WEEKLY NOTE Thirsting for Righteousness—the 1st and 3rd Commandments

T he next Beatitude is, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6). The

notion of “justice” or “righteousness” in Sacred Scripture is an essentially religious one. The closest word we have to this biblical notion is holiness.

As God says: the “righteous shall live by faith” (Hebrews 10:38, quoting Habakkuk 2:4), and “without faith it is impossible to please” God (Hebrews 11:6).

Regarding this Beatitude, Pope Francis writes:

Hunger and thirst are intense experiences, since they involve basic needs and our instinct for survival. There are those who desire justice and yearn for righteousness with similar intensity (Gaudete et exsultate 77).

To hunger and thirst for justice is to desire holiness above food, drink, even above life itself. We should hunger for holiness as the most basic need we have for eternal survival—life with God in heaven. This Beatitude then is fulfilled in the First and Third Commandments: “I am the LORD your God…You shall have no other gods before me” and “Keep holy the Lord’s day.” They shall be satisfied by the beatific vision of God in heaven, as they put God before all else in life. This is seen in carrying out life’s duties and persevering in prayer.

The First Commandment: “I am the LORD your God…You shall have no other gods before me,” tells us is that he is “a jealous God” (Exodus 20:5, etc.),

wanting us—as his people, and each individually—to look to him as our exclusive bridegroom. To put some other god before him—before Jesus Christ—is to be unfaithful, to be adulterous. For this reason, God frequently calls idolatry harlotry (see Ezekiel 16, Hosea, etc.). As the Catechism of the

Catholic Church teaches: “The worship of the one God sets man free from turning in on himself, from the slavery of sin and the idolatry of the world” (CCC 2097).

Hungering and thirsting for righteousness should move us to put God first in our lives, since “the Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:29-30, quoting Deuteronomy 6:4).

As the Church Christ’s bride, it is easier to understand our Lord’s words: “He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:37). We should indeed love our father and mother, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters… but we should love them in our love for Jesus Christ, our true love. The kind of love God wants from us is total, intimate, lifelong, faithful, and fruitful, more so than any earthly marriage. Husbands and wives should love Christ in their spouse: “Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives to your husbands, as to the Lord… Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:21-25).

NOTA SEMANAL Sed de Justicia—Segundo y Tercer Mandamientos

L a siguiente Bienaventuranza es: "Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia, porque serán

saciados" (Mateo 5:6). La noción de "justicia" o de "rectitud" en la Sagrada Escritura es esencialmente religiosa. La palabra más cercana que tenemos a esta noción bíblica es la santidad. Como Dios dice: los "justos vivirán por fe" (Hebreos 10:38, citando Habacuc 2:4), y "sin fe es imposible complacer" a Dios (Hebreos 11:6).

Con respecto a esta Bienaventuranza, el Papa Francisco escribe:

El hambre y la sed son experiencias intensas, ya que implican necesidades básicas y nuestro instinto de supervivencia. Hay quienes desean justicia y anhelan justicia con similar intensidad (Gaudete et exsultate 77).

Tener hambre y la sed de justicia es desear la santidad por encima de la comida, la bebida, incluso por encima de la vida misma. Debemos tener hambre de santidad como la necesidad más básica que

tenemos para la supervivencia eterna: la vida con Dios en el cielo. Esta Bienaventuranza se cumple entonces en el Primer y Tercer Mandamientos: "Yo soy el Señor tu Dios... No tendrás otros dioses delante de mí" y "Santificar el día del Señor." Serán satisfechos con la visión beatífica de Dios en el cielo, ya que antepusieron a Dios frente a todo lo demás en la vida. Esto puede verse al llevar a cabo los deberes de la vida y en la perseverancia en la oración.

El primer mandamiento: "Yo soy el Señor tu Dios... No tendrás otros dioses delante de mí", nos dice que él es "un Dios celoso" (Éxodo 20:5, etc.), queriendo que nosotros —como su gente, y cada uno individualmente— lo miremos como nuestro exclusivo novio. Poner a otro dios delante de él —delante de Jesucristo— es ser infiel, ser adúltero. Por esta razón, Dios frecuentemente llama arlometría de idolatría (véase Ezequiel 16, Oseas, etc.). Como nos enseña el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica: " La adoración del Dios único libera al hombre del repliegue sobre sí mismo, de la esclavitud del pecado y de la idolatría del mundo." (CIC 2097).

K olejne błogosławieństwo z Kazania na górze, nad którym się dziś zatrzymamy, brzmi:

„Błogosławieni, którzy łakną i pragną sprawiedliwości, albowiem oni będą nasyceni” (Mt 5:6). Słowem, które oddaje sens biblijnej sprawiedliwości jest świętość. Bóg mówi: „sprawiedliwy z wiary żyć będzie” (Hbr 10:38), „bez wiary zaś nie można podobać się Bogu” (Hbr 11:6).

Papież Franciszek pisze odnośnie tego błogosławieństwa:

Głód i pragnienie to doświadczenia bardzo intensywne, ponieważ odnoszą się do podstawowych potrzeb i są związane z instynktem przetrwania. Są osoby, które bardzo pragną sprawiedliwości i dążą do niej, szukają jej z dużym zaangażowaniem (Gaudete et exsultate 77).

Łaknienie i pragnienie sprawiedliwości oznacza pragnienie świętości ponad wszystko, również ponad życie. Powinniśmy pragnąć świętości jako najbardziej podstawowej potrzeby do życia wiecznego z Bogiem w niebie. Błogosławieństwo to jest wypełnione przez pierwsze i trzecie przykazanie: „Ja jestem Pan, twój Bóg… Nie będziesz miał bogów cudzych przede mną,” oraz “Pamiętaj, abyś dzień święty święcił.” Ci, którzy stawiają Boga na pierwszym miejscu w tym życiu, wypełniając swoje codzienne obowiązki i oddając się modlitwie, będą nasyceni oglądając Boga w niebie.

Pierwsze przykazanie: „Ja jestem Pan, twój Bóg… Nie będziesz miał bogów cudzych przede mną,” mówi o tym, że Bóg „jest Bogiem zazdrosnym” (Wj 20:5, itp.), który patrzy na swój lud oraz na każdego człowieka z osobna jako na swoją oblubienicę. Dlatego też stawianie innych bogów przed Niego – przed Jezusa Chrystusa – jest zdradą, jest jak cudzołóstwo. Dlatego też Bóg często bałwochwalstwo nazywa nierządem (por. Ez 16, Oz, itd.). katechizm Kościoła Katolickiego naucza: “Adoracja Jedynego Boga wyzwala człowieka z zamknięcia się w sobie, z niewoli grzechu i bałwochwalstwa świata” (KKK 2097).

Łaknienie i pragnienie sprawiedliwości powinno poruszać nas do postawienia Boga na pierwszym miejscu w naszym życiu, ponieważ „Pan Bóg nasz, Pan jest jeden. Będziesz miłował Pana, Boga swego, całym swoim sercem, całą swoją duszą, całym swoim umysłem i całą swoją mocą” (Mk 12:29-30, za Pwt 6:4).

poner a Dios en primer lugar en nuestras vidas, ya que "el Señor nuestro Dios, el Señor es uno; y amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, y con toda tu alma, y con toda tu mente, y con toda tu fuerza" (Marcos 12:29-30, citando Deuteronomio 6:4).

Como Iglesia, novia de Cristo, es más fácil entender las palabras de nuestro Señor: "El que ama al padre o a la

madre más que a mí no es digno de mí; y el que ama a su hijo o hija más que a mí no es digno de mí" (Mateo 10:37). Debemos amar a nuestro padre y a nuestra madre, hermanos y hermanas, hijos e hijas... pero debemos amarlos en nuestro amor por Jesucristo, nuestro verdadero

amor. El tipo de amor que Dios quiere de nosotros es total, íntimo, de por vida, fiel y fecundo, más que cualquier matrimonio terrenal. Los esposos y las esposas deben amar a Cristo en su cónyuge: "Estad sujetos unos a otros por reverencia a Cristo. Esposas a vuestros

maridos, como al Señor... Esposos, amen a sus esposas, como Cristo amó a la Iglesia y se entregó por ella" (Efesios 5:21-25).

Myśląc o Kościele jako oblubienicy Chrystusa łatwiej nam będzie zrozumieć słowa, jakie Jezus do nas kieruje: „Kto kocha ojca lub matkę bardziej niż Mnie, nie jest Mnie godzien. I kto kocha syna lub córkę bardziej niż Mnie, nie jest Mnie godzien” (Mt 10:37). Oczywiście powinniśmy kochać nasze matki, ojców, siostry, braci, córki , synów… lecz powinniśmy ich kochać w naszej miłości do Jezusa Chrystusa, naszej prawdziwej miłości. Miłość, jakiej Bóg od nas oczekuje, jest miłością totalną, intymną, wierną, na całe życie – podobną do ziemskiej miłości pomiędzy mężem i żoną. Małżonkowie powinni kochać Jezusa w swoim współmałżonku: „Bądźcie sobie wzajemnie poddani w bojaźni Chrystusowej! Żony niechaj będą poddane swym mężom, jak Panu, […] Mężowie miłujcie żony, bo i Chrystus umiłował Kościół i wydał za niego samego siebie” (Ef 5:21-25).
