Workers keyto confidenceSMALL business confi-dence is on the up and willcontinue to climb if bigemployers maintain theirworkforce, according to theBotany Bay Business Enter-prise Centre.

Executive oflicer MarcusDwyer said the locality's re-centjobs figures would havea trickle-down effect forsmall operators as big emp-Ioyers, such as Sydney Air-port, grow their workforce.

"As they get bigger, peopleneed to be fed, they need toshop for clothes, they needto fill up at the petrol sta-tion," he said.

But he warned the effecton efficiency improvementsin the area's other big indus-try, such as automation atPort Botany, was yet to beknown.

The centre has seen a10-20per cent increase inenquries over the past fewyears.

LESS than 10km from theSydney CBD there is a jobbonanza taking place wherethere are 2.5 jobs for everyworking age adult.

The big surplus in jobs inthe Botany Bay local govern-ment area- totalling 63,257 -means there are more thanthree jobs for every twoworking-age residents24,608.

The 2014 flgures, spruikedby Botany Bay Council's"Vision 2040" directionspaper, reflect the addition ofclose to 10,000 jobs since2007, according to the Aus-tralian Bureau of Statistics.

Mayor Ben Keneally saidobvious employment hotspots were Port Botany andSydney Airport. Out of29,000 employees at SydneyAirport, 7 per cent lived inthe eastern suburbs and 12per cent in inner Sydney.The airport added 1000 posi-tions between 2072-14.

But it's not all good news.While Port Botany has

been a big employer sinceopening in 1979, recent auto-matlon and cost cutting hasIed to job losses at variousfreight and shipping com-panies. Last week, Hutchi-son Ports sacked 56 wharfies(see page 19).

At neighbouring Rand-wick, which also takes in asection of the port, therewere 54,593 jobs for a popu-lation of 143,776, accordingto the ABS. Health care andsocial assistance were theIargest employers, generat-ing 11,605 jobs.
