CHAPTER NEWS - PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
2
Dear Hadassah Friends, It is our joyous privilege to announce to you the closing of the Camden County Chapter for the next nine months. There are several reasons for this, which we shall discuss below, and we implore you to spin your grogger (noisemaker) each time you read the word Hadassah to accentuate our organization’s name.
In the first place, we have made all our fundraising goals due to an extremely generous gift to Hadassah (do I hear your grogger?) from a well-known and beloved Camden County Chapter member who always said, “When I hit the Lottery, I’m going to split it with Hadassah…and my grandchildren…and the nice man who holds the door open for me at the bank.” Shayna Punim Givalot has already visited Israel several times. Each time, she contacted Hadassah/Israel in advance ([email protected]) to arrange a tour so she could wash the Chagall Windows, dust any plaques with her name, and mop all the patient rooms on the 5th Floor of the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower. Her upcoming trip will be with Hadassah/Ayelet Tours, departing March 32nd. Her itinerary will include sky diving and Jeep driving through archeological sites in the Armenian Quarter of the Old City. Shayna Punim Givalot found the trip info online at Hadassah.org/missions. She says she’ll use her Lottery winnings to bring her two daughters and five granddaughters along with her. But the nice man from the bank is “busy.” Shayna P, we all look forward to seeing your Israel/Hadassah photos in our next bulletin, and thanks for your generous gift to Hadassah (swing those groggers).
In addition to Shayna Punim Givalot’s donation, every single one of our chapter members has made a contribution of some denomination to Hadassah (grogger noise) in the last 3 months. When contacted by our speed-dialing fund raising team led by Fundraising VPs Bobbi Bernstein and Charlene Burd, every last member reportedly said, “I’ve been meaning to help Israel and the world with outstanding medical care and medical research, but I always lose the phone number or that personal pledge letter….. Thanks for asking. I’m sending a multiple of $18 today.” “I also plan to attend the Rockin’The Runway Fashion Show on March 30 at the Doubletree by Hilton in Mt. Laurel and bid till I burst on silent auction packages and designer handbags. That will certainly give Hadassah (grogger spin) all the money it needs!
As for the 1,000 new annual members who joined last week at $36, every one of them has informed Carol Charen, VP of Membership, that she is immediately
WISHFUL THINKING – A PURIM SPIEL* The following MESSAGE IS totally tongue-in-cheek and meant to be outrageous and absurd.
*A Purim Spiel, meaning “game” or “play” is the term used to describe festive practices, usually a comic dramatization of the Book of Esther. In modern use, the Purim Spiel is also the use of satire or humor in publishing a “FAKE” newspaper article or blog during the month of Adar.
stepping up to Life Membership, at a cost of $250. Consequently, the Membership Team is knocking off for the next 9 months, too.
In case you were wondering about upcoming programs, Bernice Moss and Joyce Kimelman inform us that they have secured Barbra Streisand to sing a medley of best-loved Country Western songs in Yiddish with kazoo accompaniment at our next meeting and she’s not charging a cent! (Do check back with us in September, however, when a local movie raconteur will regale us with stories about Barbra Steisand!) Please invite all your friends to this fabulous program because we’re putting up a tent and Barbara Frantz, VP of Education, is making her famous Mandelbrot. (This dessert will also appear at Hadassah Shabbat’s Oneg on March 3 at Ner Tamid Synagogue.)
FLASH NEWS! Heartburn has just been declared the greatest health threat to men and women between the ages of 35-95. Hadassah’s Cardiology Department has reported a breakthrough drug which has been tested all over the world at hospitals named either “Mt. Sinai” or “Albert Einstein.” 120,000 study subjects were fed a diet of latkes, schmaltz (chicken fat), gefilte fish and apple cake. One half received a pill containing compressed matzo meal and the other half received Hadassah’s new wonder drug called CaloriesAway. Asked how they felt, 50% of those in the control group said, “Eh, I can’t complain.” However, 95% of the CaloriesAway group said they felt like dancing the hora. CaloriesAway will be marketed under the unpronounceable generic name “nruBtraeH.” Pills will cost $10 each, but we can get them for you wholesale from our hospitals at Ein Kerem and Mt, Scopus.
We’re happy to report that our Day in the District visit to Senator Menendez’s office was a resounding success. Not only did he agree to sign on to any bills related to Gender Equity in Medicine, but also any bills members may have incurred shopping online last Chanukah. Many thanks to Yvonne Friedman, Organization VP, who arranged for a Kosher discounted lunch that day catered by The Capital Grille since this year in Hadassah (groggers, please), “Every Bite Counts”. Kol HaKavod to all. See you again in 2018. We’re on vacation until then. Don’t call. Don’t email. Don’t text. And now stop making noise with that grogger!

CHAPTER NEWS - EDUCATION
Many customs related to eating special foods have developed around Purim. The most famous Purim food is hamantaschen (Yiddish for “Haman’s pockets”) which is also known (in Hebrew as) oznay Haman meaning “Haman’s ears.” In addition to eating hamantaschen filled with poppy seeds, fruit, cheese, or jellies, other foods are also traditional for Purim. A special Purim challah, know as keylitsh (kulich) in Russian, is sometimes made. This challah is oversized and extensively braided. The braids on the challah are intended to remind people of the rope used to hang Haman. Kreplach are customarily eaten whenever “beating” takes place: before Yom Kippur when men have themselves flogged (rarely done in modern times), on Hoshanah Rabbah when the willow branches are beaten, and on Purim when Haman is beaten. The kreplach consist of triangular pouches of dough filled with chopped meat. They are eaten as a separate dish or served in soup. Bean dishes are also eaten. The include salted beans boiled in their jackets, and chickpeas boiled and seasoned with salt and pepper: This is meant to remind us that Esther would not eat anything at the court of King Ahashuerus that was not kosher, so she mainly ate peas and beans. Among Sephardic Jews, it is a custom to wrap pastry dough around a decorated hard-boiled egg to create the shape of a Purim character or an animal. After baking these artistic creations (Flares) are displayed with pride and eaten with delight. In keeping with two of Hadassah’s health themes this year, “Heart Health” and “Every Bite Counts”, I found this healthy hamentashen recipe to share (SEE BELOW). Wishing you and your families a Happy and Heart Healthy Purim! Chag Sameach, Barbara Frantz Camden County Chapter Education VP Ingredients: DOUGH: ¾ C unsalted organic butter, room temperature ½ C organic coconut palm sugar crystals 2 large organic, free range eggs 1 teaspoon grated organic orange zest 1 tablespoon juice of organic orange 1 inch of fresh organic vanilla bean or 1 teaspoon 100% pure organic vanilla extract 2½ C organic spelt flour, plus extra for rolling out the dough
Directions: Dough: 1. In a food processor, combine the sugar & butter, pulse until smooth. Add egg, orange zest, orange juice, & vanilla
and pulse until thoroughly combined. 2. Add flour, baking powder, & salt. Process until a ball of dough is formed. 3. If dough is still sticky, transfer dough to well-floured surface & work in as much flour until dough is no longer sticky. 4. Divide dough in half & flatten each half into a disc. Wrap each disc tightly in plastic wrap and chill for 2-3 hours, or
overnight. 5. Place rack in middle of oven and preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 6. Unwrap one disc and roll out on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of ⅛ inch. Cut into 2½ inch circles.
Transfer rounds to baking sheet. Reroll scraps & make more rounds. 7. Brush water around the rims of the circle (use pastry brush or finger). Add teaspoon of filling to the canter. Bring
the dough up around the filling and pinch the edges together in 3 places to form a triangle, making sure the filling is exposed.
8. Bake 10 - 15 minutes or until the tips are golden. Transfer to wire rack to cool. 9. Apricot filling: Place apricots in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and
reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes. Drain well. 10. Add apricots to a food processor and pulse until a slightly rough mixture is formed. Add all other ingredients and
pulse for approximately 30 seconds. Do not overprocess.
2 teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon Himalayan salt crystals or Real Salt APRICOT FILLING: 2 C dried organic apricots, prunes or dates, unsulphured and unsweetened 1 C organic golden raisins, unsulphured and unsweetened 2 teaspoons organic, local, raw honey Grated rind of one organic lemon Juice of one organic lemon

All clothing should be in good condition, preferably dry cleaned when appropriate . All donations go to: Helene Cohen, 12 Blossom Ct, Cherry Hill, NJ 08003. Growing demand of our 3 Betsy & Peter Fischer food pantries has made it challenging for us to assist those in need. In the past 6 months, JFCS has given out food to over 2,468 food insecure people in South Jersey. As you may be aware of, JFCS has the only Kosher Food Pantries in the tri-county region. However, our agency is responsive to the needs of the broader community on a non-discriminating basis, as we provide service to all denominations.
Bring food donations to all Hadassah meetings, to your syna-gogue or drop off to the Family Assistance Ctr, address above.
