Sophomores Raegan Thompson and John Cody Petitfils shared a conversation in Latin class one day that took them to I John 4:4, “Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.” They discovered that they shared a passion to see students at HPCA put God and others ahead of themselves. As John Cody described it, “I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. Satan wants us to feel like we are the only one --- and that can make us timid. If we act poorly around people who aren’t sure about their faith, they think we feel like we’re better than them. Our age can’t be a reason; we have to mature in our faith, do what’s right.” Raegan agreed with John Cody and had herself been praying about what to do. “Even though we are young, there are younger ones looking up to us. I have four younger siblings --- we have great influence. We started asking ourselves what it means to be great. What does God say about being great?” John Cody and Raegan learned that according to the Urban Dictionary, “greatness” had to do with “status.” That was a disappointing find for them, since they believed our culture has it wrong and students are quick to get caught up in this fallacy. Through their discussions and prayer, John Cody and Raegan decided to start an early morning Bible study (1st and 3rd Thursdays, 7:30-7:55 am) for all high school students and faculty. Their desire is to understand the greatness of God and how to be “great” in the kingdom, knowing that Jesus taught that greatness comes through serving. Over 30 students came to that first Bible study to learn more about being great in the kingdom! Who knew their efforts would lead to designing and printing t-shirts, running off flyers to advertise, setting up Remind app notifications, and getting up extra early on those Thursdays to pick up students, buy snacks, and get to the high school media center? As students in Latin II and III, John Cody and Raegan are accustomed to working hard to meet their goals. He plays soccer and she is a swimmer and softball player. Still, talking about this Bible study excites them the most.

“We want students to know that greatness is obedience to Him, trust in Him, faith in Him. Rather than being afraid of what other people will say, we want to be concerned with ‘how God views me.’” For John Cody, that first Bible study convinced him they had done the right thing. “Hearing everyone pray with their small group, being reminded of how great God is, seeing all that He is doing, it is amazing.”

Science National Honor Society

Junior Austin Hendley brought his skills as a blacksmith to the HPCA National Science Honor Society meeting. Each chapter of Science National Honor Society is required to select and work on at least one project per school year. The purpose of the selected projects shall be to pursue the national objectives of the Science NHS. Each year, our chapter participates in Operation Clean Sweep in the spring, and provides science tutoring in the high school. Our Chapter also invites speakers from the scientific community to our monthly meetings to learn more about various science topics and potential careers.
