.

The sale comprised an excellent run of big-framed ewes which were a credit to the vendors. The ewes met keen bidding especially for the big strong older ewes with the majority of the flock 6T and over, all scanned in-lamb to Texel and Charollais rams and due from 20th February (photos overleaf).
