MARK MONTIELARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

Co-curated by architecture critics Sam Lubell and Greg Goldin and designed by Clive Wilkinson Architects, this exhi-bition for A+D takes explores the “what if” Los Angeles. The show looks at visionary works that had the greatest potential to reshape the city, from buildings to master plans, parks to follies and transportation proposals any of which could have transformed both the physical reality and thecollective perception of the metropolis. As the exhibition design assistant it was my job to not only create the working drawings for the show but also my responsibility to make sure the curators and designer’s vision came into fruition in the design, fabrication, and installation stages.

Curated by architecture critic Greg Goldin and spon-sered by the Getty for Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in LA, this exhibition for A +D takes the most common of Los Angeles experiences, a typical drive along a typical bou-levard, and exposes the visual impressions that are continually cast off from the urban landscape that lines the roadway. While presenting the experiential point of view from the windshield, the exhibition also slows us down enough to closely examine the buildings, uses, history and activities of this vibrant stretch of Bev-erly Boulevard—a view often overlooked when driving in a car.

The goals of this project is to push the ongoing discourse of digital fabrication away from the recreating of a perfect form created in a digital realm but to the exploration of materiality as an informative attribute to the design process of mold fabrication as well as casting process. This project attempts to create an informative dialogue between the exploration of techniques available in the fabrication of a milled mold in terms of form/ surface textures and the exploration of varieties of possible materials. From this process of a back and forth informative dialogue the product sustains the resultant of this exploration creating modules produced by a conscious understanding of materiality and fabrication techniques displaying a link between maker and thinker. Through this process the design is not what comes first but something generated from a continuous transformative process that reiterates itself parallel to the speed of the explorations and the dialogue between both. The materiality is created of a mixture of casting resin, metal shaving and wood chips left behind by wood used within the wood shop and digital fabrication lab. This mixture creates patterns when placed under light similar to those perceived when under a tree looking up at the leaves while providing shade to an otherwise completely exposed area.

The project began as a series of formal explorations whose aim was to create a complex tessellated surface with endless variation possibilities but made up of only a certain set of modules. The development of the design proposal began as a simple tiling exercise which evolved into a three-dimensional aggregated object.

The fabricat ion of the mold in wh ic h the modules were to be cas ted frombecame an essent ial par t of the des ign in wh ic h they c reated a dialogue in both the f inal form, texture and even mater ial of the f inal produc t . Original ly the form was to be made of ceramic but the forms dras t ic angles made i t imposs ible to release; as the des ign progressed and mater ial c hange to res in the mold evolved in both form, fabricat ion , mater ial and sealant texture to c reate a successfu l cas t .
A Study inMATERIAL
In order to add a phenomenal effect to the resin, Woodchips and metal shavings were added during the casting process, which not only gave texture to the cast but also kept costs down. The balance between the added material, resin and the aluminum foil sealant further enhanced the project by discussing a layer of materiality to what once was only a form driven project.

Designed to participate in the ACSA Steel Competition, Digital Domain is a design for a homeless shelter based in Los Angeles’ Skid Row District. With hundreds of homeless filling the streets of skid row on a daily bases, the project attempts to elevate the community by creating a homeless assistance center that is not based in the analog ways of training, that often ending up as dead end jobs for the participants, but provide training in the fields of technology. Utilizing the proximity between Downtown Los Angeles and the technology-driven districts that surround it, Digital Domain offers an entry into the world of technology by providing shelter beds to homeless individuals who dismantle outdated computers donated by the public. Once entered into the program the participants are then trained for jobs installing software, configuring hardware, and setting up information networks. These jobs are among the fastest growing in the nation, and provide excellent opportunities to gain stability and re-enter society. Designed to elevate the participants both figuratively and literally the project cantilevers over 150 feet over an existing park-ing lot allowing the building footprint to function as a normal park-ing lot during the day and introducing the possibility for a digital flea markets on the weekends. Using a seesaw principle as a form of structure the project creates unparallel views to immediately nearby Downtown LA while maintaining an identity with the Skid Row community.

Situated in the ruins of what was once was the town of Surfridge, California, a town that fell victim to eminent domain, this 25 unit housing complex attempts to do more then justprovide shelter for its residence, it attempts to reintroduce society to an abandoned area, it attempts to bring life back into the land for the lost. Located between dockwieler state beach and LAX airport, the project’s structure, program, materiality, and language are prescribed by its site orientation and relation to either the soothing sounds of the pacific ocean or the roaring sounds of the aviation industry. The goal of the project is to revitalize a once highly social and economical area, which housed the likes of Cecil B Demille, as well as protect a nearby adjacent butterfly reservation through the creation of new public services, circulation and open spaces. Designed diagrammatically the project also explores the theoretical eisenman ideal of living in a three-dimensional diagram. Designed and dictated by north american flight patterns the project creates reunification with society through the creation of public space and added amenities such as the creation of new public beach facilities, retail, and new vehicular and ADA friendly pedestriancirculation methods to the beach.

M E D I A
IN THE FALL OF 2012 I FOUNDED AND CORDINATED A LECTURE SERIES AT WOODBURY UNIVERSITY ENTITLED ARCHITECTS BEYOND ARCHITECTURE. THE LECTURE SERIES IS ABOUT THE TRANSDISPLINARY OPPORTUNITIES ARCHITECTS HAVE EXPLORED BEYOND THE FIELD OF ARCHITECTURE TO PUSH IT BEYONDS ITS DEFINED LIMITS. THE LECTURE SERIES WAS USED AS A TOPIC OF DISCUSSION IN SAM LUBELL’S ARTICLE “ARCHITECT’S BRANCH OUT” IN THE ARCHITECT’S NEWSPAPER.
AS PART OF WOODBURY UNIVERSITY LECTURE SERIES COMMITTEE I WAS ASKED TO CONDUCT AN INTERVIEW WITH ONE OF THE SPEAKERS MARCEL SANCHEZ-PRIETO, PRINCIPAL OF CRO STUDIO. THE INTERVIEW WHICH DISCUSSED TOPICS SUCH AS CULTURE, BORDER REGIONS AND DIGITAL FABRICATION WAS FILMED AND USED AS A PROMOTION TOOL FOR WOODBURY UNIVERSITY AND THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE.
ARCHITECTS BEYOND ARCHITECTURE.
INTERVIEW WITH MARCEL SANCHEZ-PRIETO
THIS SHORT DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE STAGES OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES, PARTICULARLY IN THE FIELD OF ARCHITECTURE, WAS AN INVESTIGATION IN USING MEDIA AS A TOOL TO CREATE A SOCIAL CHANGE. THE FILM WAS SCREENED AT WOODBURY’S COMMUNICA-TION SHOWCASE AND SUPPORTED BY THE MEDIA POLICY CENTER.
