3Our Clergy

Our MissionOver the course of a year we have been engaged in an exciting journey resulting in the creation of our mission for the New Year—Seek, Engage, Transform. Through Temple Emanu-El, we enrich our spirit and we find our purpose. Through our community and family, we deepen our relationship with each other, with our tradition, and with God. Our world will be better because Temple Emanu-El is in it. Our world will be better because you are the center of our mission. Together, we create

the future that God wants us to build. Seek, Engage, Transform. We start with you, we reach out to each other, we change the world. You are at the heart of our Temple.

Engage more deeply with our Temple family This year we will launch small groups. A small group is an intentional gathering of people who meet regularly. Since God designed us for relationships, we believe it is through the connections made in small groups that we will grow spiritually, and engage in authentic relationships with others in our Temple family. People form groups around what matters in their lives. Men’s groups, women’s groups, tikkun olam groups, common interest groups and the group you seek to develop; all is possible when we are led by our passions. Life change happens best in environments of true and authentic community.

Telling our story Temple Emanu-El will be utilizing social media to share the incredible stories that make up the essence of who we are. "Like" our page on Facebook and follow us on Instagram @templeemanuelbhm to learn more about some of the people who make up our temple family, upcoming programming and connect with others. Have an interesting story to share? Email [email protected].

Our New Logo We have launched our new Temple logo to represent our mission (shown to the left). The new logo reflects the beautiful dome in our sanctuary. The circular design translates the spiritual journey of Seek, Engage, Transform, as a continual journey of spiritual discovery, building relationships, and transforming our world. The multi-colored elements demonstrate the dynamic energy of our synagogue. The Jewish star, at the center of the design, represents you — you are at the heart of our Temple. The star also symbolizes the Jewish values, traditions and faith that bring us together. What an exciting time for our Temple family! Bring your energy and commitment, your hopes and your dreams — share them with your Temple family, and change your world.

Seek. Engage. Transform.Rabbi Laila Haas

Feeling Gelty 2016 It is time to support the annual holiday gift program, Feeling Gelty. While most of us are blessed with comfortable lifestyles, here’s a chance for us to show that we care for others desperately struggling during this season of giving. Temple Emanu-El is pleased to partner again with First Teachers@ Home to help others during this season of giving. First Teachers@ Home is a highly effective, non-traditional non-profit organization that offers a parent-centered school readiness program that gives low-income parents the tools to prepare their 3-4 year old children for success in kindergarten and beyond. These families participate in a lively 16 week course — books and supplies are provided at no cost. Parents learn how to teach their kids academics as well as positive parenting skills. Only families who complete the course are eligible to receive Christmas gifts from Champions like you! What do you need to do?Contact Amy Strickland at [email protected] or (205) 451-2264 for ways to volunteer or to sign up to champion a family. You will receive an email with details and a wish list for a child/children or a family you will be sponsoring.Sign up now and you can begin shopping sooner and avoid the holiday rush. Celebrate the miracle of Chanukah by bringing joy and light to non-Jewish families struggling to make ends meet at Christmas. Deadline to drop off gifts at Temple is Friday December 9th. REMEMBER ALL ITEMS DONATED ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!

Welcome All Generations to Join Us in Writing Your Legacy Letters

Welcome to all generations: the young and the aging, parents and empty nesters, men and women, who are thinking of attending the seminar about writing your unique legacy to those you love and future generations.

Your first question is probably “What is your legacy letter?” It may not even be a letter. Imagine a great grandmother unable to attend her great grandson’s high school graduation, or her great granddaughter’s wedding. Writing a blessing of congratulations and love on a card is a legacy that will be treasured for a lifetime. A legacy letter may be one page long, expressing one idea – either hand-written or typed – that can be accomplished in fifteen minutes. Or a legacy document may be a collection of one page letters. Or it may be a lengthy document, including photos and other momentos…. At our Legacy Letter workshop, we’ll learn to write blessings and explore legacies received from generations past to actively participate as the link that binds the generations before and after us. We’ll examine who we are and what is dearest to us in our own lives. When we harvest our ancestors’ values and can articulate our own, we can pass forward what really matters to the next generations. But perhaps most significant is this

seminar is an introduction for exploring, reflecting, and writing about our lives to celebrate life itself, and to pass forward our appreciation and awe to the generations who will follow us.

We hope you will join us on November 3 – see front cover for details.
