Rabbi Arturo Kalfus

EVERY CAN CouNTS Now more than ever.

Please bring a can of food for the chaveet whenever you visit Temple. our neighborhood food banks thank you for sharing your food with the hungry - because… now more than ever, EVERY CAN CouNTS!

We look forward to seeing you at our Purim service and celebration on March 11 and Purim carnival on March 12. A little bit about Purim –

Purim is celebrated with a public reading—usually in the syna-gogue—of the Book of Esther (Megillat Esther), which tells the story of the holiday. Under the rule of King Ahashverosh, Haman, the

king's prime minister, plots to exterminate all of the Jews of Persia. His plan is foiled by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, who ultimately save the Jews of Persia from destruction. The reading of the megil-lah typically is a rowdy affair, punctuated by booing and noise-making when Haman's name is read aloud.

Purim is an unusual holiday in many respects. First, Esther is the only biblical book in which God is not mentioned. Second, Purim, like Chanukah, tradition-ally is viewed as a minor festival, but elevated to a major holiday as a result of the Jewish historical expe-rience. Over the centuries, Haman became the embodi-ment of every anti-Semite in every land where Jews were oppressed. The significance of Purim lies not so much in how it began, but in what it has become: a thankful and joyous affirmation of Jewish survival against all odds.

From my heart to yours,

Security upgradesWe are pleased to announce the details of a new security upgrade at Temple. Our testing and implementation of this security program over the past weeks has proved very suc-cessful, and we are pleased with the positive feedback, especially from our Early Childhood Community parents.

Simply, here is what happens. During the day and generally for evening meetings and for religious school on Sun-days, the interior doors at the front entrance are locked and visitors are required to ring a video intercom. This intercom is linked to a monitor in the main office and wirelessly to other locations through-out the building. When you ring the intercom, staff will “check you out” and then open the interior doors. Having a wireless network means you can be let in when the main office is closed. When you exit, the doors open automatically.

We, like many synagogues, continuously evaluate security ques-tions, including the times of day our doors should be locked and how to continue to be welcoming in this age of increased security consciousness. This is an ongoing process for us. We are now planning further enhancements to security equipment in our build-ing using proceeds of a homeland security grant we recently were awarded: installing additional cameras, access controls and more. This next phase is scheduled to be funded and completed in 2017, and you can look forward to further updates about our security enhancements and procedures.

Remember – If you see something, say something.

Kelly Onickel, Cantorial Soloist

Everything is coming up music at Temple Emanu-El. Recently we hosted the “Café Europa” concert performed by the Michi-gan Association of Cantors for Jewish Senior Living in honor of those who survived the holocaust. It was an honor to be a part of and host this event! Since becoming your Cantorial Soloist four and a half years ago I have made it my mission to bring more music into Temple Emanu-El. In February I brought special guest musi-cian Mark Bloom in to lead a wonderful Jazz Shabbat. On February 10th we had our Latin Shabbat, welcoming back the Sam Harris band and the T’filot’s our Temple

Quartet. You may not know this but I specifically chose to hire students and recent graduates from our local Detroit University to promote and support our up and coming local talent. I believe it is very important to support the arts within our community. Coming up this year we have two more music Shabbatot a 50’s Rock ‘n’ Roll/Rockabilly Shabbat on March 31st of which I am particularly proud because all the music is arranged by yours truly, and our Beatles Shabbat on June 9th. It has been very gratifying to be a part of reinvigorating our Temple Emanu-El’s Music Committee. This committee

for the past two years has put together a Musicafe series that are hosted in congre-gant’s homes bringing back the “Salon Performance” style of the 19th century, and also a bi-annual “Temples Got Talent” talent show. Thanks to the artists performing gratis there is no cost for you to attend these events, but dona-tions are always welcome.

Our Adult Education Committee has ar-ranged a Spring Festival – Jews and the Arts - and they are partnering up with our Music Committee in hosting a Motown Review on April 30th at 11 AM. The Mu-sic Committee is sponsoring The V-Jetts Jazz Ensemble of Cass Tech High School to perform for this event, once again supporting young musicians in our commu-nity. We are blessed to have two amazing choirs, our Shiru Dor L’dor Youth Choir and our Shir Chadash Adult Choir. Each choir sings at one service each month and for all holiday and festival worship services. The members of the choirs also com-mit to giving back to the community. It is our belief that God gave us the ability to sing and perform so we must give back. This year we performed a Chanukah Concert for Jewish Senior Life at the Teitel Senior Living facility in Oak Park.

Music has always been an integral part of Temple Emanu-El. Just a few weeks ago we celebrated our 65th Anniversary in Music and Reflections. It was truly a won-derful evening! I love bringing music to your life. My hope is that you enjoy it as much as I do. Purim is March 11th I hope you will join us for a wonderful Purim Service and event!

A Jewish Understanding of “The Parting of the Ways” 9:30-11 am, eight Wednesday mornings, beginning March 8 This course will answer the question of how a 1st C Jewish leader, who lived Jewish, prayed Jewish, thought Jewish, ate Jewish, spoke Jewish and died Jewish; whose disciples were only Jewish; and

who preached only a Jewish message, only to Jews—could and would become the focal point of a religion that is not Judaism! Discussion will focus on writings of the early Church Fathers and Rabbinic literature into the 4th C.

April 23 (in class)

It’s an interesting thought in my mind that whilst I am consciously planning and writing this article for March, and will probably link it to Purim, we are still at the beginning of February and haven’t yet celebrated Tu Bishvat. There is a constant correlation between writ-ing my monthly articles and having to plan ahead as an Educator. Directing a school curriculum can only be achieved

successfully when we accede to the concept of future planning. So we are planning our Purim Carnval before we celebrate the New Agricultural Year and equally will be talking about Passover, before we have joyously celebrated Purim.

Although it is imperative that we have our long-term goals in place, they must not come at the cost of our present. Thinking about the future and working towards it are the basis of continued success yet it is all too easy to fall into the trap of not appreciating the moment we are in.

On Purim we are taught that everything is upside down and noth-ing is how it is supposed to be. The consequences of this in the Purim story shows us that Purim reinforces the concept of having our priorities straight and not allowing our daily lives to become topsy turvy.

So in order to keep our calendars straight, events in the Religious School will be happening in the following order.

Sunday February 12th Yachad Tu Bishvat

Friday, March 3rd - 6th & 7th grades co-lead Congregational Family Service at Emanu-El

Saturday, March 11th Yachad Family Service at Cong. Beth Shalom

Sunday March 12th Yachad Purim Carnival

The following students received Mensch cards over the past few weeks: Shoshana Loomer, Henry Petts, Eitan Loomer, Ben Find-ling, Brooke Beckerman, Gabe Stacey, Thalia Bills, Lindsey Katz, Leah Zacks, Kaytlyn McPherson, Jayden Zager, Andrew Bahash, Jenna Kanfer, Noah Findling, Robbie Schubiner, Alex Cook, Danielle Chimovitz, Gabe Sugarman, Sophie Feiler, Danielle Nodler, Ekitu Burde, Julia Sampson, Caden Teicher, Orlando Avila.

Wishing you all a wonderful Purim!

Does the winter get you down? Are you longing for sunshine and blue skies? No need to go to Florida when you can join the Temple Emanu-El garden group as they plant seeds for the up-coming gardening season. A perfect solution to the Winter Blues is to watch seeds become seedlings under our Temple grow-lights. March begins our planting season as all vegetables, herbs, and flowers in the Community Garden are begun by seed under lights in our Temple basement. The four planting dates will be on these Sundays: March 12, March 26, April 9, April 23 – times TBD

Enrollment is well underway for the 2017-2018 camp and school year. Once again, we welcome mitzvah students to work at our summer camp and have openings available. Volunteers must commit to a three week session of camp.

On Sunday, February 26th, many of our staff attended a program sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Metropoli-tan Detroit, “Grit, Perseverance and Frustration Tolerance: How ADHD and executive functioning Impacts Learning and Behavior, presented by Cindy Goldrich, Ed.M.ACAC.

The workshop provided specific strategies, tips and tools to help teachers, par-ents and mental health professionals help children with ADHD and Executive Functioning challenges develop their ability to maintain their focus, manage their frustration, maximize their learning and persevere to achieve their goals. As Cindy says, “Prepare the children so they can succeed in their own unique way. We each have the power, the responsibility and the opportunity to make a difference.”

The smell of hamantashen will soon be in the air. One of the children’s favor-ite Purim activities is our hamantashen bakery set up in Katzman Hall. Each child will make several hamantashen to include in their Shalach Manot basket, and to enjoy as a classroom snack. We could not have all of these wonderful activities without the help of our parents. Thank you one and all.

??HAVING A BAD DAY??

I frequently have parents ask me about children who are having tantrums and cannot effectively discipline them. Try these - - - no guarantees included.

Have both respect for your child and positive discipline in your disciplinary routines. Communicate with your child after she/he had a moment to calm down. Calmly review the behavior with your child and explain why it was wrong using age-appropriate words. Be consistent and firm, yet kind. If a child does not get attention for a behavior, he will often stop doing it. Give warn-ings, then follow through, even if it means leaving a restaurant. When all else fails, you can always add another day of pre-school.Daylight Savings begins at 2:00 A.M. on Sunday, March 12th. Turn your clocks AHEAD one hour.
